South Africa
This project was for our Community-based Project Module (JCP) of the Faculty Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology of the University of Pretoria.
For our community project we had to build new nest boxes for a bird enclosure at the Bester Birds and Animal Park Zoo. The nest boxes were for a variety of bird species and had to accommodate both large and small birds. We even had to build a nest box for the ducks because their old nest box was falling apart, hard to access and never used.
We used plastic to construct all the nest boxes because plastic is affordable, easy to clean, durable and safe for the birds. We constructed 4 of the nest boxes out of plastic buckets, made a nest hive for the smaller birds, made hanging nests out of recycled 2l plastic bottles and made a new nest box for the ducks.
It was a really fun project to do and we learned a lot about birds, their habitats and their needs. We also discovered lots of fun and creative ways to build nest boxes for the birds, that even involved recycling.
Thank you to The University of Pretoria and Bester Birds and Animal Zoo Park for making this project possible!

JCP 2015 Group 179, Bester Birds and Animal Zoo Park, Vulture Enclosure
This was a project of the Community-Based Project of the Faculty Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology of the University of Pretoria. This project was done at Bester Birds and Animal Zoo Park (address is included in the video). We as a group learned a lot from this experience. We learned how to work as a team as well as how to compromise. The vultures and the team at Bester Birds taught us a lot; like the behaviour and needs of the vultures. Vultures are actually quite curious and fascinating animals which most people won't expect. Helping people is a fulfilling experience which taught us that giving back to the community and the less fortunate is an important task which everyone should experience.

Danielle Reddy (BEng Chemical Engineering), Suvira Deosaran (BEng Chemical Engineering), Sheridan Smith (BEng Mechanical Engineering), Prasheel Pillay (BEng Chemical Engineering) and Ian Carstens (BEng Electronic Engineering).
Since none of us had any civil knowledge and/or experience, this was a big learning curve for us and gave us the opportunity to research what to do and to tackle the huge challenge ahead of us. We are incredibly thankful to the University of Pretoria and Bester Birds and Animal Zoo Park for the opportunity to give back to the community as this has humbled us and helped us gain more knowledge and hands-on experience of the civil industry.
