Madama Butterfly - The letter
Puccini is often considered to be the master of feelings. His music evokes the deepest of reactions in the audience, which is beautifully illustrated in this section from Madama Butterfly: Sharpless visits to tell Cio-Cio San that Pinkerton is not coming back, but he struggles to say so directly and asks instead what she would do if he was not to return. The question strikes like lightning in Cio-Cio San, who has waited faithfully for the return of her beloved for over three years. The unthinkable is suddenly presented, and she reacts spontaneously. First she falls quiet, then follows confusion, disbelief and rejection. And finally pain and fear of death. As the feelings run through her Puccini describes it all in music, bit by bit.
