Judge allows Massachusetts museum to sell Rockwell art
PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- A Massachusetts museum can move forward with its plan to sell 40 works of art, including two by Norman Rockwell.
A judge Tuesday denied bids by the plaintiffs and the state attorney general to stop the sale by the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield.
A lawsuit that includes Rockwell's three sons as plaintiffs alleges the museum contracted with Sotheby's for a public auction of the works before it announced its plans publicly. A second lawsuit claims the museum breached its contract with members by exceeding the terms of its charter when it decided to remove the art.

Berkshire Museum - Stop the Art Sale 2017
There has never been anything like this protest against selling off the crown jewels of this museums collection to underwrite most of the cost of transforming the museum into what some have described as a glorified tax exempt Chuck E Cheese. They need to build an endowment and revisit the messaging on relevance. This is an outstanding museum. One of the most interesting in New England - at the heart of a region that is one of the most popular destinations in Massachusetts. Cashing out is not the way. Its made national news and as of today - Nov 3rd, there is still time to stop the auction at Sotheby's scheduled 10 days from now

Unique Museums: The Berkshire Museum | Connecting Point | Feb. 17, 2016
Founded over one hundred years ago, the Berkshire Museum is a museum of natural science, history, and fine art located in downtown Pittsfield. Not content with the status quo, the museum has recently embarked on programs for its patrons to learn in unique ways. Producer Tony Dunne and Videographer Mark Langevin took a tour to see how a museum can take its programming to the next level and provide opportunities for people to not only engage with an artifact or a piece of art, but unlock their minds through creative play and innovative thinking.
Save Art/Save the Museums Opposes Berkshire Museum Art Sale | Connecting Point | Apr. 17, 2018
The controversial sale of up to $55 million in artwork by the Berkshire Museum was approved earlier this month. Trustees had been pushing a plan to sell off parts of its collection–including paintings by Norman Rockwell–but legal challenges scuttled an auction planned for last November.
The planned art sale has been a hot button issue in the Berkshires and beyond. Supporters say the money generated by the Berkshire Museum art sale will help the museum secure its financial future and bring the 19th century museum into the 21st century. But, those opposed say selling artwork to support a museum's bottom line is a bad idea.
Save the Art/Save the Museum, a grassroots group, has called on the Berkshire Museum to pick a different course. Members Linda Cleary and Carol Diehl joined host Carrie Saldo in the studio to discuss their point of view.
