Visit Madagascar: Berenty Private Reserve Spiny Forest
There's more than just lemurs in Madagascar. This 4th largest island in the world is filled with other flora and fauna that have evolved and can be seen only here.
Take an easy walk through the stunning Spiny Forest with an amazing variety of exceptional trees and plants, such as Baobabs and Octopus Trees. That's right...Octopus trees.
Fact: There is nothing poisonous in Madagascar. Not a poisonous insect or snake anywhere on the island. Amazing!

Visit Madagascar: Don't Miss Berenty Private Reserve
Although we were lucky enough to miss the bone-jarring ride to Berenty by flying private, put it on your do not miss Madagascar list and prepare to take hundreds of lemur pictures. It's worth every pothole.

Visit Madagascar: An Exciting Private Plane to Berenty Reserve
Air Madagascar cancelled flights to Fort Dauphin two days in a row. So...fabulous Wilderness Travel (our tour operator) arranged for a private Cessna Citation I to fly us directly to Berenty Private Reserve, bypassing the horrendous drive from Fort Dauphin to Berenty.
Wouldn't it be nice to be rich enough to fly private all the time? What a treat and thanks again, Wilderness Travel for a lifetime experience...

Visit Madagascar: The Adorable Berenty Lemurs and Wildlife
Berenty is a private reserve located in a section of gallery forest bordering river. The reserve is world famous for its tame lemurs -- especially the ring-tailed lemur and Verreaux’s sifaka (watch them hip-hop dance across the road in tomorrow's video).
The trails are flat. There is friendly and abundant wildlife, and Western standard facilities,

Road to Berenty
This is example how bad the roads are in Madagascar. Berenty is a private reserve where you can see Lemurs and Sifakas.
Lemurs of Berenty
The Berenty Private Reserve in southern Madagascar is a good place to go to see lemurs. There are about 6 species within the reserve, three diurnal ones (which are large and easy to see) and three nocturnal ones (smaller and much harder to spot).
Most of this video was shot in April of 2000. The infanticide was shot by John Walker at an earlier date.
Many thanks to Alison Jolly and the d'Heaulme family.
Visit Madagascar: Drive From Berenty-Fort Dauphin
Marine Steve and I lucked out traveling to Berenty from Antananarivo by private plane, but had to suck up the four-hour very rough drive to Fort Dauphin for a return flight to Antananarivo.
It's through the spiny desert on what passes for a road, over the mountains, and past tiny villages. Fort Dauphin (pop: 12,000) is located in southeast Madagascar and has a good tourist infrastructure.

Miss réservée!! Lyrics
Nuance !!! mon cœur a dit stop

Visit Madagascar: Unique Hip-Hop Sifakas Dance Across The Road
Berenty is a private reserve located in a section of gallery forest bordering river. The reserve is world famous for its Verreaux’s sifaka lemur; generally white with brown on the sides, top of head, and on arms. Unlike the other lemurs, the only way it can locomotive on the ground is by literally hopping sideways across the road.
Our Madagascar luck continued as two troops skirmished over territory hopping back and forth across the road. And it is luck! A person can sit for hours and not see what we saw...

This has to be Madagascar's most underrated spots - a hidden paradise! Isalo National Park is known for its sandstone formations, deep canyons, palm-lined oases, and grasslands. There are so many hidden spots and canyons to cool off and swim in the crystal blue waters. An oasis in the middle of no where! Yummy La Varangue Antananarivo, Madagascar
Excellent La Varangue Restaurant is located one short block from Hotel Colbert. Use extreme caution walking anywhere in Tana at night. No jewelry, passport, camera, money, nada. A Hotel Colbert security guard will walk you there and La Varangue will walk you back.
The food and service is excellent and I pate'd de foie gras myself to death in Madagascar. Isn't that amazing? Who would have thunk it.

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park is a 155 square kilometre protected area consisting principally of primary growth forest in Alaotra-Mangoro Region in eastern Madagascar. The park's elevation ranges from 900-1250 meters, with a humid climate. Average annual precipitation is 1700 mm, with rainfall on 210 days of each year. This rainforest is habitat to a vast species biodiversity, including many endemic rare species and endangered species, including 11 lemur species. The park's two component parts are Mantadia National Park and Analamazoatra Reserve, which is best known for its population of Madagascar's largest lemur, the Indri.
This is one of the easiest parks in Madagascar to visit from the capital city, Antananarivo, with a 3-hour drive east on a paved road, Route Nacional 2 (RN 2). While Analamazaotra and park headquarters are short walks from Antsapanana on the RN 2, special transport must be arranged or hired from local hotels to reach Mantadia. Hikes ranging from 1-6 hours are typically available in both parts of the park. A local guide is required for visitors entering either part of the park.
The main threat to this park comes from the disappearance of adjoining habitat outside the park. This disappearance has been caused primarily by logging and replacement of rainforest with commercial Australian eucalyptus and Chinese pine forests, and to a lesser extent by slash-and-burn cultivation for rice agriculture, which is exacerbated by the extremely high population growth rate and poverty in rural Madagascar.
To address the disappearing habitat threat, reserves have been created in the vicinity of Andasibe-Mantadia that balance resource extraction with environmental protection, and attempt to create economic and environmentally preferable alternatives to replacing native forests with eucalyptus and pine.
