Bestwood Winding Engine House - An Industrial Monster in Motion
A relic from the time when Britain was the Workshop of the World! The 1876 Bestwood Colliery Winding Engine can be seen in motion once again on Saturday mornings (10.00am - 12 Noon). Nowadays the engine is run by an electric motor and unfortunately not by steam. However, it is quite a magnificent site, truly an industrial monster in motion!
Bestwood Colliery Winding Engine House (1st April 2014)
After visiting Midland Railway - Butterley in Derbyshire, I drove back into Nottinghamshire to visit Bestwood Country Park. The main reason for my visit, of course being industrial archaeological enthusiast, was the remains of Bestwood Colliery.
In the country park, the preserved remains of Bestwood Colliery consists of the Winding Engine House with the Pit-Head Gear and the Dynamo House. As it was a week day, the winding house wasn't open to the public, so I couldn't get the chance to see the massive 1876-built vertical stationary steam engine. The opening times for the winding house is Saturday mornings from 10am to 12noon between Easter and October.
However, I was quite impressed with the gigantic size of the colliery winding house, and even from the top of the hill overlooking the park, you can see how once it dominated the skyline of Bestwood village.

Bestwood, Nottingham.
Various shots of a coal mine. Men arrive at the mine and travel down to the coal face to work there; drilling, shovelling and blasting coal. An explosive charge is set off to break down the coal for loading into trucks. The trucks go up to the surface and into the tippler machine, where the coal is tipped out to be cleaned and sorted by men. Commentator says the average age of the men working here is 27. At the end of the working day, the men return their safety lamps.
Good footage of a working coal mine.

Bestwood Country Park, Nottinghamshire
This 650 acre park on the northern fringe of Nottingham has an incredible variety of different wildlife habitats.
From Mill Lakes, teeming with water birds, to meadows full of wildflowers, from ancient oak woodland to a reclaimed pit tip, Bestwood has a landscape which reflects the varied history of Nottinghamshire itself.
Middleton Top winding engines.mov
These two massive low-pressure engines (supplied with steam at 5 pounds per square inch) were built for the Cromford and High Peak Railway by the Butterley Company of Codnor Park, Derbyshire, in 1829. They drove the winding gear which brought wagons up the Middleton Incline, which is 708 yards long with a gradient of 1 in 8.25. The engines are no longer worked by steam. For demonstration purposes they are powered by slightly compressed (3-6 lb. sq. in.) air from an electrically-powered blower.

Caphouse Colliery Steam Winding Engine
The steam winding engines that were in common place in our coal mines are now a distant memory to those but a privileged few. In the mid 70’s I was fortunate enough to see both the Donisthorpe and Marquis (Rawdon) Collierys steam winders in operation.
All three winders operated on shafts around 300 yards deep, at Donisthorpe Colliery the winder said he could manage around 58 runs an hour. He said the cage would be running at 30 feet per second.

Middleton Top Engine house
Middleton Top Engine house on the old Cromford and high peak railway is the only one of the original winding engines on the C.H.P.R to still be in its original location atop its inclined plane, and is still run sadly not on steam but on compressed air, the rails on the plane were removed in 1963.
