City of temples - Bhubaneshwar
Bhubaneswar also spelt Bhubaneshwar is the capital of the Indian state of Odisha, formerly known as Orissa. The city has a history of over 3,000 years starting with the Mahamegha-bahana Chedi dynasty (around 2nd century BCE) which had its capital at Sisupalgarh, nearby. Bhubaneswar, derived its name from Tribhubaneswar, which literally means the Lord (Eeswar) of the Three World (Tribhuban), which refers to Shiva. Bhubaneswar has been known by names such as Toshali, Kalinga Nagari, Nagar Kalinga, Ekamra Kanan, Ekamra Kshetra and Mandira Malini Nagari. It is the largest city in Odisha and is a centre of economic and religious importance in Eastern India.
With many Hindu temples, which span the entire spectrum of Kalinga architecture, Bhubaneswar is often referred to as a Temple City of India and together with Puri and Konark it forms the Swarna Tribhuja one of eastern India's most visited destinations.
Bhubaneswar replaced Cuttack as the capital in 1948, the year after India gained its independence from Britain. The modern city was designed by the German architect Otto Königsberger in 1946. Along with Jamshedpur and Chandigarh, it was one of modern India's first planned cities. Bhubaneswar and Cuttack are often referred to as the twin-cities of Odisha. The metropolitan area formed by the two cities had a population of 1.4 million in 2011. Bhubaneswar is categorized as a Tier-2 city. An emerging Information Technology and education hub, Bhubaneswar is one of country's fastest developing cities.

Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha is widely known as the 'Temple City of India' on account of its large number of temples that had been built between 7th and 13th centuries AD. They represent the Kalinga School of Temple Architecture. The seven best known temples in Bhubaneswar built in the chronological order are the Parasurameswar, the Vaital Deula, the Mukteswara, the Rajarani, The Brahmeswara, the Lingaraj and the Ananta Vasudeva. Except the last all others are Shiva Temples. Bhubaneswar along with Puri and Konark form the golden triangle of Eastern India.

Prominent landmark of Bhubaneswar city - Muktesvara deula
View of the garden in front of the Muktesvara deula in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Also one can see the architectural style and decorative motifs of the temple.
Muktesvara deula is a 10th-century Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva located in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, India. The temple dates back to 970 CE and is a monument of importance in the study of the development of Hindu temples in Odisha. The stylistic development the Mukteswar marks the culmination of all earlier developments, and initiates a period of experiment which continues for an entire century, as seen in such temples as the Rajarani Temple and Lingaraj temple, both located in Bhubaneswar.
The Mukteswar Temple is found to be the earliest work from the Somvamsi period. Most scholars believe the temple is the successor to Parsurameswar Temple and built earlier to the Brahmeswara Temple (1060 CE). Percy Brown puts the date of construction of the temple to 950 CE. The presence of torana, which is not part of any other temple in the region makes this temple unique and some of the representations indicate the builders were starters of a new culture. The Somavamsi king Yayati I contributed to the building of the temple.
