Berber Camp Merzouga - Meet the Sahara and its People!
Do you think you could survive the Saharan desert on your own? The environment here is much harsher than other parts of the world: The African sun beats down mercilessly, with temperatures ranging from 0 ºC (32 ºF) to 47 °C (117 °F). Navigating sand dunes can be disorienting and energy-intensive, as some can reach heights up to 150 meters (492 feet) tall. The Sahara is the largest hot desert on the planet, spanning 9.2 million km², with oases few and far between.
There is however, a group of indigenous people from North Africa, who have tamed this land for centuries, living amongst the sand and hot sun, known as the Berbers. The Berber people have not only endured the Sahara, they’ve thrived there for over 10,000 years, survived multiple invasions, while managing to protect their language and culture - pretty impressive huh? We knew very little about these people initially but thanks to Berber Camp Merzouga, and their Morocco Private Tour itinerary, we had the privilege of exploring the Saharan Desert for three days, where we got to experience native Berber camps and villages, plumb the depths of their rich culture, and gain an understanding of who these people are and where they’ve come from.

Best way to Experience the Sahara Desert | Camping in Merzouga, Morocco
The final Morocco vlog is here! Camping in the Sahara Desert at a spot called Merzouga.
Here we rode camels to our remote campsite, spent the night eating Moroccan food and listening to music played by the locals.
In the morning we made our way back to our new campsite by camel ride before jumping into some Jeeps to go on Safari.
To end it all a big long 13 hour bus ride to Marrakesh so we can finally show you what staying in a Riad is like.
Next stop: Flying home to surprise Jess's brother for Christmas!

We stayed in a Berber tent! | Day 2 Morocco Desert Tour
Final video of Day 2 of our Moroccan Desert Tour. We got lucky and the rain stopped so we were able to go outside of our tents to explore and have some fun (as you will see lol). We had a really nice traditional Moroccan dinner in the tents then had a nice relaxing campfire with traditional Moroccan drumming music being played by our hosts. Since weather was still poor we unfortunately didn't a nice starry night but at least we had some good sleep in the Berber tents!

Experience driving in big sky and dry, desert Berber country in Morocco as we leave the Dades Valley for a 200+ km drive to Merzouga. We’ll travel on Route N10 through Tinghir and then N113 a more isolated but smooth road. We’ll pass Alnif and see a mass of students on bicycles. Due to rain, rivers raged and some parts of roads going over rivers became either impassable or under water. In our little car, we experience a swimming car. We almost reach Merzouga until the road is closed to cars. Finding an SUV to take us over, the SUV has to travel on a water-covered road for 3-4 KM and this in a desert. Amazing.You will probably never see Merzouga like this in years.

Merzouga Desert Trip continues. This is my 4th day in Morocco and today we are exploring Gorges Dades, a beautiful canyon, local Berber places and villages, and also given a Berber (nomad groups of Morocco) carpet presentation. A very nice day which ends finally reaching Sahara....followed by camel riding....which is going to be presented in the next video! Stay tuned! :)

Taking a Camel Ride in the Moroccan Erg Chebbi Desert
Taking a Camel Ride in the Moroccan Erg Chebbi Desert was my long term dream and it came true in September 2017 when I went on a camel tour of the sandy dunes with some berber guides.
I was staying in Hassi Labied in the South of Morocco, a very small town near the Erg Chebbi sand dunes.
You will find Riad Aicha, probably the best bed and breakfast in Morocco in Hassi Labied, where I spent two nights during my Moroccan Road Trip from Fes to Merzouga.
Most people stay in Merzouga just next door, but the two places basically offer the same things and Hassi Labied is much more tranquil.
Both are next to the dunes and are well connected to nearby Erfoud. The difference is that Hassi Labied is far quieter and people don't pester tourists.
It was on my fifth day in Morocco that I arrived in Hassi Labied and by then I was so tired of people trying to sell me things that I didn't want to speak to anyone.
