The ecofriendly design consists of two buildings adjoined by a breezeway. Earthy 21 inch thick walls provide superior insulation qualities - ideal for manufacturing constant barrel room temperatures and for keeping us cool in our desert heat. The buildings are beautiful and very unique.
The Orofino vineyard was first planted in 1989 making these vines some of the oldest in the valley. It still has some original blocks including Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Riesling and Muscat. Replacement blocks include some Merlot (1999), Pinot Noir (2002 and 2008), and Petit Verdot (2010). Vines are grown in sandy loam with no rocks found for at least 2 feet. After that it is all river rock and gravel. The bench is prime agricultural land and has a proven track record for growing premium grapes.

History and Variety of Wine in BC (pt 1) (made with Spreaker)
Source:
Do you know the history behind the variety of wines of British Columbia? Would you like to make better choices about buying wine? If you aren't sure about the information beyond what's on the wine bottle's label then you could be spending money on the wrong blends.
British Columbia offers wine from five primary growing regions, each just half a day's car ride from Vancouver. Are you aware of which wines come from what areas and the history behind the different ones?
If you're interested in learning more about wines of British Columbia then you'll want to invest 20 minutes to listen to this edition of From the Vine to the Wine where your host Angel Burch interviews Matt Brzovic, a local wine expert with a decade of industry experience.
Wine is nothing new to Canada, despite the fact that it lies a bit north. Wines of BC* says some wineries can use cooler weather to their advantage. This interview talks about the early history of wines in British Columbia, along with the different varieties grown here.
The History Behind Wines of British Columbia
The episode kicks off with Matt telling the early history of wines made from vineyards in the Western region of Canada. You might be surprised at how far back the history actually goes.
Matt also explains who these early winemakers were, including the Father of the BC wine industry, and how they chose where to plant the first known vineyards in British Columbia.
If you take time to learn the history of wines in British Columbia, then it may change how you select wines, whether for dinner at home or a special occasion.
Prohibition and the BC Wine Industry
The Matt segues into the era of prohibition, and its part in the history of wines of British Columbia. During the interview he also answers these questions:
- What was the true start of the BC wine industry?
- How did fruit wines affect the industry of wine in BC?
- Why does Okanagan have such a wide variety of grapes?
Now ask yourself these two questions: Am I able to select BC wines based on their history? Is my knowledge of BC wines enough to offer advice to others? If you answered No to either or both of these questions, then it's time to listen to this entire episode.
BC Wines in the Late 20th Century
Next Matt takes listeners into the 1980s, talking about the important people who made a difference in British Columbia Wines, and some of the major events that also affected the industry.
A lot of people do not realize just how many wineries exist in British Columbia. Matt shares recommendations for what BC wineries he suggests you visit.
Visiting a winery makes a great day trip, or even just an afternoon tasting. What's preventing you from acting on the suggestions of this expert on British Columbia wines?
The episode wraps up with Matt sharing some final thoughts, as well as a quick review of the Wines of the Week.
Are You Ready to Brush Up on History of BC Wines?
Do you want to explore BC's history through wine knowledge? Are you ready to explore wineries close to Vancouver? After you listen to the podcast, share your questions and wine-related experience below. We'd love to discuss them with you.

ASTRONAUT:
Accessing disconnect. Enable on. Copy that E.L. Com. All systems are go for entry, decent, and landing. Stand by. Stand by.
ASTRONAUT:
We are looking fine, flight. Data is good.
NARRATOR:
At the dawn of the 21st Century, space agencies in Europe and
America began making plans to land the first humans on Mars.
But manned missions to the red planet have been proposed before.
For some, Mars holds the answers to mankind’s future in space.
Others say Mars is too far, too dangerous and too expensive for
humans to explore.
And in a world torn by troubles, some say there is no need or will
for mankind to reach into space anymore.
More than 30 years after the last Apollo astronaut walked on the
moon, the American-manned space program seems to have lost its
way, unable to reach beyond even low-earth orbit.
DR. ROBERT ZUBRIN:
We’ve got a problem, NASA has been literally going around in
circles with the space program for the past 30 years.
NARRATOR:
Astronautically engineer, Dr. Robert Zubrin, has been arguing for
years that sending humans to Mars is the mission the space
program needs.
ZUBRIN:
It’s time that we set goals for NASA that were worthy of the risks
of the human space flight. Mars is the next logical step in our space
program image. It’s the challenge that’s been staring us in the face
for the past 30 years. It’s the planet that’s most like the earth, it’s
the planet that has on it the resources needed to support life and
therefore some day technological civilization. It’s the planet that
will provide us with the answer as to whether life is prevalent in
the universe or exclusive to the earth.
And it’s the planet that will give us the critical tests as to whether
humanity, can breakout out of the planet of our birth and become a
space-faring species.
NARRATOR:
In the early 1990s, Zubrin was the head of the Mars Direct
program at Martin Marietta Astronautics. His team developed a
mission to Mars that could be done at the fraction of Nasa’s
projected costs.
Using only existing technology Zubrin argues that the first steps on
Martian soil could be made within 10 years.
ZUBRIN:
There is absolutely nothing in this that is beyond our technology.
DR. EDWARD WEILER:
We are not ready to send humans to Mars right now. We don’t
know how to keep them alive. There are people out there who say
we can go to Mars tomorrow. One of my requirements, one of
NASA’s requirements is that if we send humans to Mars we bring
them back alive.
NARRATOR:
For the past 15-years Zubrin and his colleagues have waged a
campaign to convince society and the political class that humans
on Mars should be the goal for NASA now.
This is the story of our cold neighboring planet and the debate over
whether man’s fate it tied to the red world. It’s the story of an
engineer’s journey - and the battle of ideas over which direction in
space will truly benefit mankind.
ZUBRIN:
We’re at a crossroads today. We either muster the courage to go or
we risk the possibility of stagnation and decay.

