Betty’s Hope, Antigua
Founded in 1650 as the first sugar plantation on Antigua, Betty’s Hope ran for three centuries, growing and processing sugar cane for rum distilling. An important heritage site, it has a handful of interpretive plaques among the ruins and one remaining windmill.

Antigua: Day 9
Today we visited the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda. The building was once an old courthouse. It is very small, yet full of history. There are maps that show the flow of England's trade routes to the island, old slave pottery uncovered from Betty's Hope, the Emancipation Proclamation of the island, lots of pictures and artifacts. The tour guide, Leah NeCosa told us about the ecological program that she is involved in, saving the Antiguan Racer, a small snake that is endangered. Rats were eradicated from most of the islands, thus increasing the snake and nesting bird populations. The museum is funded privately through donations and grants. Later we went to the open market to shop for lunch. We negotiated with the vendors for okra, plantains, coconuts, lettuce and tomatoes. Dinner was in the boatyard area at the Captains Club, a beautiful sea side restaurant with a fantastic singer and musician.
Tomorrow, we go to another beach in the dockyards and to the open market for souvenirs.

Antigua: Day 3
Today we visited several historic sites around the island. Our first tour was to Shirley Heights, a beautiful old fortress, high in the mountains overlooking a pristine valley. Our driver, Mr. Bailey, invited us to his home and gardens where we saw banana, plum and mango tress along with a goat and several dogs. Our third adventure was to Betty's Hope. The name is misleading because Betty's Hope was an old sugarcane plantation that profited from African slave labor. Next it was off to the Devil's Bridge, a natural limestone bridge formed through erosion by the Atlantic Ocean. Charmaine, a local souvenir entrepreneur and tour guide told us the myth about the formation. We were invited to Abracadabra for dinner and their final night of the season. Thank you Angelo and Paulo for three nights of exquisite Italian dining.
The Lookout , Antigua
At the most southerly tip of Antigua, The Lookout, part of the Shirley Heights military complex, commands a breathtaking view over the whole of English Harbour. Behind the catchment on the highest ground, 490ft (150m) above sea level, was the Signal Station from which a system of flags was used by day and guns by night to convey messages to St, John's by way of Great Fort George on Monk's Hill.
The Shirley Heights military complex also included a guard house, magazine and kitchen, officers' quarters, adjoining parade grounds, a 40-bed hospital, canteen, and a cemetery. An obelisk in the cemetery commemorates the officers and men of the 54th Regiment (2nd Battalion Dorsets) who died in service in the West Indies between 1840 and 1851.
