Route 62 (Part 1) Robertson Backpackers and Wine Tasting South Africa
About an one and a half hours drive from Cape Town on the scenic Route 62 lies the town of Robertson.
Robertson is famous for breeding thoroughbred race horses and of course its many top quality wine estates.
The nice thing about tasting wine in Robertson is the fact that tasting is free, unlike many other wine regions in the country. The wine estates are truely beautiful, with beautiful flaming red roses, kannas and bougainvillea lining the edges of the roads and orchards.
Things to do in South Africa: Kogel Bay Resort (where Maze Runner was filmed!)
We drive by the Kogel Bay Resort often and ever since we saw that they shot a movie there, we've been curious to find out what...until we watched Maze Runner: Death Cure! The final scenes were shot on the beach here at Kogel Bay Resort! The camping spots here are indescribable and the views, wildlife and hiking trails are absolutely breathtaking. If camping right on the beach is your thing, this is the place for you.

Gatsby Sandwich - Eating South African Food in Cape Town, South Africa
Join us as we eat the Gatsby submarine sandwich for lunch in Cape Town, South Africa at Miriam's Kitchen. Originating from the Cape Flats area of Cape Town the Gatsby Sandwich is named after 'The Great Gatsby' novel by author F. Scott Fitzgerald. Originally the Gatsby sandwich was basically large rolls filled with whatever was leftover from supper but in a restaurant today you'll typically find ingredients such as hot chips (French Fries), slap chips (fries with vinegar), achar and/or piri piri sauce and ingredients such as chargrilled steak, chicken, masala steak or pickled fish. It makes for a great budget meal if you're visiting Cape Town.

Gatsby Sandwich - Eating South African Food in Cape Town, South Africa Video Transcript:
What have we done?
Oh, what have we done?
Oh my gosh. Okay, so today we're in Cape Town and we wanted to try the Gatsby. This is a dish that apparently originated in the Cape Flats.
It is fast food so we thought hey let's order two half portions and then this behemoth of a meal arrived and I'm not entirely sure how we're going to eat all of this.
I don't think we can accurately portray just how big this is. It is huge. Put your hand out.
My hands. Tada.
Like this thing is enormous. It is like bigger than my head. This is the half portion.
This is way bigger than your head.
Imagine if we had gotten the full one. Like the bread would be out to here. Like, this is to feed a family. It is enough food to feed a group of friends and we're going to eat all of this. Just the two of us. Arggh!
Okay, so it is time introduce you to the Gatsby. Time to tuck into it but first basically it is just if you can imagine it is a massive submarine sandwich. Yeah. You can see it is shaped like a submarine.
If we actually went like that you can see that is probably what a large one looks like. Yes, that would be one large basically.
Maybe one large one.
And anyways yeah. Let's take a look and see what is inside. So it is filled with chips. That is the key ingredient. Every Gatsby has chips. Woah, look at how many chips there are.
And then the one that I got here is the Steak Masala so you can see there is a big generous chunk of steak. Big hunk of steak.
I noticed some lettuce at the bottom. There is a bit of salad in there as well. Yeah, there is a little bit of salad but is obviously at the very very bottom.
Yeah, and we noticed on the menu they had a whole bunch of fillings. You can get it with hotdog, sausage, eggs.
They had one with curry as well too. So many options.
You can get anything you want really. Alright, so let's actually go in for the first bite. Actually they just told us we're supposed to be eating this with our hands.
I got mine, I think there is barbecue and maybe like a bit of piri piri. That is like really spicy so you really taste the chips, you taste the steak and then of course there is not a lot of salad in there. I have to say. I do think there is some onions but my gosh. You know what this is like hangover food.
This is the ultimate hangover food when you have a you feel you're a lot more hungry than you actually are.
And not only that I kind of feel like this is the type of food that what was probably created by a ten year old. Mom, mom let's make a giant sandwich let's throw in some french fries, let's throw in some steak.
My gosh that is good. The Gatsby for the win.
Alright, so I'm already getting full eating Sam's chips. I haven't even touched mine. So let's have a look. I ordered the one with chips and cheese. Oh look at that and tomato sauce and piri piri spice on the chips and it also has salad.
So yeah. Oh my gosh. My goal is to try and finish at least one piece. It is so big it is hard to even pick up. Look at that.
Yours must be spicy? It is good. Well the tomato sauce is sweet so it balances out but seriously this is like carb overload. Bread and potatoes. Yeah, there is no way we each needed our own half one. We could have shared a half. We will try our best. Had we known. Had we known. We'll try our best to finish it.
My gosh. I don't even want to know how many calories are in that thing.

Mesmerizing SOUTH AFRICA | Rocklands & Cape Town
The best holidays are those, where you combine everything you need and love, where even after 3 weeks, you still wanna continue. For us that meant going on a climbing trip, to a new destination, where the temperatures are good, the food is delicious, the people are lovely and the company is top notch. :)
“Rocklands and Cape Town, here we come!”
What an amazing trip this has been! A massive amount of fantastic boulder problems, breathtaking nature and sunsets, we got to see the penguins and snorkel/dive with seals, enjoyed the beauty of Cape Of Good Hope, Bo-Kaap, Muizenberg beach and lots of other places, indulging local wine was simply beautiful and millions of other things made our trip perfect.
Thank you South Africa, thank you my dearest friends - you are marvelous!

