Tiger’s Nest in Bhutan - Trekking to the SPECTACULAR Monastery on a Cliff! (Final Day in Bhutan)
Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan is one of the most famous attractions, and the beauty is mind-blowing!
►Subscribe for more videos:
On Day 19 of our food and travel trip to Bhutan, we dedicated the entire day to trekking to Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan (Paro Taktsang in Bhutanese Dzongkha), which sits literally on the edge of a cliff. The hike takes about 3 - 4 hours or so, and since I wanted to beat the main crowds, my wife and I left from the hotel quite early to get a head start. It worked out quite well, because we were some of the only people on the trail that early in the morning. The fresh air was amazing. We wound our way along the trail, and soon we could get amazing views of Tiger’s Nest hidden in the clouds and on the side of the cliff.
The trail, although steep, isn’t really dangerous in any parts, as long as you keep your eye on the trail and don’t try to get too close to the edge. At the top of Tiger’s Nest Monastery they don’t allow any photography, so you have to check in your bag. We walked around the monastery for a little while, ate some snacks, and then headed down.
Despite Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan being one of the most famous attractions and icons of Bhutan, it really is spectacular.

It’s typically recommended that you visit Tiger’s Nest at the end of your trip to Bhutan so that you acclimatize better to the elevation.
Gangtey Palace Hotel - After returning from Tiger’s Nest, we checked into the classic Gangtey Palace Hotel for our final night in Bhutan!

As a Wanderer for G Adventures I got the chance to travel around Bhutan to explore monasteries, fortresses, temples, the food, traditions, even the nightlife and with that develop a deeper understanding of the culture. In combination with a proper 4 day trekking adventure in the Himalayas along the Druk Path Bhutan simply blew me away.
With this video I give you an introduction to traveling and things to do in Bhutan, I explain why the Bhutan visa has such a high price tag and why it is only possible to explore the country on a tour. I take you with me on the demanding Druk Path trek and show you around all the major sights in Thimphu, Punakha and Paro including the hike up to the popular Tiger’s Nest monastery.

--About my Cooperation with G Adventures--
For many years I was searching for a suitable partner who offers tours in South America which align with my style of traveling as well as my values. After many meetings I’m glad I found this partner with G Adventures who offer many adventurous tour packages for travelers like me…but who also care about the environment and local communities in order to execute sustainable tourism. I forced this cooperation because I like the products and the philosophy of the company. Nevertheless all opinions, recommendations and views are my own.

Haa Valley - Adjoining the districts of Paro, Chhukha and Samtse, Haa valley is one of the most picturesque places in the Kingdom, spread over an area of 1706 sq. km.
Chele la (pass) at an elevation 13000 ft asl is considered to be one of the highest motorable passes in Bhutan. About an hour's drive from Paro as it passes through lush valleys, pine and rhododendron forest. The pass provides stunning views of the sacred mountain Jomolhari and Jichu Drake

In the High Himalayas, peaks such as 7,326m Jomolhari are popular trekking destinations. Paro Taktsang monastery (also known as Tiger’s Nest) clings to cliffs above the forested Paro Valley.
Paro Taktsang (Dzongkha: སྤ་གྲོ་སྟག་ཚང་, also known as the Taktsang Palphug Monastery and the Tiger's Nest),[1] is a prominent Himalayan Buddhist sacred site and the temple complex is located in the cliffside of the upper Paro valley in Bhutan.
A temple complex was first built in 1692, around the Taktsang Senge Samdup cave where Guru Padmasambhava is said to have meditated for three years, three months, three weeks, three days and three hours in the 8th century. Padmasambhava is credited with introducing Buddhism to Bhutan and is the tutelary deity of the country. Today, Paro Taktsang is the best known of the thirteen taktsang or tiger lair caves in which he meditated.
The temple devoted to Padmasambhava (also known as Gu-ru mTshan-brgyad Lhakhang, the Temple of the Guru with Eight Names) is an elegant structure built around the cave in 1692 by Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye; and has become the cultural icon of Bhutan.A popular festival, known as the Tsechu, held in honor of Padmasambhava, is celebrated in the Paro valley sometime during March or April.
Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, occupies a valley in the country’s western interior. In addition to being the government seat, the city is known for its Buddhist sites. The massive Tashichho Dzong is a fortified monastery and government palace with gold-leaf roofs. The Memorial Chorten, a whitewashed structure with a gold spire, is a revered Buddhist shrine dedicated to Bhutan’s third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.

HANAH Rituals: Joel Einhorn at the Tour of the Dragon in Bhutan
In our next HANAH Rituals episode, we go along for the journey as Joel heads back to the kingdom of Bhutan for his second time riding the Tour of the Dragon, deemed the world's toughest one-day mountain bike race.
Joel trained for several months prior to arriving in Bhutan for the race, which starts at 2:00 a.m. on the first Saturday in September. With thousands of miles of cycling prep under his belt, and the knowledge of what to expect from his first endeavor the previous year, there are still a lot of unknowns when riding a bike over four Himalayan mountain passes. Road slides, steep cliffs, deep mud, whipping winds, cold rain, steaming hot rivers valleys, and of course, countless rogue cows, dogs and dump trucks to dodge along the way.
Learn more about HANAH founder Joel Einhorn's time prepping in Bhutan for the world's toughest mountain bike race, the Tour of the Dragon here:

Bhutan 2018: Hike from Paro to Thimpu. Thank you Bhutan Swallowtail.
A short video shot on iPhone, detailing our adventures in Bhutan organised by the Bhutan Swallowtail tour company. The four-day hike from Paro to Thimpu was stunning, though very cold! March was probably a little too early in the year for it! Bhutan is an incredible country, highly recommend a visit.
