Behind Bars 2: The World’s Toughest Prisons - Bogota, Colombia Part 2 (prison documentary)
The Carcel Distrital is located in one of the most dangerous quarters of Bogotá. Nearly 950 men and 50 women are imprisoned here. Most are still awaiting their final judgment. Their long wait may last for years: Justice in Colombia works slowly. Very slowly.
This leads to great frustration. Many frustrated people in one place will always lead to great problems.
Disputes, fights and riots are everyday occurrences.
The 170 staff members have their hands full with unannounced raids, inspections of the inmates and fights for power with the prisoners.
The prisoners fight back. They play by their own rules – illegal ones. Even in prison they continue to take drugs, carry weapons and continue their illegal transactions. One is always involved: the boss of the gang! He has people around him to do his jobs, such as acquiring drugs and weapons.
If caught, they will be in trouble; the sanctions are solitary confinement, extension of the sentence or visiting bans.
Support and help from family is important for the inmates. On visiting days, they have two hours to pretend everything is ok, hold their children and their loved ones. After precisely two hours, they have to say farewell, not knowing when they will meet gain.
The bleak life in prison continues with its daily fights.
All inmates share one thing: They want out as quickly as they can, and never return behind bars! But they must fight for that: against the slow course of justice and against their criminal selves.

Colombia: The long road to peace after the civil war | DW Documentary
Is Colombia really at peace? Even three years after the peace treaty, there is no clear answer. The documentary charts the ongoing conflict between the FARC guerillas and government, which is still fueled by war and social inequality.
Bogotá, 2016: the year that will go down in Colombian history books. After some five decades of civil war, the Marxist FARC guerrillas and the government signed a historic peace agreement before eyes of the world. It could have ended not only the armed conflict, but also the yawning gap between rich and poor in Colombia. A nationwide referendum at the beginning of October 2016 was supposed to give the government democratic legitimacy for the move and approval was considered certain. But then the unbelievable happened: The Colombian population rejected the agreement with the FARC rebels by a wafer-thin majority. It was a huge shock for the South American country, where the civil war had cost at least 220,000 lives and made six million people homeless. After nationwide student demonstrations, a new, revised peace treaty was finally signed in November 2016. Filmmaker Uli Stelzner followed the dramatic events of 2016 and the difficult process of implementing the agreement. Colombia may officially be at peace, but the country still knows no rest.
