Amazing footage from Lapland (Finland) - Beyond the Arctic Circle

Here`s a short video of my trip to Finish Lapland in the arctic winter of 2017. It was taken in December among to shortest days of the year. There was about 4 hours of dim daylight, but the sun didn`t make it above the horizon. The temperatures dropped down to 30 degrees centigrades below freezing. All of my equipment froze after a short time.

The beauty of Northern Norway and Finland is just breathtaking. We started our journey at Lyngen Fjord and made our way towards Rovaniemi. There are tunnels in Norway to help get through the mountains. I was amazed at how fast the bus driver went on the snowy roads with semis and cars coming.

An Adventure beyond the Arctic Circle to Finnish Lapland

A compilation of clips from my yearly visits to part of my heritage in Finnish Lapland. Rather than taking the plane I took the overnight train from Helsinki to Kolari.

Nordic skiing videos were taken around Ylläs, a nordic/alpine skiing resort North of the Arctic Circle.

This week I began my adventure in Lapland/Rovaniemi, the northern part of Finland where all winter dreams are fulfilled. I went back in time to Christmas again, rode a reindeer and husky sled, went to the most epic tube slide, and ate the best grilled salmon that ever entered my mouth. Good times.

RVing in Finland: Road Trip to the Arctic Circle and Beyond - Traveling Robert

We depart from Helsinki aboard our Sunlight T69L. We stop by the historic city of Porvoo, visit a viewer nearby. Then continue to Varkaus to visit our host Petteri, and his wife. We also get to chat with his friend and partner Tomi. From there is it all the way north into the Lapland, past the Arctic Circle, eventually into Norway. We get to visit Santa Claus Village near Rovaniemi, right at the Arctic Circle and the town on Inari.

Rovaniemi: The Home of Father Christmas

Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland, in Northern Finland, and it is placed just a smidge over the line of the Arctic Polar Circle. Unsurprisingly, the climate is positively freezing during the winter months. The average temperature recorded in February 2018 was 13 degrees Celsius below zero. In the Fahrenheit world, this is more or less Alaska.

Arctic Night & Northern Lights over Frozen Finland - Timelapse Video

Have you ever wondered how does it feel to be in -40C ? Not so much fun, but if the surrounding is under heavy snow cover turning everything into real winter paradise in Santa's Land, then the experience is absolutely worth it. Frozen land of Arctic Lapland offers some great setting for capturing #NorthernLights - Aurora Borealis under snowy landscape, which is often difficult to find along the coast. Average temperatures around - 25C, with occasional -40C, dont make it particularly friendly experience, but the one which will always be treasured. I have purposely traveled there during full moon time, as I prefer the dark blue sky that moon light creates and when there was no aurora.. there was always moon to play with.
