Bhoj Wetland Birding Paradise
Bhopal's Bada Talab, also called the Upper Lake is a human-made reservoir. It was built by Raja Bhoj in the 11th century by the construction of an earthen dam across the Kolans River. A twin lake—Chota Talab or the Lower Lake was also constructed nearly 200 years ago, largely from leakage from the Upper. These lakes are surrounded by the city of Bhopal. The Upper Lake is very rich in biodiversity, particularly for macrophytes, phytoplankton, zooplankton, natural and cultured fish species, resident and migratory birds, insects, reptiles and amphibians. A number of bird species are sighted along this lake. Bhoj Wetland, named after Raja Bhoj, is a Ramsar site and a wetland of international importance.

Bhopal City:Population:2 million
Bhopal is the capital of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and the administrative headquarters of Bhopal district and Bhopal division. The city was the capital of the former Bhopal State. Bhopal is known as the City of Lakes for its various natural as well as artificial lakes and is also one of the greenest cities in India. It is the 17th largest city in the country and 131st in the world.
A Y-class city, Bhopal houses various institutions and installations of national importance, including ISRO's Master Control Facility and BHEL. Bhopal is home to the largest number of Institutes of National Importance in India, namely IISER, MANIT, SPA, AIIMS and NLIU.
The city attracted international attention in December 1984 after the Bhopal disaster, when a Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide manufacturing plant (now owned by Dow Chemical Company) leaked a mixture of deadly gases composed mainly of methyl isocyanate, leading to one of the worst industrial disasters in the world's history. The Bhopal disaster continues to be a part of the socio-political debate and a logistical challenge for the people of Bhopal.
Geography
Bhopal has an average elevation of 500 metres (1401 ft). Bhopal is located in the central part of India, and is just north of the upper limit of the Vindhya mountain ranges. Located on the Malwa plateau, it is higher than the north Indian plains and the land rises towards the Vindhya Range to the south. The city has uneven elevation and has small hills within its boundaries. The prominent hills in Bhopal are Idgah hills and Shyamala hills in the northern region, Katara hills in southern region. City's geography has in it two lakes namely upper lake and lower lake.
Bhopal
It has two big lakes, collectively known as the Bhoj Wetland. These lakes are the Upper Lake (now renamed to Bhojtal) and the Lower Lake. Locally these are known as the Bada Talab (literally, big lake) and Chota Talab (literally, small lake) respectively. The Upper Lake drains into the Kolar River. The Van Vihar National Park is a national park situated besides the Upper Lake.
Bhopal disaster
On 3 December 1984, a Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in Bhopal leaked around 32 tons of toxic gases, including methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas which led to the worst industrial disaster to date. The official death toll was initially recorded around 4,000. A Madhya Pradesh government report stated 3,787 deaths, while other estimates state the fatalities were significantly higher (16,000) from the accident and the medical complications caused by the accident in the weeks and years that followed. The higher estimates have been challenged. The impact of the disaster continues to this day in terms of psychological and neurological disabilities, blindness, skin, vision, breathing, and birth disorders. The soil and ground water near the factory site have been contaminated by the toxic wastes. The Bhopal disaster continues to be the part of the socio-political debate; the cleanup of environmental contamination and rehabilitation of those affected continues to challenge the people of Bhopal.

Bhojtal - built to cure skin disease by King Bhoj
Bhojtal, formerly known as Upper Lake is a large lake which lies on the Western side of the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal. It is a major source of drinking water for the residents of the city, serving around 40% of the residents with nearly 30 million imperial gallons (140,000 m3) of water per day. Bada talaab, along with the nearby Chhota Talaab, meaning small lake in Hindi, constitute Bhoj Wetland, which is now a Ramsar site.
Bhojtal is said to have been built by the Parmara Raja Bhoj during his tenure as a king of Malwa (1005--1055). He is also said to have established the city of Bhopal (also named after him, then as Bhojpal) to secure the eastern frontier of his kingdom. There is a legend why the built the lake. Once king Bhoj suffered from skin disease and all Vaidyas (Doctor in English) failed to cure him. Then, one day a saint told the king to build a tank to combine 365 tributaries and then have a bath in it to wipe out the skin disease. Bhoj called upon his engineers to build up a huge tank. They spotted a place near river Betwa, which was 32 km away from Bhopal. It was found that it has only 359 tributaries. A Gond Commander Kalia fulfilled this shortage. He then gave the address of an invisible river. After merging the tributaries of this river the number 365 was completed.
The lake was created by constructing an earthen dam across the Kolans River. An eleven gate dam called the Bhadbhada dam was constructed at Bhadbhada in 1965 at the southeast corner of the Lake, and now controls the outflow to the river Kaliasote.
The lake was known as the Upper Lake or Bada Talab (Big Pond) until March 2011, when the BJP-led state government renamed it to Bhojtaal. A huge statue of Raja Bhoj was also installed on a pillar on one corner of the lake.

Many more were rendered sick and have been facing chronic health problems such as psychological and neurological disabilities, blindness, skin, vision and breathing disorders and the new born children still suffer from serious birth defects, even after generations. The soil and ground water near the factory site has been contaminated by the toxic wastes and other chemicals still leaking out from the factory. The Indian government, however, maintains that no such pollution has taken place or that any such toxins are even present at the site. Since then, Bhopal has been a center of protests and campaigns which have been joined by people from across the globe.

