Part 1 Virtual Tour of Salem Massachusetts
A virtual tour of Salem Massachusetts focusing on the history of the Salem Witch Trials. On October 12, 2015 I visited the Salem Witch House and the Salem Witch Trials Memorial. This is Part 1 of my Empire State College Capstone Project for Virtual Tours in History.
Bewitched Statue Salem, MA Good or Bad idea?
Back in 2005 TV Land built a bronze statue right in the heart of downtown Salem, Massachusetts as a tribute to the sitcom Bewitched. Some people found this to be a disrespectful decision, making light of Salem's witch history. Take an up close look at the Bewitched statue, hear both schools of thought, and decide for yourself if the Witch City made the right call.

I sincerely hope you enjoy this video and find it helpful. Cheers to fall, Salem, and Halloween!
A few things I forgot to mention:
If you're a photographer looking for a beautiful street with gorgeous old homes, Salem has plenty, but Chestnut Street is stunning and definitely worth a walk down. Close to Essex street and the Ropes Mansion.
I went on the candlelit ghost tour at night and definitely would recommend it - tickets can be purchased near the Burying Point Cemetery. You'll see signs.
Turner's Seafood and Bambolina Restaurant (pizza) were the only places we stopped at for food and both were amazing.

Salem, the witch town of Massachusetts
#Salem -- #CanaldeJoseArcesio
Salem, the witch town of Massachusetts
Salem is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States.
The so-called City of Witches (Witch City) because of the trials that took place in the year 1692, is located on the US Atlantic coast, 25 km north of Boston.
The city owes its growth to its strategic port, which acquired important influence during the peak of commercial traffic with Africa, India, Russia, Sumatra and China; in the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth. Recently, and taking into account its history, as its rich architecture of the aforementioned period- (recognized aspects both locally and internationally), it was granted the status of National Historical Heritage. There are more than 60 restaurants, coffee shops and coffee shops in the center of the city.
Salem receives more than one million visitors a year, who come from all over the world. This city concentrates a great part of the historical places of the state of Massachusetts, in addition to museums, cultural activities, fine restaurants and select businesses.
The Samuel McIntyre Historic District consists of four hundred and seven buildings. It is the largest agglutination of buildings in colonial America in the United States. Inside it is McIntyre's own house. Samuel McIntyre, or McIntire, (January 16, 1757 February 6, 1811) was an American architect and craftsman. It is a prime example of federal style architecture. He developed most of his work in his hometown, Salem, Massachusetts.
Known as The people of witches, Salem is a city located in the state of Massachusetts that is currently visited by thousands of tourists intrigued by terrifying stories that are woven on that place.
The event that gave rise to the fame of witch people to Salem occurred in 1962, when the settlers began a witch hunt that ended with the imprisonment of more than 150 men and women.
This hunt began in January of that year, after the daughter of the Reverend Samuel Parris fell ill. The diagnosis of the doctor was that they had bewitched her.
That provoked a mass hysteria in Salem that caused 13 women and 6 men to be condemned to the gallows, accused of practicing witchcraft and performing satanic rites.
At present, there is a museum dedicated to explain this event, and a tour that takes tourists to visit the sites related to the witch hunt.

Connecticut Witch Trials: Witch Hysteria in America Long Before Salem | AF-254
If you thought the infamous Salem witch trials of 1692 were the only incident of witch hysteria in colonial America, that is understandable. This incident is widely known and talked about, probably because of the sheer volume of numbers of people who were convicted and accused. There were twenty victims who were unjustly executed, while hundreds more for miles around and from far outside of Salem were accused and spent time in jail before the hysteria ended. However, the incident in Salem Village was not the first or only time this happened in colonial America. There are other incidents of witch hysteria or individual witch accusations that are simply overlooked. One of the most notorious of these “forgotten” witch incidents happened a generation before Salem in Hartford, Connecticut...

Salem, MA Where is Gallows Hill? Finding the Hanging tree
After reading about this in the book Weird Massachusetts I realized both possible locations of Gallows Hill were very close to my house. I just always assumed that Gallows Hill Park was host to the actual site of the hangings. However, the facts will bring you to a hill behind a Walgreens parking lot. I've been to that Walgreens dozens of times and never made the connection until I read Weird Massachusetts. The purpose of the video is to recreate the route and area of the executions by showing you it through modern day images. I think its fascinating that such a historical place is tucked behind a parking lot long forgotten. Hopefully you will too.
Salem, Massachusetts
Salem is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, in the United States. The population was 41,340 at the 2010 census. Salem and Lawrence were the county seats of Essex County prior to the abolishment of county government in 1999. Home to Salem State University , the Salem Willows Park and the Peabody Essex Museum , Salem is a residential and tourist area which includes the neighborhoods of Salem Neck, The Point, South Salem and North Salem, Witchcraft Heights, Pickering Wharf, and the McIntire Historic District (named after Salem's famous architect and carver, Samuel McIntire) . Salem was one of the most significant seaports in early America.
Featured notably in Arthur Miller's The Crucible, much of the city's cultural identity is reflective of its role as the location of the Salem witch trials of 1692: Police cars are adorned with witch logos, a local public school is known as the Witchcraft Heights Elementary School, the Salem High School athletic teams are named the Witches; and Gallows Hill, a site of numerous public hangings, is currently used as a playing field for various sports. Tourists know Salem as a mix of important historical sites, New Age and Wiccan boutiques, kitschy Halloween, witch-themed attractions and a vibrant downtown that has more than 60 restaurants, cafes and coffee shops. In 2012, the Retailers Association of Massachusetts chose Salem as the recipient of their inaugural Best Shopping District award.

Salem Massachusetts is without a doubt the place to be for Halloween in the United States. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself exactly how that happened? How did a town that was ashamed of its terrible past come to build a massive economy around it?
In this first part of a three part series, we tackle that question and the answers are so very weird, there's absolutely nowhere else they could come from besides good ol' Salem Massachusetts.

The modern witch of Salem: Feminist, empowered and anti-Trump
Amid the rise in political activism, young American women have been drawn to witchcraft as a sign of feminism and community building. Salem, Massachusetts, home of the Salem Witch Trials, is ingrained in the mythos of witches and draws many women curious about the movement. Some of these witches come from families that have practiced witchcraft for generations, while others are new to the world of spells. But one thing the witches of Salem all have in common: they see it as a feminist practice.
