The Llangollen Railway (Welsh: Rheilffordd Llangollen) is a volunteer-run heritage railway in Denbighshire, North Wales, which operates between Llangollen and Corwen. The standard gauge line, which is 10 miles (16 km) long, runs on part of the former Ruabon - Barmouth GWR route that closed in 1965. It operates daily services in the summer as well as weekends throughout the winter months, using a variety of mainly ex-GWR steam locomotives as well as several diesel engines and diesel multiple units. A 2 1⁄2 miles (4 km) extension of the railway has been built to complete the line to Corwen.

Llangollen to Berwyn in 1960
This clip will appeal to all those who know and love the Llangollen Railway today as it depicts the line in 1960 when it was still in normal use by British Railways. We are riding aboard a train hauled by ex-LMS Ivatt 'Mucky Duck' class 2MT small mogul no. 46436 and it can be seen how accurately the modern Llangollen Railway has recreated the experience of riding the line more than half a century ago. Further extracts of this journey will follow over the next few weeks . . . .

Ruabon to Llangollen - 1964
Dr Beeching considered the long line from Ruabon to Barmouth along the Dee valley to be surplus to requirements and its complete closure was scheduled for 18th January 1965. In the autumn of its days the ex-LMS Ivatt class 2 2-6-0 moguls were the reular motive power and we await the arrival of 46512 at Ruabon station before boarding its train and taking a journey along the double-tracked section of this route down to Llangollen, the part of the line passing through Trevor which many supporters of today's Llangollen Railway hope can one day be restored to make a connection with the national rail network once again. Ruabon will never have such complex trackwork again though!

LMS Stanier Black 5 leaves Berwyn Station
With spare steam lifting its safety valves, 1932 built Stanier LMS Class 5MT 'Black 5' 4-6-0 45337 pulls away from Berwyn Station on the Llangollen Railway with a short train to Glyndyfrdwy Station, the next on the line where there was a display of other classic transport.
If you watch it a second time look out for the problem some road traffic has in negotiating that sharp turn off the main road. When the line and station were first opened on 1st May 1865, that side road and junction never existed. It first appears on the 1912 OS maps. Previous to that there was only the chain link pedestrian bridge over the River Dee down below the station. That is still there and in use.
