Thousand Buddha Caves at Dunhuang in a Gobi Sandstorm!

On my trip retracing the footsteps of Marco Polo along the Silk Road in China, one of the highlights of the trip was my visit to the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, China. One of the World Heritage Sites, the Buddhist caves at Mogao are the most spectacular display of Buddhist cliff temples in the world.

I arrived in a full on Gobi Desert sandstorm, and battled the sand until it died down a few hours later. Dunhuang is located on the edge of the Gobi Desert, with the Taklamakan Desert on the other side. Dunhuang is truly an oasis in the middle of nowhere. This fact gave the Chinese city, once an independent kingdom, such importance as a stop on the Silk Road.

With nearly 500 caves and cells, some of them 1,000 years old, this cave complex is insanely beautiful. Getting there is not complicated, just a quick taxi ride from downtown Dunhuang, in Gansu Province, northwestern China.

The cave complex is highly secured due to its importance to China's heritage. I'm a still photography, and taking photos inside the caves is strictly prohibited. Being a photography expedition, I considered skipping this site, but the historical importance for me was more important than taking photos inside.

A trip to the 1000 Buddha caves tucked away in a canyon near Turpan, Xinjiang.. Although to be perfectly honest I was more interested and in the 'Flaming Mountains' which made for incredible scenery!

Matisi is located on the west bank of the Mati (Horse's Hoof) River in the Sunan Yugur Autonomous County at the foot of the Qilain Mountains some 65 kilometers south of the city of Zhangye. Legend has it that God Erlang stopped to relax his horse here when he was pursuing the fleeing sun. To remember the god, the locals built a temple here and so named it because the god's horse had left foofprints on the riverbank.

Matisi is a complex of grottoes. It consists of the Asvajit Cave Temple, the Universal Light Caves, the Thousand-Buddha Caves, the Golden Pagoda Caves, and the Upper, Middle, and Lower Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) Caves. Matisi is built within a high cliff face and accessible only via an amazing passageway through the caves.

아스타나 고분군 阿斯塔纳古墓群


아스타나는 위구르어로 ‘수도’를 뜻하는 말로 고창 고성을 가리킨다.

이곳에서는 4~7세기의 고창국과 당나라 무덤 456기가 발견됐다.

무덤에서 출토된 문서 3천여 건은 ‘투루판 문서’라고 불리며 그 가치가 어마어마하다.

당시의 정치, 경제, 군사, 일상생활은 물론 불교와 마니교, 경교에 관한 방대한 정보가

담겨 있다. 무덤의 주인은 대부분 한족으로 계층은 귀족부터 평민까지 다양하다.

관광객에게 공개하는 무덤의 계단을 따라 내려가면 1,300년 된 미라가 안치돼 있다.

미라의 훼손을 막기 위해서 사진 촬영은 금지한다. 무덤군에서 발굴된 유물은

우루무치 박물관과 해외 박물관에 전시되고 있어서, 정작 이곳에는 볼거리가 별로 없다.

그리고 고분 내부는 촬영 금지 되어 소개 자료도 부족함.


훠옌산 火焰山

투루판의 별칭인 ‘화주(火州, 불의 땅)’를 닮은 산이다. 주름이 자글자글한 붉은 사암 지대로, 풀 한 포기 자라지 않는 산이

동서 방향으로 100km나 펼쳐진다.

한여름 햇볕이 작열하는 오후 2~3시에 방문하면 붉은 산이 마치 이글이글 불타는 것처럼 보여서 훠옌 산,

즉 ‘화염산’이라고 부른다.

훠옌 산은 소설 서유기의 배경으로도 유명하다. 삼장 법사와 세 제자가 인도로 가던 중 불타오르는 산에 당도하여

우마왕과 격전을 펼쳤다는 장소가 바로 여기다. 손오공과 저팔계, 사오정 동상이 기념비처럼 세워져 있고,

세계에서 가장 큰 온도계도 있다. 한여름에는 지표면이 달궈져 온도계가 50℃를 넘는 날이 허다하다.

다만 온도계가 너무 거대해서 화염산의 장관을 가리는 건 아쉽다.


베제클리크 천불동 柏孜克里克千佛洞(신장에서 가장 큰 불교 석불)

투루판은 실크로드에서 우전국(于阗国, 지금의 호탄), 구자국(龟兹国, 지금의 쿠처)과

더불어 불교 문화가 활짝 꽃피웠던 곳이다.

그 증거가 바로 베제클리크 천불동이다. 훠옌 산 아래 목두구(木头沟, 무터우거우) 계곡

절벽을 따라 ‘신장에서 가장 큰 불교 석굴’이 조성됐다.

6세기부터 13세기 말 고창 회골 왕국이 멸망하기 전까지 꾸준히 조성하여 총 83개에

달했으며, 현존하는 석굴은 57개이다.
