Democratic Presidential Debate
Last night, Democratic candidates vying for the 2020 presidential nomination faced off once again for a nationally televised debate. Only 10 of the candidates this time qualified for a prime-time opportunity to make their case, with front-runner Joe Biden sharing the debate stage for the first time with Elizabeth Warren, who has enjoyed a steady rise in the polls since the first debate held in June. Then, California Sen. Kamala Harris memorably attacked Joe Biden for his decades-old opposition to school busing. But this time it was his fellow former Obama Cabinet member, Julian Castro, who made the most personally direct attacks against 76-year-old Biden, including a suggestion that his memory is suffering because of his age.

From Gig Workers to Rent Control, Legislative Highlights as Session Ends
This week, lawmakers in Sacramento passed AB 5, a bill that is sending shock waves through the tech industry, especially ride-hailing services Uber and Lyft that dominate the so-called gig economy. The bill could affect roughly a million gig workers in the state by reclassifying them as employees rather than independent contractors, and entitling them to benefits such as health insurance and a pension. Uber and Lyft, along with the meal delivery service DoorDash, have vowed to spend $90 million to place a ballot measure before voters next year to fight it. Also this week, lawmakers passed for the first time a statewide rent control bill to help millions of tenants, as California grapples with a housing crisis and a surge in homelessness.

On Thursday night, the Berkeley Repertory Theatre will kick off its 51st season with the American premiere of “The Great Wave,” a story of separation and struggle between two sisters that plays out across North Korea and Japan.This season’s lineup of shows will also be helmed by a new artistic director, Johanna Pfaelzer, a New York theater veteran who helped bring to the stage Tony Award-winning productions such as “Hamilton” and “American Idiot.”

Marvin X says was not Malcolm X a pimp who transcended his pimp life? Fillmore says he will soon release a gospel album. We know one things about pimps, they are for real, not phony, fake ass, pseudo conscious negroes. FYI, I converted the biggest pimp in my hometown of Fresno, CA: Marcel (PBUH). After seeing my production of Amiri Baraka's Dutchman at Fresno State, circa 1967(I was Clay and my partner Ethna X. Wyatt/Hurriyah was Lula; and after loaning me one of his white ho's wig), Marcel came to the production and when he said Clay stabbed to death by Lula, threw in his pimping towel and joined the Nation of Islam. He said after seeing the white woman stab Clay, he thought about what would happen to him if one of his white ho's stabbed him in his motel room. If he called black people, would they give a fuck? If he called the police would they come or tell the ho to push the knife in further? Marcel eventually made his haj to Mecca and became an Imam in the California Department of Corrections. Allah is the Greatest!

I AM THEATRE: Luis Valdez
Luis Valdez is regarded as one of the most important and influential American playwrights living today. His internationally renowned and Obie award winning theater company, El Teatro Campesino (The Farm Workers' Theater) was founded in 1965 -- in the heat of the United Farm Workers (UFW) struggle and the Great Delano Grape Strike in California's Central Valley. His involvement with Cesar Chavez, the UFW and the early Chicano Movement left an indelible mark that remained embodied in all his work even after he left the UFW in 1967: his early actos LAS DOS CARAS DEL PATRONCITO and QUINTA TEMPORADA, (short plays written to encourage campesinos to leave the fields and join the UFW), his mitos (mythic plays) BERNABE and LA CARPA DE LOS RASQUACHIS that gave Chicanos their own contemporary mythology, his examinations of Chicano urban life IN I DON'T HAVE TO SHOW YOU NO STINKIN' BADGES, his Chicano re-visioning of classic Mexican folktales CORRIDOS, his exploration of his Indigenous Yaqui roots in MUMMIFIED DEER, and -- of course -- the play that re-exams the Sleepy Lagoon Trial of 1942 and the Zoot Suit Riots of 1943, two of the darkest moments in LA urban history -- ZOOT SUIT -- considered a masterpiece of the American Theater as well as the first Chicano play on Broadway and the first Chicano major feature film. Luis numerous feature film and television credits include, among others, the box office hit film La Bamba starring Lou Diamonds Phillips, Cisco Kid starring Jimmy Smits and Cheech Marin and Corridos: Tales of Passion and Revolution starring Linda Ronstadt. Luis has never strayed far from his own farm worker roots. His company, El Teatro Campesino, is located 60 miles south of San Jose in the rural community of San Juan Bautista, CA. This theater, tucked away in San Benito County, is the most important and longest running Chicano Theater in the United States. Luis' hard work and long creative career have won him countless awards including numerous LA Drama Critic Awards, Dramalogue Awards, Bay Area Critics Awards, the prestigious George Peabody Award for excellence in television, the Presidential Medal of the Arts, the Governor's Award for the California Arts Council, and Mexico's prestigious Aguila Azteca Award given to individuals whose work promotes cultural excellence and exchange between US and Mexico. Luis has written numerous plays, authored numerous articles and books. His latest anthology Mummified Deer and Other Plays was recently published by Arte Publico Press. As an educator, he has taught at the University of California, Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, Fresno State University and was one of the founding professors of CSU Monterey Bay. He is the recipient of honorary doctorates from, among others, the University of Rhode Island, the University of South Florida, Cal Arts, the University of Santa Clara, and his alma mater, San Jose State University. Luis was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Theatre at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. In 2007 he was awarded a Rockefeller fellowship as one of fifty US srtists so honored across the United States.

