Bhakta Kannappa Temple is on the hill top near and at a walkable distance from the main Sri kalahasti temple.
About Bhakta Kannapp :
Kannappa Nayanar is also known as Thinnappan, Tinnappan, Thinnan, Kannappan, Kannappa Nayanar or Nayanmar, Kannan, Bhakta Kannappan and Dheeran. He was born in a hunting family in Uduppoor (modern Vutukuru) near Sri Kalahasti, in present-day Utukkuru, Rajampet Andhra Pradesh. He was named Thinnan or Dheeran by his parents.
Thinnan was a staunch devotee of the Vayu linga of SriKalahasti which he found in the forest while hunting. Being a hunter, he did not know how to properly worship Lord Shiva. It is said that he poured water from his mouth on the Shiva lingam which he brought from the nearby river Swarnamukhi. He also offered the Lord whatever animal he hunted, including swine flesh. But the Lord accepted his offerings since Thinnan was pure at heart and his devotion was true. Once, Lord Shiva tested the unshakable devotion of Thinnan. With his divine power, He created a tremor and the roof-tops of the temple began to fall. All the sages ran away from the scene except for Thinnan who covered the linga with his body to prevent it from any damage. Hence he was named thereafter as Dheeran.
Thinnan noticed that one of the eyes of the Shiva linga was oozing blood and tears. Sensing that the Lord's eye had been injured, Dheeran proceeded to pluck his one eye out with one of his arrows and placed it in the spot of the bleeding eye of the Shiva linga. This stopped the bleeding in that eye of the linga. But to complicate matters further, he noticed that the other eye of the linga has also started oozing blood. So Thinnan thought that if he were to pluck his other eye too, he would become blind to exactly know the spot where he has to place his own second eye over the bleeding second eye of the lingam. So he placed his great toe on the linga to mark the spot of the bleeding second eye and proceeded to pluck out his other and only eye. Moved by his extreme devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before Thinnan and restored both his eyes. He made Thinnan as one of the Nayanmars and he was called as Kannappan or Kannappa Nayanar.
When Arjuna was meditating on Lord Shiva for Pasupathastra, to test him Lord Shiva entered that forest as an animal hunter and due to word war between Lord Shiva and Arjuna, a battle took place between both and finally impressed by Arjuna's efforts, Lord Shiva gave him the Pasupathasthra. However, for not recognizing Lord Shiva, he is born again as a devotee in the Kali Yuga as Kannappa Nayanar and finally got liberation.
Distance from Sri Kalahasti to Tirupathi is just 37 kms.

LORD SHIVA*Shivaaiya*Vayu linga of SRIKALHASTI*Eyes of Kannappa Nayanar*
Sri Kalahastiswara Mahatyam (Telugu: శ్రీ కాళహస్తీశ్వర మహత్యం) is a 1954 Telugu film directed by H. L. N. Simha starring Kannada Kantheerava Rajkumar.
The movie is a remake of Bedara Kannappa, a popular Kannada film which also stars Rajkumar in the lead role.
Release date(s) 7 May 1954
The song 'Shivappa Kayo Tande' (literally Shiva, protect me oh father) is very popular and is sung even today in orchestras.
Bhakta Kannappa (English title: Devotee Kannappa) is a 1976 Telugu film directed by Bapu. It is based on the life of Shaiva devotee, Kannappa Nayanar.
Kannappa stopped by Shiva as he tries to remove his second eye.
Moved by his extreme devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before Thinnan and restored both his eyes. He made Thinnan as one of the Nayanmars and he was called as Kannappan or Kannappa Nayanar.
Sri Kalahasti temple, situated 36 km away from Tirupati is famous for its Vayu linga, one of the Panchabhoota Sthalams, representing wind.
Srikalahasti Temple is located in the town of Srikalahasti, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is one of the most famous Shiva temples in South India, and is said to be the site where Kannappa was ready to offer both his eyes to cover blood flowing from the Siva linga before the Lord Siva stopped him and granted him mukti.
The temple is also associated with Rahu and Kethu (of the nine grahams or celestial bodies in the Indian astrological scheme). The river Suvarnamukhi takes the northerly course at Sri Kalahasthi almost washing the west wall of the famous temple . Inside this very large temple, situated between two steep hills Sripuram and Mummidi-cholapuram, is the Sivalinga set to represent the element of Vayu.
This temple is considered as the Kailash of the South or Dakshin Kailash. Saivaite saints of the first century sang about this temple.
The linga is white and is considered Swayambhu, or self-manifested.
Prominent among legends connected to the glory of the temple, is of Parvati who was cursed by Lord Shiva to discard her heavenly body and assume the human form. To get rid off the above curse Parvati did a long penance here.
Pleased with her deep devotion Lord Shiva again restored her body and initiated various mantras including the Panchakshari. Parvati came to be known as Shiva-Gnanam Gnana Prasunamba or Gnana Prasunambika Devi.
The RajaGopuram of SriKalahasti Temple collapsed on 26 May 2010 as feared. Vibrations from borewell digging in the vicinity directly contributed to the collapse. The digging goes on up to a depth of 500–600 ft, a geologist reasoned.
Archaeologists and experts, looking into the reasons of the imposing structure crashing down, found that it stood on a foundation that had a depth of one-and-a-half feet.
TIRUPATI: As feared, the 136-foot ‘rajagopuram' of the Srikalahasti temple, which has been in a precarious condition due to a deep fissure along its face, crashed on Wednesday with a huge thud.
Sources said that though a thin crack on the gopuram had been existing for the last 25-30 years and started deepening in recent times, after the recent cyclone ‘Laila'.

LORD SHIVA BEST SONG -shivaaiya- SRIKALHASTI.avi
This is a story about a devotee called Thinnan (Kannappan).
Thinnan wanted to offer food and water to Lord Siva. But the only
water he had was his saliva and the food was the animal flesh. Next
day, the priest on his arrival was shocked to find meat scattered
over the Lingam and he cursed the person who did this defilement. He
cleaned the Lingam, went to take bath and came back. He worshipped
the Lord in his usual way and went home. After he left, Thinnan
worshipped the Lord again in his way.
The priest hid himself to find the ` culprit.' He saw Thinnan doing
his usual worship with great devotion. In order to show the depth of
Thinnan's worship to the priest, the Lord made the blood come out of
His eye. As Thinnan could not bear the sight of his beloved Lord, he
pulled out one of his eyes and put it in Siva's image. Now the
bleeding started from the other eye of the Lord's image. After
losing his one eye Thinnan could see only with the other eye and so
he put his left leg to mark the place of the eye in the image and
then was to pull out his second eye as well to put it in place of
the bleeding eye of the Lord. Suddenly, he heard the Lord's voice
calling him to stop. And then as the Lord appeared himself, both the
priest and Thinnan fell at His feet. The Lord blessed them and
restored the eye of Thinnan.
Thinnan came to be known as Kannappan, which means one who gave his
eyes to the Lord....
This is a very strange story and shows us that no matter how u worship lord or the method ..... he (lord) listens to u...... he will help u in time to time.....he will always be there for u..... THIS SONG IS IN KANNADA.
MAY LORD BLESS U ALL.....
OM NAMAHA SHIVAYA........
