Netherlands Overijssel Deventer (Sint-Nicolaas) Bergkerk Nederland Romaanse kruisbasiliek
The Berg church was built between 1198-1209, near the former harbor Deventer. She was in the heyday of the Hanseatic city founded by Norbertine from the Westphalian Varlar (near Coesfeld). The church, a Romanesque basilica was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. The building is very similar to churches in the Baltic States. It was consecrated by the Bishop of Livonia. In the 15th century, the Bergkerk several renovations making it a late Gothic character. Then the two characteristic steeples built in that period (the lower part of the towers is still original). In 1580 the church went into the hands of the Protestants, when the building was from the Dutch Reformed Church. The interior was, as usual, immediately stripped of the Catholic characteristics. The wall and vault paintings disappeared under a layer of whitewash.

'The great thing about Dick Raaijmakers is that he always retained his pioneering spirit and did not seem to know any bounds. Music, visual arts, theatre, poetry -- he incorporated them all into one all-encompassing art form. He was a master of all arts, yet he never lost his own uniquely individual touch. Raaijmakers' work possesses a certain sprezzatura. He is the rare artist who influences even laymen.'

Hij verwierf bekendheid met The Pickwick Papers (The posthumous papers of the Pickwick Club) dat vanaf 1836 maandelijks verscheen.
