swcwalks, swcwalk 16, Dorking to Reigate. 25/1/19.
This was another very decent shorter walk of around 9 miles. This time at the foot of the Surrey Hills, in the Mole Valley.
Starting out from the station at Deepdene, the walker passes the Main station prior to a section of road walking. Arriving in more tranquil surroundings shortly afterwards, the hum of traffic is always present early on. Passing the golf club at Betchworth, there's a pleasant section of walking before arriving at the village of Brockham, with its restored water pump.
Lunch is had at St Michael's church, Betchworth (whose lychgate is seen in 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'). What follows is the quietest part of the walk, but, potentially, the wettest. No issues today though.
Passing through Skimmington, the walker eventually reaches a section of ridge walking in Reigate Park Hill. Passing the former Priory, it's on back to the station.
A good walk that gives the walker a different perspective of Box Hill for a change. Certain sections are heavily eroded by horses and others are suspect to flooding. Alternatives are given in the good instructions, should the latter occur.

Betchworth Castle (ruins)
The fortified house of West Betchworth was traditionally home to the lords of that manor. Betchworth Castle was built in the 11th century by Robert Fitz Gilbert to be used as an earthwork fortress. In 1379 Sir John Fitzalan turned it into a stone castle. in the 15th century the castle was rebuilt by Sir Thomas Browne.
In 1798 the estate stretched from the zigzag at Box Hill to beyond Blackbrook. Sir John Soane was commissioned by the owner, Henry Peters to design alterations to the house and park; the stable block remains but converted into houses.
Betchworth Castle Ruin The house was bought by Henry Hope to add to his Deepdene estate in 1834, and much of the masonry was removed for work elsewhere. The Castle was allowed to collapse to create a picturesque ruin.
In 2008 Mole Valley District Council sold the ruin for £1.00 to a Betchworth resident Martin Higgins who is planning to breathe life back into the castle.
The castle is said to be haunted by a black dog (death dog) that prowls the ruins at night, also the grounds of the castle (Betchworth Park golf course) is haunted by evil or unexplained things, one[who?] has photos to prove this. Owner Lord Hope (Either a mistaken reference to Henry Thomas Hope or his grandson Francis Pelham-Clinton-Hope, 8th Duke of Newcastle who was forced to take that name by his grandmother) - (the latter became the lord of the manor of Brockham rather than owner of Deepdene) he chased and killed an escaping convict with his sword. He later found out that it was in fact his own son he had killed. Lord Hope is said to now walk around the ruins in regret.
(21/08/2014 - UPDATE info from owner re-stone slabs in driveway)
Work on the terrace wall starts next week. The stone slabs come from a factory in Preston, not local at all. They are only being stored temporarily on the drive.
Allan Brigham Dorking Guided Walk
Allan Brigham -- Hidden Behind The High Street Of Dorking. For more information and pictures:
This video is just a taster of Allans great guided walk / talk in the streets of Dorking. Though the weather was poor over 50 people turned up to participate.
A wonderful two hours wandering around Dorking with a great guide. Allan gave a great mix of the social history of Dorking and the neighbouring Surrey area.Whilst he now lives in Cambridge he was brought up in Dorking and family still lives there. Over 50 people followed him around either side of the Dorking High Street.
Starting outside the Almshouses in Cotmandene. He talked about the commons origin and that cricket was played there from 1700 with a great advantage to the local team, as there cannot be a more uneven cricket field in the country.
From there he advance via the Cubit statue to Pippbrook House.
Unfortunately Pippbrook cannot sadly be visited now. Built by Foreman the Suffolk MP! in the Victorian trendy Gothic style. Though he sadly died within 5 years of it being built.
We then visited Pippbrook watermill, one of six on the Pipp Brook in the 19th Century (Rookery Mill, Westcott Mill, Milton Court Mill, Parsonage Mill, Pipp Brook Mill and Pixham Mill). Pipp Brook Mill was working into the 20th century.AllanBrighamTalk360w
We then had a history of St Martins Church including the Flagstone of the Duke of Norfolk and the fact that the church was rebuild twice in the 19th century. Included was the claim that it was the second highest in England, which I need to check, as at University, St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol claimed to be the third highest at 292ft? So not sure its 210 feet wil be higher enough!
We finished the tour with a discussion about Rose Hill and how it became the Victorian image of what the upper classes had, including domestic animals grazing up to their doorstep. So the estate was build around a small park. Including semi-detached that mimicked the larger houses.
If you get the opportunity to take one of Allans talks and walks- take it.

Walks in England: Exploring Betchworth Castle
Betchworth Castle is a mostly crumbled ruin of a fortified medieval stone house with some tall, two-storey corners strengthened in the 18th century, in the north of the semi-rural parish of Brockham. It is built on a sandstone spur overlooking the western bank of the Mole in Surrey in England. The ruin is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is in the lowest category of listed architecture, Grade II, 1.2 miles due east of Dorking railway station in Dorking and 4 miles due west of Reigate.

Investigating Betchworth Castle Part 1
On Wednesday 15th Feb 2017 we investigated Betchworth Castle.
This was our second time of vising this beautiful historic ruin.
On our first visit nothing strange happened however on our second visit we caught some amazing voices using our psb7.
One of our investigators Oliver caught a white hooded figure using his camera which did not appear in any other off his photos. We tried to debunk this but could not think of any explanation. In part 2 off this investigation you will see the footage of when Olly caught this phenomenon figure. To see the full photo and a zoomed in photo visit our Facebook page in the link below.
