Complex of Sultan Bayezid II Health Museum
Sultan II. Bayezid Külliyesi
The Complex of Sultan Bayezid II Health Museum (Turkish: Sultan II Bayezid Külliyesi Sağlık Müzesi) is a hospital museum of Trakya University within the Complex of Sultan Bayezid II located in Edirne, Turkey.
A külliye is an Ottoman architectural concept that designates a complex of buildings centered on a mosque. Complex of Bayezid II Külliye was built in 1488 by the Ottoman sultan Bayezid II (reigned 1481–1512).
The complex contains a Dar al-Shifa (Turkish darüşşifa, hospital, medical center), and it remained in operation for four centuries from 1488 until the Russo-Turkish War (1877–78). The hospital was especially notable for its treatment methods for mental disorders, which included the use of music, water sound and scents.
The historic darüşşifa was incorporated into the structure of Edirne-based Trakya University in 1993, and converted into a Health Museum (Turkish: Sağlık Müzesi) in 1997, a museum dedicated to the history of medicine and health matters in general. It has been developing constantly ever since. It remains Turkey's only museum in its field and provides varied and valuable information to visitors on the development of medicine and of medical services throughout history, especially Ottoman history. The museum is the second most visited historical site in Edirne after the Selimiye Mosque. The museum was awarded the European Council's European Council Museum Award in 2004.

Sultan Bayezid II broke grounds for the construction of the complex that was built in Yeni İmaret near Tunca River in Edirne 1484 and it was put into service in 1488 (893 AH).
The architect of the Complex of Sultan Bayezid II is Hayrettin the Architect.
Withing the complex, Bayezid II had a darüşşifa (hospital), a madrasah, an imaret (soup kitchen), a double hammam, a six-abutment bridge and a mill.
The dome of the Bayezid Mosque is 22 m. and there is neither an arch nor a pillar inside. The minarets of the mosque have one very high sherefe each with nearly two hundred stairs.
The marble minbar is outstandingly elegant and the gathering place is positioned on columns of porphyry. These columns are said to have been brought from the ruins of the temple of Diana.
The sanctuary is eye catching, covered with coisters.
At the same time, a part of the complex next to the mosque is used as the Balkan Research Institute by Trakya University.
This section also organizes cocktails for the events of Trakya University and welcomes guests from outside the city.

Everybody visits Istanbul when they come to Turkey but only a few people ever make it to Edirne. Which makes it a great destination for the real travelers. It is the perfect day trip from Istanbul as it is about a 3 hour drive.
So here are 3 Reasons to Visit Edirne
#1 Selimiye Mosque
This is not just another mosque, it is considered to be one of the highest achievements of Islamic Architecture. Built between 1569-1575 by Mimar Sinan, one of the most famous Ottoman architects and is often compared to Michelangelo. Made from cut stone and marble and encompassed by a massive dome over 100 feet in diameter. Beside all this it is simply stunning and one can spend an hour or two just admiring all detail.
#2 Sultan Bayesid the second Health Museum
Built in 1488 this facility was used as a hospital and school for over 4 centuries. Here you can walk around and get a glimpse of the history of medicine in the Ottoman empire. All in all it is a pretty cool complex just to walk around.
#3 liver
Edirne is famous for their fried cow liver…it is a delicacy here. It is covered in flour and dropped into some hot oil. I’m not a huge fan of organ meat but I have to admit I think it is pretty tasty. So don’t be a wuss and miss out on this.
so if you are coming to Istanbul, and want to see the real Turkey. Take a quick day trip to Edirne. If you have any questions please leave them in the comment box below.

Power plant to be constructed on palace site in Turkey’s northwest
An energy power plant will be built in the northwestern province of Edirne, at a location where ruins from the Ottoman-era Edirne Palace might be underground.
The project, called the “River Tunca Recreation and Energy Project,” aims to construct a power plant and recreational area on the garden of the Edirne Palace.
The project, which will be a joint project of the Edirne Municipality, the Edirne Provincial Administration and the Edirne Chamber of Commerce and Industry, will be implemented by the Thrace Development Agency. The project will cost a total of 10 million Turkish Liras, of which 4 million will be paid by the Thrace Development Agency.
The area where the project will be built begins at the flood plain of the Tunca River, and covers the area where the annual Kırkpınar oil wrestling festival is held, as well as the Beyazıd II social complex. While a section of the area is the Edirne Palace’s archaeological site, no preservation order has been reserved for the area, despite the fact that it contains holds historical structures.
Construction of the Edirne Palace began in the 15th century during the reign of Murat II and ended during the reign of Fatih Sultan Mehmet in the same century. Although Istanbul was made into the imperial capital after its conquest in 1453, the Edirne Palace was seen as an important symbol of the Ottoman Empire.
According to the latest development plan, the riverbed will be altered to create new canals and islets, where boats will be able to sail and rowing competitions will be held. Along with a concert area, restaurants, cafes and tea gardens, a power plant capable of producing 1000 kilowatts of electricity will be constructed.
The project does not contain any clauses for the preservation or restoration of the site’s cultural heritage.
News of the project comes after Professor Mustafa Özer, the head of the Edirne Palace excavations, which have been working in the area since 2009, announced in November 2014 that cultural officials were working on a plan to bestow the Edirne Palace with “ancient site” status.
“The restoration of the palace kitchen [Matbah-i Amire] and the bath of Kum Qasr were finished this year. We have progressed on the restoration work of the Cihannüma Qasr, one of the notable parts of the palace. The building survey has been approved by the Edirne Cultural Heritage Preservation Board. The restitution and restoration projects are waiting to be approved. When the work is done, the whole palace will be restored and conserved,” Özer had said on Nov. 21, 2014.
Turkey is currently implementing an aggressive power plant construction policy that has caused controversy over costs.
Around 6,000 olive trees were cut down in one night on Nov. 7, 2014, for the construction of a power plant in the Aegean village of Soma, which was hit by Turkey’s worst-ever mining accident that killed 301 miners only six months before. The latest development in the case saw the Council of State dismiss the cabinet’s rapid expropriation decision in the village of Yırca on Dec. 26, marking a crucial ruling for the locals who lost thousands of olive trees because of the power plant project.

Şehzade Mosque, Istanbul

It is easy to get swept up in the regal environment here, but we must bear in mind that often these mosques, like churches, were built to show a family's dominance over an area.
