Drunk breakfast in the oldest market in Ukraine ???????? Bessarabsky Market
In Ukraine, we lost track of time and after waking up very late, we ended in the oldest market in Kyiv, Bessarabsky Market, where my great and bald friend, Giovanni, wanted to have a beer from breakfast :)
From Wikipedia:
The Besarabsky Market (Ukrainian: Бесарабський ринок, Besarabs'kyi rynok), also referred to as the Besarabka (Ukrainian: Бесарабка), is an indoor market located in the center of Kiev on the Bessarabska Square at the southwest end of the city's main thoroughfare, the Khreshchatyk. Constructed in 1910-1912 to a design of Polish architect Henryk Julian Gay, the market features 896 square metres (9,640 sq ft) of market space.
Its name originates from Bessarabia, a region conquered by the Russian Empire during the Russo-Turkish Wars and now partially located in southwestern Ukraine on the territory of the Odessa Oblast (province).

The Bessarabian market:
The Bessarabian market or Bessarabka – is a large indoor market, located in the center of Kiev on Bessarabska Square that is located on the western end of Khreshchatik, the main and the most famous street in Kiev. The building was created in 1910-1912 on the money that a famous sugar magnate in Kiev, a Jew Lazar Brodskiy, left by his will. The market was opened on July 3, 1912.The name of the market dates back to Bessarabia region, liberated from Turkish rule by the Russian Empire during the Russian-Turkish wars and located partly in present-day Ukraine in Odessa region. Today the building of the market is a commune property. According to the opinions of native inhabitants and tourists the Bessarabian market is considered to be the most expensive market in Kiev. Idioms expensive as on Bessarabka, or we're not on Bessarabka (within the meaning of the bargaining irrelevant) have become part of the daily lives of people in Kiev. It’s been 90 years that the Bessarabian market has been serving to the people of Kiev and its guests.

Khreshchatyk Street:
Khreshchatyk is the main street of Kiev, Ukraine. The street has a length of 1.2 km. It stretches from the European Square (northeast) through the Maidan and to Bessarabska Square (southwest) where the Besarabsky Market is located. Along the street are located buildings of the Kiev City Administration which contains both the city's council and the state administration, the Main Post Office, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the State Committee of Television and Radio Broadcasting, the Central Department Store (TsUM), the Besarabka Market, the Ukrainian House, and others. The entire street was completely destroyed during World War II by the retreating Red Army troops and rebuilt in the neo-classical style of post-war Stalinist architecture. Among prominent buildings that did not survive were the Kiev City Duma, the Kiev Stock Exchange, Hotel Natsional, the Ginzburg House. The street has been significantly renovated during the modern period of Ukraine's independence. Today, the street is still significant to administrative and business city organizations, as well as a popular tourist attraction.
As of 2010, Khreshchatyk is included in the Top 20 of most expensive shopping streets in Europe.
Khreshchatyk is a popular attraction for tourists. During weekends and public holidays, the street is closed to road traffic and reserved for pedestrians.
Khreshchatyk contains many up-market stores, cafés, and restaurants.

Zhytniy Rynok, Kyiv ???? Tour the OLDEST Soviet market in Kiev Ukraine Житній Ринок Київ Zhitnii Rynok
Житній Ринок (Житний Рынок) Zhitnii Rynok tour the oldest Soviet food market in Kyiv Ukraine (Київ Україна / Киев Украина). Enjoy the visuals of this relic of post-realism modernist architecture and obscure food vendor stalls in Podil Kiev.
While the building is only around 40-years-old, the area of Zhytniy Rynok has been the main marketplace region of Kiev since the 15th century.

The building of the market is quite unique and unusual, it was built during the Soviet period and slightly resembles a Chinese pagoda. When you come inside it might seem a little chaotic, but take your time to look around.
Here’s what you can do here – buy local food, watch local people buying food (it can be fun), buy dried fruit from the Uzbeks, buy kosher food from the Jewish supermarket, have Georgian hatchapuri (layered cheese bread), have a cup of freshly squeezed Azerbaijan pomegranate juice, have a glass of local Ukrainian wine or cider which is sold on tap at one of the stalls along with local cheese.
Then, you can go outside, on the right side of the market there are lots of repair shops. They are also part of the fun. If you need to mend your shoe, fix your zipper, make a copy of your key or sharpen your knife, it’s all here!
