6 MUST-TRY Norwegian Foods in Bergen, Norway | Norway Travel Guide (Ep 3)
Bergen, Norway - After the crazy Trolltunga Hike, Steve and I packed up our Vrbo near Odda and continued our Norwegian road trip to Bergen.
Steve went off to find the best things to do in Bergen while I walked around the city in search of great Norwegian foods based on local recommendations.
From salmon sashimi at the fish market and reindeer sausage from a street stall, to the famous Norwegian brown cheese and traditional Norwegian dishes such as Lapskaus and meat balls.
It was a great day of eating in Bergen, Norway!

Matt and Marilyn explore the second largest city in Norway: Bergen! Although it is not as well-known as Oslo, it still offers incredible sights, scenery, and even tons of delectable foods. Bergen may be an expensive city for budget travelers, but we will show you way to eat, drink, and sleep in Bergen for cheap! Find out the MANY things to do in Bergen, Norway. In the video, we:
--Explain why we went to Bergen and not another more well-known place, like Oslo
--Go to Lille Lungegårdsvannet-- the first view we saw in Bergen and how it made us fall in love with Bergen right away
--Walk around Bergen, which can be brutal with all of the hills, plus the frigid cold in winter, but rewarding with its views!
--Explain what the Bergen Card is and why it's vital for seeing the sights in Bergen
--Go on the fjord cruise, get a discount, and why it was one of the best things we've ever done! Yes-- ever!
--Eat some must-try foods in Bergen, like fish cakes, fish soup, and reindeer sausage, and where to get them
--Find out how expensive Bergen, Norway really is (yup, it's nightmare-ishly expensive)
--Go to the Bryggen (traditional and adorable homes on the water)
--Ride a funicular up Mount Fløyen and admiring panoramic views of the city
--Explain why traveling around the city on a Sunday is brutal, especially when you have a full bladder and need a bus to get to civilization and toilets!
--Venture to Gamlehaugen castle and why we think it would be much better viewed in summer than in winter
--Find the most picturesque traditional homes in Bergen
--Use public transportation and how easy it is
--Wander around the aquarium and why the walk there from the center was one of our favorite strolls of all time

Bergen Fish Market & Fisketorget Tour (4K)
If you are a seafood lover, the open air Bergen Fish market and the indoor Fisketorget are must visits if you visit the city. See a WEALTH of yummy Norwegian king crab, shrimp, scallops, lobsters, salmon and even whale being grilled and sold by various vendors at the markets. You will also get an idea of the costs in NOK (Norwegian Krone). For a close-up of what a tasty seafood platter looks like check out this video:
Bergen, Norway travel guide
The plan for Bergen, Norway: walking tour of town center and the outdoor food market on the harbor; visit to the historic Brygen; and ride up the mountain by funicular to get a great view over the city.
Please subscribe:
Our walking tour will have a look at downtown and some of the quiet residential neighborhoods.
A short walk to the edge of town brings you to the funicular which takes you up the Floyen Mountain for a marvelous view across the city from a 1000-foot high observation perch. The ride just takes eight minutes, making this an easy excursion. At the top you get a spectacular view of the town of Bergen and the harbor, making a nice way to start the day. We then explore the town, old and new.
One of the fun activities is a visit to the colorful open-air food market at the harbor, especially busy in the summertime, rich with fresh produce, fish and meat. They have fruits and sandwiches to go as well so you can pick up a relatively inexpensive lunch, or just get a light bite while browsing around.
The most impressive historic site in Bergen is the large collection of wooden buildings known as the Brygen, constructed about 300 years ago. These wooden buildings are so important they are on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites. The Brygen was the main residences, offices, shops and warehouses of this thriving town, which was one of the important cities of the Hanseatic League, the major trading network of Northern Europe.
In the hillside behind the Brygen you can wander through a residential neighborhood that developed hundreds of years ago before there were any automobiles, so as as a result you have narrow, quiet lanes that are for pedestrians, making a peaceful place to stroll. Bergen is worth exploring just to browse around the old streets and alleyways, which can be a most satisfying experience. The small wooden houses lying higgledy-piggledy, cobblestone step ways climb steeply and the passion for flowers is all around. You'll find he occasional shop in the middle of this residential district as well.

In 2015, Bergen became a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the area of gastronomy.
Bergen City of Gastronomy builds on a millennium of history as a meeting place and trading centre for cultural and culinary traditions. Surrounded by the sea, deep fjords and high mountains, nature has created a magnificent and pure environment for food production.

Winter in Bergen
Stroll through the charming alleyways, go skiing in the middle of the city and cruise the snow-capped fjords: the Norwegian city of Bergen is a magical winter wonderland.
Things to do in Bergen, Norway
No matter what season you choose for your visit to Bergen, you will always find things to that create lifelong memories. Bergen is surrounded by one of the most popular attractions in the world, the Norwegian fjords, which have been inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and voted the world’s most unspoiled tourist destination by National Geographic.
Bergen is a great starting point for fjord tours and day trips. Norway in a Nutshell® is Norway’s most famous fjord tour - a one-day trip from Bergen, taking you through the most spectacular fjord landscapes. The Fjord Cruise Bergen - Mostraumen has daily departures from Zachariasbryggen next to the Fish Market, giving you a spectacular view of the narrow Mostraumen – surrounded by steep mountains and waterfalls.
Take a trip up to Mt. Fløyen or Mt. Ulrikenand enjoy the view of the city, the fjord and the ocean. With the Ulriken cable car or Fløibanen funicular you can get to the top of the mountains within a few minutes.
There are plenty of things to do on top of the mountains, like guided hiking tours, bike rental, zipline and other activities. Bergen also offers several different guided tours on foot, by bus, with sightseeing train, seaplane or segway. A perfect way to get an overview of things to do in Bergen.
More info and booking of activities:
Bergen - World class seafood
There is an abundance of delicacies out in the open sea beyond the west coast city of Bergen. The seafood is world-class, and this has long enabled chefs in Bergen to dream up the best fish and seafood recipes.
Bergen can offer seafood and sushi in all price brackets and to all tastes. Most of the seafood restaurants are in central Bergen, but if you feel like a short trip out of town, a visit to Cornelius seafood restaurant is sure to whet your appetite. Or maybe you just want to go for fish and chips at the world-famous Fisketorget?

Bergen, Norway Top 5 attractions - Norway trip report-2
Our trip continues from Oslo to Bergen. A beautiful city, Bergen has so much to offer for tourists. Here I have complied the top 6 Bergen's attractions from our 2 days at Bergen. So many things to see in and around Bergen - warmest Norwegian country. Bergen is called as “gateway to the fjords”, so don’t miss visiting the fjords.
It was such a great experience to visit Norway for 10 days in July snow, wildlife,(which is considered as summer in that part of the world, which could be quite cold for other parts of the world) and explore the best of each of Norway, an amazing but a very expensive country. We went to Oslo, Bergen and from Bergen we did a 5 day road trip into total wilderness of Norway including fjords, mountains, lakes etc. Each destination was very unique and for photographers and nature lovers, this is the place to be in Summer. Thank you for the memories, Norway! I'll be back someday to explore you more.