9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Pieter Ferreira, Head Winemaker for Graham Beck Vineyards:
It's the area with the highest natural limestone, in the Cape. And it's pretty good for ensuring, you know, firm acidities, so you know we're lucky we can stay away from the acid bags, adding acidity - which is nice, a sort of a GREEN, nice green approach.

19. SOUNDBITE: (English) David Trafford, CEO of de Trafford Wines:
It's more of a symbolic thing, recognising that we do have fantastic agricultural product, in especially wine. Wine, I think if Africa is going to pick itself up and not be the sort of underdog continent of the world, I think agriculture is one of the main things that can help in that process. And wine being one of the most sophisticated agricultural forms. It's quite important in that sense, or can be quite significant.
20. Wide shot of Stellenbosch valley from De Trafford Estate
21. Close up of Pinot Noir grapes on vine at Graham Beck estate with sun flare
22. SOUNDBITE: (English) Pieter Ferreira, Head Winemaker for Graham Beck Vineyards:
You know, we've got pretty much our destiny in our own hands. We've got beautiful vineyards, we really pamper them and really make sure we start off with a 100% fruit component. We know what the end result is because the marketeers lead us in that direction. But it's given us free will to sort of really concentrate on the mid palate. So, I think the team at Graham Beck is mid-palate winemakers, you know.. We just want to make that journey - of the wine on your palate, last a little while longer.
23. Wide shot of Pieter Ferreira and staff pushing grapes through to a tank
24. Close up of grapes being pushed through the tank
25. Medium shot of French intern working in tank
26. SOUNDBITE (French): Roman Henrion, intern at Graham Beck Vineyard:
For sure it is another philosophy here, its not the same terroir, it is not the same climactic conditions, its another approach.
27. Medium shot of Roman working at tank
28. SOUNDBITE (French): Roman Henrion, intern at Graham Beck Vineyard:
But it is a product that is very similar to our product in Champagne. It is a very beautiful product, very well done, and for me, it is really of a high quality.

1976 Rugby Union match: South Africa Springboks vs New Zealand All Blacks (3rd Test)
For decades and today, the Springboks and All Blacks has a rivalry that been intense, controversial, etc. This 1976 match in Newlands Ground was one of those matches. Years later, the controversial 1981 tour to NZ. More came after that. This 1976 Tour was controversial because the African countries wanted the New Zealanders out of the Olympics because of this tour. The IOC didn't respond back because the IRFB (now IRB) controls rugger and it doesn't have nothing to do with the Olympics. The only thing IRFB really do back then is to get countries into their membership. They didn't really did anything back in the amateur era but they barely change the rules of the game and helped the Kiwis and Aussies launch the World Cup in '87.
The All Blacks lost the series to the Boks 3-1 and they didn't win a series in South Africa until professionalism was in its infancy in 1996. Commentary is in Afrikaans

Is Sailing in East Africa Dangerous? Preparing for Passage when DANGER LURKS! Patrick Childress#34
Sailing Africa- Dangers and Navigation Hazards for Sailboats. Preparing for a Passage in Africa and shipwrecks along coasts worldwide - Patrick Childress Sailing Tips #34 Do sailboats always have the Right of way? Is Sailing Dangerous? Preparing for a passage, and for Sailing dangers, on our cruising sailboat, a Valiant 40, one sailing preparation we do on a coastal passage as well as an offshore passage, is a complete sailboat engine room tour and engine service. We stow everything as though there will be a surprise storm at sea while sailing in Africa, check the weather and tides, plot our course, and leave at first light, one of our coastal sailing tips for all sailboats. Preparation for Passage is something we take seriously, whether for a coastal passage or an offshore passage, and especially when sailing in Africa and Asia because there is a lot of danger for sailboats! There are dangers for sailboats everywhere in the world as evident in one of the best sailing videos of the year! Patrick Childress Sailing videos #34
What are the dangers for a sailboat in Africa? How common are disasters at sea, for cruising sailboat, cruising at night without radar, sailing in East Africa is dangerous. Were the navigation lights too dim? Maybe he did not see navigation lights at all.
How dangerous sailing in Africa some people would say! But what are the dangers for sailboat in Africa? What are the dangers for sailboats at sea anywhere? Are sailboat crashes common in East Africa? Are Yacht accidents common everywhere in the world?
What happens when a sailboat hits a tow line? This cruising sailboat, while coastal sailing at night, when a boat hits a tow line, it is almost dragged under by the tow line during this yacht accident with a tugboat and barge. This is one of Tanzania's most recent sailboat crashes, but the captain is hoping to win the battle with the tug boat's insurance company. But who's fault was it? This Bluewater sailboat is no longer ready for Bluewater Sailing, and great danger for sailing, in this sailing videos.
This Navigation Lights, Rules and Regulations Handbook is important :
This is the inexpensive Quick Reference to Navigation Lights that Patrick recommends :
This is the Cruising Guide to East Africa, though local knowledge and information from current cruisers is really what to pay the most attention to. But this is a great base to start from. It can also be purchased from Bluewater Books and Charts in Florida.

Iwan Baan: Ingenious homes in unexpected places
In the center of Caracas, Venezuela, stands the 45-story Tower of David, an unfinished, abandoned skyscraper. But about eight years ago, people started moving in. Photographer Iwan Baan shows how people build homes in unlikely places, touring us through the family apartments of Torre David, a city on the water in Nigeria, and an underground village in China. Glorious images celebrate humanity's ability to survive and make a home -- anywhere.