The 2018 College of Engineering Homecoming panel discussion - 150 Years of Innovation - was held on Saturday, October 13. For 150 years, UC Berkeley engineers have reimagined the world, invented the future and reshaped the possible. Berkeley Engineering Dean Tsu-Jae King Liu and fellow engineering faculty leaders from across the college discussed continuing Berkeley’s tradition of excellence in service to society and what the next 150 years might bring.
Presenters included:
Tsu-Jae King Liu: dean and professor electrical engineering and computer sciences. Tsu-Jae King Liu is internationally recognized in academia and industry for her innovations in semiconductor devices and technology, and is highly regarded for her achievements as an instructor, mentor and administrator. She began her tenure as dean on July 1, 2018.
Alex Bayen: Liao-Cho Innovation Endowed Chair; director of the Institute of Transportation Studies; professor, civil and environmental engineering and electrical engineering and computer sciences. Alex Bayen’s field of expertise is mobile sensing and optimization. A pioneer in using commuters’ mobile phones to sense traffic flow, he is now working on smarter apps that will talk to one another in order to prevent clogged freeways and city streets.
Amy Herr: Lloyd Distinguished Professor, bioengineering; investigator, Chan Zuckerberg Biohub; faculty director, Bakar Fellows Program. Amy Herr, the co-inventor of scWestern technology and a recognized leader in microanalytical tool innovation, was part of the inaugural 2012–13 Bakar Fellows cohort. She created her start-up, Zephyrus Biosciences, to develop research tools enabling protein analysis at the single-cell level.
Kara Nelson: associate dean of equity and inclusion, College of Engineering; professor, civil and environmental engineering. Kara Nelson’s research program addresses innovative strategies to improve the sustainability of urban water infrastructure, including technologies for potable and non-potable water reuse, nutrient recovery, decentralized systems, intermittent water supply, household water treatment and affordable sanitation.
Ikhlaq Sidhu: faculty director and founder, Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship; Emerging Area Professor, industrial engineering and operations research. Ikhlaq Sidhu is a world-class expert in “real-life” technology innovation and leadership. Sidhu invented the technology used in Skype and other internet communications — he holds 75 patents — and developed the Data-X lab, course and framework for rapid implementation of digital transformation.

The Ground Floor Summer Residency Lab is Berkeley Rep’s cornerstone program for the creation and development of new work. We think of it as a research and development lab where the creative process is prioritized above all else. This is because often, artists are under pressure to quickly create a polished product. Rehearsal schedules can be punishing, and even developmental opportunities frequently come with restrictive formats that don’t work for every play.
The Summer Lab is built foremost with flexibility – our artists make their own schedules and are under no obligation to showcase their work. Our staff is on hand to respond to eclectic creative needs as they arise. (We’ve heard: “Can we stand in the middle of the street in a life-size camera costume? Do you know any good trumpet players? Is there a pool with a viewing window around?”) We pride ourselves on bending and swaying with ideas as they float around, often landing somewhere totally unexpected but really exciting.
We emphasize process over product. We provide resources for artists to respond to the modern and changing world, promote cross-pollination among artists and place high value on face-to-face contact. We celebrate language in its broadest terms and define it as more than just the spoken word: we will use our theatrical medium to explore language in all its forms.
