Churches, Old Jewish Ghetto and More in Vilnius, Lithuania
A person could go church crazy in Vilnius. St. Casimirs, St. Theresa, St. Anne, Bernardine Church, Church of Holy Mother of God, Church of St. Johns, Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit - and these are just the important ones.
We now headed into the old Jewish Ghetto that once had 11 synagogues on just one street!. Vilnius was more than 40% Jewish before World War II and there is a monument to the Japanese Consul, Chiune Sugihara who rescued Jews at this terrible time.
A short chow break for energy before continuing on...
Miracle of Faith: Lithuania's Churches
A majority of Americans couldn't find Lithuania on a world map, but one thing visitors to this country northeast of Poland can't fail to notice are its churches. Many date back centuries surviving two world wars and a fifty year long Soviet occupation in the process, and seem to be everywhere across the land in towns big and small.
Many are also beautiful, and here to illustrate is a sample in a variety of locations and architectural styles. Accompanying music courtesy of New Age artist Enya's A Day Without Rain. Enjoy the show!

The Gate of Dawn and St. Theresa's Church, Vilnius, Lithuania - 18th January, 2013
The Gate of Dawn is a city-gate of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. In the 16th century city gates often contained religious artifacts intended to guard the city from attacks and to bless travelers. The Chapel in the Gate of Dawn contains an icon of The Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of Mercy, said to have miraculous powers. For centuries the picture has been one of the symbols of the city and an object of veneration for both Roman Catholic and Orthodox inhabitants. Thousands of votive offerings adorn the walls and many pilgrims from neighboring countries come to pray in front of the beloved painting. Masses are held in Lithuanian and Polish languages.
This film features both external and internal views of the Gate of Dawn and St. Theresa's Church, to which the gate is connected. Externally both the North and South side of the gate are featured. Internally, the gold sculpted painting of the Virgin Mary is shown in detail.
At St. Theresa's Church, the focus of the film is upon the architecture and decor of the church including the ceiling, paintings, statues and sculptures.

Bernadine Cathedral and Monastery
The Bernadine Cathedral was originally built of wood in the 15th century, but later it was renovated with ornate stonework making it one of Lviv's most beautiful churches. The cathedral's facade is protected by statues of the sacred order of Bernardine; there are images of Mary, Jesus and apostles Peter and Andrew in the niches and the church is beautifully illuminated every evening. The cathedral is now a Greek-Catholic church of St. Andrew that belongs the Order of St. Basil the Great. Holy services are held on Sundays.

The Old Town of Vilnius (Lithuanian: Vilniaus senamiestis, Polish: Stare Miasto w Wilnie), one of the largest surviving medieval old towns in Northern Europe, has an area of 3.59 square kilometres (887 acres). It encompasses 74 quarters, with 70 streets and lanes numbering 1487 buildings with a total floor area of 1,497,000 square meters. The oldest part of the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, it has developed over the course of many centuries, and has been shaped by the city's history and a constantly changing cultural influence. It is a place where some of Europe's greatest architectural styles - gothic, renaissance, baroque and neoclassical - stand side by side and complement each other.
Pilies Street is the Old Town's main artery and the hub of cafe and street market life. The main street of Vilnius, Gediminas Avenue, is partially located in the Old Town. The central squares in the Old Town are the Cathedral Square and the Town Hall Square.
One of the most elaborate architectural complexes is the Vilnius University Architectural Ensemble, which occupies a large part of the Old Town and has 13 courtyards. It was selected to represent Lithuania in the Mini-Europe Park in Brussels.
In 1994 the Vilnius Old Town was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List (No. 541) in recognition of its universal value and originality. The definition of historic center itself has a broader meaning than the Old Town, formerly encircled with defensive walls. It embraces the valuable historical suburbs of Vilnius, such as Užupis, which historically used to be outside the city boundaries. Therefore Užupis is often considered a part of the Old Town of Vilnius.
