Winter in Bergen
Stroll through the charming alleyways, go skiing in the middle of the city and cruise the snow-capped fjords: the Norwegian city of Bergen is a magical winter wonderland.
Sledding Down Mount Fløyen in Bergen, Norway
In this vlog we sled down a mountain on a sled or a so called snow racer.
The mountain we were sledding down was Mount Fløyen, which is one of the seven big mountains surrounding Bergen in Norway.
We actually vlogged on this mountain in the fall:
First we got a sled which we bought at our local shopping mall. The staff was nice enough to let us assemble the sled inside the store. It was just like putting together IKEA furniture. Can you imagine how stupid we looked?
After arriving in the city centre, we rode the funicular up Mt. Floyen. There was so many people with ski and sleds that we had to stand in a line for 30 minutes (which is a lot for being Norway).
The view from the top was as beautiful as ever, and as we got our camera ready we ate some delicious cinnamon roll (classic Bergen sweets).
Riding the snow racer, we sled down the mountain, crashed, filmed and had the most amazing time. We really felt like children again.
In winter, those few times there are snow in Bergen, people go up Mount fløyen to ski, sledge, run, jog or just take a stroll. even though it's common sledding down this mountain, neither of us had done it before. It was especially Potato's childhood dream, and finally she could sled down with pride ;-)
This activity is one of the best things to do in Bergen and Norway for holidays or travels in winter season. The scenery from this mountain is gorgeous, and the activity is way too fun.
Hope you enjoyed watching us, an AMWF / Interracial couple, sliding down a snowy mountain in the cold winter in Bergen, Norway.

Over the Lowthers in Winter
A short video of some highlights (sort of) of a walk over the Lowthers, starting and finishing in Leadhills; a walk of 7.2 miles (11.5 km).
The route was out of Leadhills to Glengonnar Halt, then up the Radar Station road, which was followed over Lowther Hill, where the Golf Ball resides, across the saddle-back of Short Lowther and over Green Trough, where a smaller station is situated, to its end at the summit of Green Lowther, the location of the radio masts. From there, a direct route was taken to the Leadhills reservoir and onwards, past the golf-course, to emerge back in Leadhills by the Hopetoun Arms Hotel.
The aim was to be up top by the time the snow hit, so not much footage on the ascent - time was short. Each of the stations get a bit of footage. At the first, by Throw Rig (A gamekeeper quad bike was spotted from here, going down the hill - smart move), snow was very modest fine stuff, which became more intense at the summit of Lowther Hill. Conditions worsened crossing the saddle-back, with a respectable (25 to 30mph) blizzard developing on reaching Green Lowther. Visibility was poor up top and so I was dependent on sense of direction for the descent, but pleased to say, I was only 50 metres south of where I intended to reach the reservoir (passed left of Rising Cleuch instead of right which turned out to be easier) after a descent of 282 metres (925ft) over a distance of just under a mile.
It's worth noting that I know these hills reasonably well and this route especially. I would not attempt a walk such as this in such conditions without foreknowledge of weather and likely conditions, proper warm and waterproof clothing, sticks, food, fluids, mobile phone, compass (and sat-nav if available) and a pre-defined route with ETA notified to my better half back home (would have included small shelter tent and flares too, if it were much longer a walk). It's also worth noting that the conditions experienced were tame when compared with what the Lowthers can really throw at you in a proper Scottish winter - like 70+ mph blizzard with complete white-out. Such walks can be treacherous for the unwary on a good day; if you want to play, get the kit (and watch out for bits blowing off the radar stations). Have to concede that a lone trek was probably ill-advised, but I'm getting old and cranky - it does me good and it won't get me arrested.
Anyway, a few cool things cropped up which is why I'm sharing this. Wind driven snow does pretty things and the lack of view at 2401 feet (asl) in snow, is almost a breath-taking as that seen on a clear day. The degeneration of the stations is quite eerie as well. The cinematography is not thrilling and there'll be no Oscars for technique or anything else here - it's doodling with a camcorder; the weather and the walk necessitated a pocket camcorder (the only one I have anyway) and effort to keep it from getting soaked, but it has its moments if only for the curious.
Enjoy.

Oslo Travel Guide: Things to do in Oslo as a Tourist
Top Sightseeing locations to visit in Oslo, Norway. Including Downtown Oslo, The Royal Castle, museums, Vigelandsparken, Holmenkollen, and more.
The exact locations are listed at the end of the description.
The Oslo Opera:
Do this one! The opera building is adjacent to the central station, and it's awesome. It's architecture is like walking on an iceberg, and it overlooks the Oslo fjord and Akershus Castle. Doesn't take much time.
Karl Johans gate:
The main walking street that connects Central Station (Oslo S) with the Royal Castle. I guess it's a must when you come to Oslo. You can't avoid it, and you shouldn't! Because it's the main street of Oslo. But Karl Johan is mostly for the tourists, beggars, scammers. People that live in Oslo, like me, hardly ever go there.
Royal Castle:
It's quite small compared to other royal castles because Norway was a poor country when it was built. But it's still a nice place to walk through on your way to Bogstadveien or to spend half an hour.
Akershus Castle:
This is a nice medieval castle at the center of Oslo, overlooking the Oslo fjord, and Aker brygge. Very nice for sunsets, and after a day in Oslo sentrum or Aker Brygge. There is also a free military museum and a cheap WWII resistance museum here.
Aker Brygge:
These are the Oslo docks which have been redeveloped into a posh private restaurant/bar/shopping area. Nice for a walk, and plenty of places to sit down and watch people or the magnificent view of Akershus Castle. There's also a modern art museum here if that's your thing. If you do go to the modern art museum, be sure go all the way to the top terrace, where you find an even better view of Aker Brygge, the fjord and Akershus Castle.
Museum Island/Peninsula (Bygdøy):
This is where most of the museums are, including the Viking Ship Museum, Kon Tiki, Maritime Museum, Folk Museum. But be aware that it takes a day, and it's quite a detour, there's not much else to do there. If I had to pick one, I would do the Viking Ship museum and maybe the adjacent Folk Museum.
Vigelandsparken/Frognerparken:
This sculpture park is very good, and very large. During summer this is a continuous party/BBQ, but in wintertime you will find mostly joggers and dog walkers. Do this park if naked stone people are your thing. Pro tip: The Oslo City museum is in the park, and its FREE!
Holmenkollen/Frognerseteren:
Holmenkollen is a giant ski-jump on a mountain overlooking Oslo. There is also the ski-museum and ski-stuff around here. Metro line 1 runs all the way to Frognerseteren and there is a cafe/restaurant close to the wilderness where you can overlook Oslo.
Ekebergåsen:
This is a lookout point close to Oslo, overlooking the city. If you are thinking of going to Frognerseteren for the view only, you should go here instead. Much closer to the city, so you get a better view and travel time is less, this is a nice spot to watch the sunset.
Some Pro Tips:
If you want to see the fjord for cheap, go to the beginning of Aker Brygge, and take the ferry (B10) to Nesodden and back again (don't get of). You will have a great view of Akershus Castle, Aker Brygge, numerous islands and the fjord.
The RuterReise app for live public transportation time tables or planning, or just use Google maps, there's another RuterBillett app for purchasing tickets with a credit card on your phone, but I think it's only in Norwegian. Then there is the website for trip planning.
Uber app, works quite well, and is half price of normal taxi
