BELGIAN BEER TASTING - at the best Bar in Bruges, Belgium (Volkscafe Sint-Jakobs)
Belgium is world renowned for it's beer, and we knew our trip wouldn't be complete without sampling at least some (a lot) of it! We knew the best place to go as well, Volkscafe Sint-Jakobs, a cosy neighbourhood bar right in the city centre of Bruges. Run by the brilliant Tom, by far the best bar owner we've ever come across! He's so knowledgeable about all the beer he sells and has created such a warm and friendly environment in what we now like to call, the best bar in Bruges!

We had 3 incredible beers each. Rebecca started off lightly with a Lindemans Pecheresse, a beautiful peach lambic, before moving onto the hanging Gentse Strop and finally a Blond Ename, brewed by the oldest brewery in Belgium, Roman. Nathan went in heavy straight away with an Adrien Brouwer Winter Wood, a strong but sweet winter beer which turned out to be the favourite of the night. Second up was a nice refreshing wheat beer and finally a Cherry Kriek Max fruit beer to end the night.

Biografie
Blues… en kruispunten… het is al van bij het prille begin dat deze combinatie tot de verbeelding spreekt. En ook al is het al een hele poos geleden dat Robert Johnson op zo’n kruispunt op zijn knieën viel, voor heel wat muzikanten en liefhebbers is de blues een blijvende bron van inspiratie.
Zelden kruisten de wegen van vier ervaren bluesmuzikanten – die de laatste jaren actief waren in bands als Slow Burners en Howlin’ Bill – onder zo’n positief gesternte. En deze keer hebben ze een missie.
Terwijl de bandleden geregeld teruggrijpen naar hun roots en op tekstueel vlak vanuit de puurste traditie de mensen de blues willen laten beleven, staan ze evengoed met beide voeten in het heden. Dit vertaalt zich in een resolute keuze voor eigentijdse muzikale arrangementen waar de vonken en het spelplezier vanaf spatten. Het blijkt een combinatie waarmee Bill and the Burners hun publiek niet warm, maar gloeiend heet maken voor hét muziekgenre dat aan de basis ligt van alles wat tegenwoordig nog wordt geproduceerd: de Blues. Mét hoofdletter!

Blues… and crossroads… From the very beginning, this combination appeals to one’s imagination… And even though it’s been quite a while that Robert Johnson fell down on his knees, the blues keeps on inspiring a lot of musicians and fans.
It doesn’t happen that often that four experienced bluesmen – who were active in bands like Slow Burners and Howlin’ Bill – find themselves under such a favourable constellation. And this time, they’re on a mission.
Although the band members often go back to their roots by wanting to make people experience the blues in its purest form, they do make music in the present. Their sparkling contemperary musical arrangements are a living proof. It seems to be that Howlin’ Bill and the Burners don’t just warm up their audiences with some fine tunes… They turn them red hot with the music that still is the base of everything that is being produced today: the Blues. With a capital ‘B’!

Blues... et intersections... c'est dès le début que cette combinaison fait appel à l'imagination. Et même si Robert Johnson ne s'est pas mis à genoux depuis longtemps à un tel carrefour, le blues est pour beaucoup de musiciens et de passionnés une source d'inspiration durable.
Rarement les parcours des quatre musiciens de blues expérimentés - qui ont été actifs ces dernières années dans des groupes comme Slow Burners et Howlin' Bill - n'ont rencontré une telle vedette positive. Et cette fois, ils ont une mission.
Si les membres du groupe reviennent régulièrement à leurs racines et veulent laisser les gens vivre le blues à un niveau textuel de la plus pure tradition, ils se tiennent aussi les deux pieds dans le présent. Cela se traduit par un choix résolu d'arrangements musicaux contemporains dont les étincelles et le plaisir de jouer éclaboussent. Il s'avère que c'est une combinaison avec laquelle Howlin' Bill et les Burners ne réchauffent pas leur public, mais le font briller pour le genre musical qui est à la base de tout ce qui est encore produit aujourd'hui: les Blues. Avec majuscule!