Let us save Upper Lake of Bhopal
The rapidly shrinking Bada Talab of Bhopal (now called Bhoj Tal). Mark the concrete reinforcement on the left-this wall was constructed for the purpose of lake conservation with the help of Japanese funds under the ambitious Bhoj Wetland project. Despite the conservation efforts, the fact remains that the lake is now threatened like never before by reckless development activities and massive destruction of forests in the catchment of the Kolans River in neighbouring Sehore district. This river is now almost dry due to massive destruction of the the green cover under the knowledge and supervision of those heading successive governments.

The Bhoj Wetland consists of two lakes located in the city of Bhopal, the capital of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The two lakes are the Bhojtal (Upper Lake) & the Lower Lake, which lie to the west of the city center. The Bhojtal has an area of 31 km², and drains a catchment or watershed of 361 km². The watershed of the Bhojtal is mostly rural, with some urbanized areas around its eastern end. The lower lake has an area of 1.29 km². Its catchment is 9.6 km² and is mostly urbanized; the Lower Lake also receives subsurface seepage from the Bhojtal.
The Bhojtal was created by Paramara Raja Bhoj (1005-1055), ruler of Malwa. He established Bhopal (also named after him) to secure the eastern frontier of his kingdom. The lake was created by constructing an earthen dam across the Kolans River. The Kolans was formerly a tributary of the Halali River; with the creation of the Bhojtal and a diversion channel, the upper reach of the Kolans River and the Bhojtal now drain into the Kaliasot River. Bhadbhada dam was constructed in 1965 at the southeast corner of the Bhojtal; it now controls the outflow to the Kaliasot river.
The Lower Lake was created in 1794 by Nawab Chhote Khan, Minister of Nawab Hayath Mohammad Khan, to beautify the city. It is also contained behind an earthen dam, and drains into the Halali River via the lower reach of the Kolans River, presently known as the Patra Drain. Both the Kaliasot and Halali Rivers are tributaries of the Betwa River.
The lakes are home to a diverse flora and fauna, including many waterbirds. They have been designated a wetland of international importance under the international Ramsar Convention since August 2002.
Water pollution is a major environmental issue in India. The largest source of water pollution in India is untreated sewage.[1] Other sources of pollution include agricultural runoff and unregulated small scale industry. Most rivers, lakes and surface water in India are polluted.[2][3]
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater). This form of environmental degradation occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds.
Water pollution affects the entire biosphere of plants and organisms living in these water bodies, as well as organisms and plants that might be exposed to the water. In almost all cases the effect is damaging not only to individual species and populations, but also to the natural biological communities.
Untreated sewage
The majority of the government-owned sewage treatment plants remain closed most of the time due to improper design or poor maintenance or lack of reliable electricity supply to operate the plants, together with absentee employees and poor management. The waste water generated in these areas normally percolates into the soil or evaporates. The uncollected wastes accumulate in the urban areas causing unhygienic conditions and releasing pollutants that leach into surface and groundwaters.[1]
Sewage discharged from cities, towns and some villages is the predominant cause of water pollution in India.[1] Investment is needed to bridge the gap between sewage India generates and its treatment capacity of sewage per day.[6] Major cities of India produce 38,354 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage, but the urban sewage treatment capacity is only 11,786 MLD.[7] A large number of Indian rivers are severely polluted as a result of discharge of domestic sewage.
The scientific analysis of water samples from 1995 to 2008 indicates that the organic and bacterial contamination is severe in water bodies of India. This is mainly due to discharge of domestic waste water in untreated form, mostly from the urban centres of India.
Coliform levels
Rivers Yamuna, Ganga, Gomti, Ghaghara River, Chambal, Mahi, Vardha are amongst the other most coliform polluted water bodies in India. use disease outbreak from contaminated-water in agriculture.[9][10]
Specific rivers
The Ganges

• Buddha Nullah, a seasonal water stream, which runs through the Malwa region
• The Mithi River, which flows through the city of Mumbai, is heavily polluted[20]

Water birds of Bhopal
Water birds of Bhopal come to Delhi--The Hindu, Friday, Jul 28, 2006
Staff Reporter
A 28-minute documentary screened at India International Centre `The aim is to create awareness about the urgent need to understand and conserve this habitat'
NEW DELHI: A 28-minute documentary on Water birds of Bhopal'' produced by Lalit Shastri, Principal Correspondent of The Hindu in Madhya Pradesh and Dr. Rajshri Shastri, Professor of Sociology, MLB College, Bhopal, was screened at India International Centre here on Thursday as part of the non-government organisation Toxics Link's lecture series on Environment and Public Health.
Speaking about the film, Mr. Shastri said the aim of the documentary was to highlight how the habitat of migratory birds coming to the water bodies in Bhopal was threatened by sewage, chemicals and other pollutants destroying their home. Wetlands are among the most delicately balanced and vital habitats. They indicate and maintain a healthy water table. We have studied 40 species of birds for the film and hope that the documentary would be used to create awareness about the urgent need to understand and conserve this habitat,'' added Mr. Shastri.
The screening was followed by a panel discussion on the subject. Principal Co-ordinator for Indian Cranes and Wetlands Working Group, K. S. Gopi Sundar, photographer and Head of Delhi Birds Club, Nikhil Devasar, and Director of Toxics Link Ravi Agarwal participated in the discussion.
Mr. Sundar said: Scientists and bird-watchers are busy unravelling the mysteries of these creatures even as their numbers dwindle. The film is an easy-to-follow learning tool that can be used to speak to people about conservation and awareness. Wetlands are the second fastest habitat that is being destroyed today.''