Globe Trekker Series 15 - Eastern Canada Trailer
Interested in more information? Follow this link to find out everything you need to know!
In this show Zoe D’Amato, native of Nova Scotia uncovers hidden gems about a country she thought she had covered! Her journey through Eastern Canada starts at Cape Spear, the eastern most point of the North American continent. After exploring nearby St John’s, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador Zoe takes to the water and her boat is immediately surrounded by Hump Back whales. Back on dry land she has dinner with two men who have their own stories to tell about one of the world’s worst maritime disasters: the sinking of the Titanic.
Determined to find out more about the disaster she travels to Halifax, Nova Scotia where she meets an expert on the subject and visits the cemetery where many of the Titanic’s victims are buried. Continuing the theme Zoe checks out a haunted restaurant in the town, which used to be a funeral parlour, where ghostly going’s on are still reported! Zoe then takes a drive 300km north to Cape Breton Island on the northern tip of Nova Scotia, or “New Scotland”, to discover the thriving Gaelic culture. She is helped in this task by a whiskey-loving distillery manager and a whole bunch of Gaelic speaking Ceilidh-dancing locals. To blow away the cobwebs, the next day Zoe treks one of the many breath-taking walking trails in the region.
Next, it’s a ferry journey to Prince Edward Island, where using only peddle-power, Zoe zigzag’s across the Island learning about the local passion for a form of horse racing called ‘Harness racing’, learns how to dig for massive bar clams and cooks them up on the beach, discovering just why Anne of Green Gables which was set on the Island is so popular in Japan, strange but true!
Leaving Prince Edward Island via the 8 mile long Confederation Bridge, Zoe’s next port of call is New Brunswick. Here she takes to the sea once more, well twice more actually, firstly to kayak amongst the rocks on a beach which has one of the highest tides in the world, a whopping 52 feet! And secondly to fish for lobsters and then be taught how to eat them the local way, i.e. not getting covered from head to foot in lobster juice.
From here Zoe takes a flight inland to the historical city of Quebec. She arrives just in time for the New France Festival which celebrates the arrival of the European settlers into the region. Walking the streets of this beautiful city, Zoe unearths the bloody history of the battles that were fought here between the English and the French whose influence is still so strong, with 90% of the population speaking French as a first language. Zoe then discovers an even older local culture as she visits Wendake, a Huron-Wendat first nations reserve 15 km outside Quebec city which has a couple of surprises in store. For Zoe, the highlight of this flying visit to Quebec comes when she is invited to join in rehearsals by Cirque de Soleil, the unique circus troop who thrill audiences around the world with their daring do and are based here in Quebec. This part of Zoe’s adventure ends as she watches her new found friends entertain at that evening’s performance.
The last leg of the journey sees Zoe fly to Toronto, the capital of Ontario where she tries her hand at the extreme sport of walking around the outside of the continent’s highest structure, nearly 1200ft up, with no hand rail! Earning a well-deserved rest, she chills with Lifeguards on the beach, surprising in itself, as Toronto is hundreds of miles inland. From here it’s a short drive down the road taking in the engineering marvel that is the St Lawrence Seaway, finishing her voyage of self-discovery overlooking the Majestic Niagara Falls.

Twenty Valley, Niagara Icewine Festival 2010 The Wine Ladies TV
Twenty Valleys Winter WineFest adds some sparkle to a winter favourite.
There is a new reason to venture out on a chilly January weekend this year.29 reasons, in fact. Visitors to the NEW Winter WineFest will be able to sample over 50 wines from 29 area wineries, and this year icewine will share centre stage with some of Ontarios best sparkling and premium VQA wines.
The not just icewine festival which will be hosted in Jordan Village January 16 and 17th will allow wine enthusiasts to sip and savour from a list of specialty and reserve wines not offered at any other wine festival.
The shift away from the traditional Icewine Festival was one of the first changes implemented by the Twenty Valley Tourism Association when they took over the management of the event this November. The Jordan Ice Bar has been very successful, but we wanted to create something that is distinctly Twenty Valley an event that better showcases the variety of premium wines available here, says Dori Andrewes, Event Manager for the Twenty Valley Tourism Association. Many of our most celebrated and popular wineries dont offer icewine and werent able to be a part of past events. It makes sense to put our best wines on display, and to highlight the range of talent in Twenty Valley.
