Bhutan Post Office and collection of Stamps in 1990's.
Bhutan Post takes care of the postal system of Bhutan and was created on 1 October 1996.
Bhutan has been a member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) since 1969 and in 1983 they joined the Asian-Pacific Postal Union.
The first post office was opened in Phuentsholing on 10 October 1962 and it kept on increasing and The latest figure for 2010 is 43 post offices (including the two General Post Offices in Phuentsholing and Thimphu) and 33 Community Mail Offices, the new name for agency port office.
These days, with the help of the internet, we don't see nearly as many people using the postal services much. Instead we are more comfortable communicating via emails or using other internet service providers.
The internet was introduced n Bhutan after 1998 and then postal system in Bhutan changed drastically.
There are pretty collections of stamps in the country. The animated version of stamp is quite adorable and it is 4 Ngultrum: This is 4 Rupess. The Bhutanese and Indian currencies are at par.
It is Ngultrum 140 for the Druk stamp in golden colour and one of the best stamps in the collection is with the 4th king's picture on it.

Punakha Dzong in Bhutan
The Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungtang Dewa chhenbi Phodrang (meaning the palace of great happiness or bliss[1][2]), is the administrative centre of Punakha District in Punakha, Bhutan. It is the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan.
Punakha Dzong was the administrative centre and the seat of the Government of Bhutan until 1955, when the capital was moved to Thimphu.
Dzong architecture is a distinctive type of fortress architecture found mainly in Bhutan and Tibet. The architecture is massive in style with towering exterior walls surrounding a complex of courtyards, temples, administrative offices, and monks' accommodation.
Punakha is around 70 Kms from Thimphu.
Special thanks to Namgay our driver who showed us amazing places in Thimphu and Punakha. He also charged reasonably without much bargaining whereas most of the other drivers that we met used to bargain a lot.
You can contact him to book his taxi for a day sight seeing in Thimphu or Punakha etc.

To visit Dochula and Punakha you have to get Route permit for Punakha from Immigration office in Thimphu.

Bhutanese PM Lotay Tshering also operates in hospital
Lotay Tshering is a Bhutanese doctor-turned-politician. Above all, he is the current Prime Minister of Bhutan in office since 7 November 2018. He is also the president of Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa since 14 May 2018.
Tshering was born on 10 May 1968 into a humble family. He hails from Dalukha village, Mewang gewog, Thimpu.
He received his early education from the Punakha High School in Sherubtse. He graduated from Mymensingh Medical College under the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh and received a degree of MBBS in 2001. He completed his post-graduation in surgery from the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka, Bangladesh. In 2007, he studied Urology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, United States under his World Health Organization fellowship. Upon his return to Bhutan, he was the only practicing trained urologist in his country. In 2010, he obtained a fellowship in Endourology at Singapore General Hospital, Singapore and Okayama University, Japan. He received a Master of Business Administration degree from University of Canberra, Australia in 2014.
Tshering is married to a Doctor. The couple has one daughter. During his tenure in Mongar Regional Referral Hospital, he adopted one girl and one boy.
Tshering served as a consultant surgeon in JDWNRH and Mongar Regional Referral Hospital, and was also served as a consultant urologist in JDWNRH for 11 years.
After the payment of about Nu. 6.2 million to the Royal Civil Service Commission, he resigned from the JDWNRH as a urologist to join politics in 2013.
Tshering contested the 2013 National Assembly Election but his party was knocked out in the primary round.
On 14 May 2018, Tshering received 1,155 votes and was elected as the president of the Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT) just five months before the Third National Assembly Election.
He was elected to the National Assembly of Bhutan as a candidate of DNT from South Thimphu constituency in 2018 Bhutanese National Assembly election. He received 3,662 votes, defeating Kinley Tshering, a candidate of DPT. His party won largest number of seats in the 2018 National Assembly Election, bringing Tshering to priemiership and Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa into government for the first time.
On 7 November 2018, he replaced Tshering Tobgay and was sworn in as 3rd democratically elected Prime Minister of Bhutan.
Narendra Modi with the Lotay Tshering, at Rashtrapati Bhavan, in New Delhi on December 28, 2018
On 27 December 2018, he arrived in India (three-day visit) in his first foreign trip after assuming the office.
Tshering announced his 10 cabinet ministers on 3 November 2018.
1991: He was awarded the Father William Mackey Gold Medal for academic excellence in Sherubtse.
2005: He was awarded the Unsung Hero of Compassion Award by 14th Dalai Lama.
2017: He was awarded the Order of the Beloved of the Thunder Dragon Medal (Druk Thuksey) by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck for his selfless and dedicated service to the Tsawa-Sum (our King, our country and our people).
2018: Royal Orange Scarf by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.
It’s Saturday in Bhutan and Lotay Tshering has just completed urinary bladder repair surgery on a patient at the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital.
But Tshering is no ordinary doctor. During the week, he also happens to be the prime minister in the Himalayan kingdom famous for measuring citizens’ Gross National Happiness.
“For me it’s a de-stresser,” said Tshering, who was elected prime minister of the nation of 750,000 people last year in only its third democratic election since the end of absolute monarchy in 2008.
“Some people play golf, some do archery, and I like to operate. I am just spending my weekends here,” the 50-year-old said.
At the hospital, Tshering’s patient, a 40-year-old man named Bumthap who underwent a five-hour bladder repair surgery, told AFP he was pleased with the results.
“Now that I have been operated on by the prime minister, who is considered one of the best doctors in the country, I feel more relieved,” he said.
No one at the hospital bats an eyelid as Tshering, wearing a faded lab coat and crocs, walks through the busy corridors. Nurses and hospital attendants continue with their jobs as normal.
The Buddhist kingdom is in many ways a case apart, benchmarking itself on happiness instead of economic growth.
The capital Thimphu has no traffic lights, the sale of tobacco is banned, and television was only allowed in 1999.
But the “Land of the Thunder Dragon” also has its problems, among them corruption, rural poverty, youth unemployment and criminal gangs.

INDIA TO BHUTAN CROSSING THE BORDER BY ROAD|THIMPHU SIGHTSEEING|THIMPHU CITY TOUR|#LetsRewind
INDIA TO BHUTAN|CROSSING THE BORDER BY ROAD|PHUENTSHOLING TO THIMPHU|THIMPHU SIGHTSEEING|THIMPHU CITY TOUR. (HOW TO TRAVEL BHUTAN BY ROAD FROM INDIA)
My journey started from Kolkata which is my home. From Sealdah station it was Kanchankanya Train which took me to Hasimara station the next morning.
Hasimara is a small station but my journey by road started from there.I booked a taxi or a rented car which drove me to Jaigaon which is the last Indian Border. Phuentsholing is the border town of Bhutan. My hotel (The Park, Bhutan) was already booked hence my rented Indian car dropped me at my hotel in Bhutan.
I had my lunch at the hotel and then went asleep. When I woke up it was evening already.I again by foot cross the border and came to India to have my dinner also my target was to get a new SIM and to book a rented car for my trip to Thimpu,Punakha and Paro.
I had my dinner and at the same time booked my car bearing Bhutanese number plate.
People generally do their Permit cum Visa from the border town itself but I had already done it from Kolkata. I saved my time and energy so the very next day I invested that time and energy to see the notable places in Phuentsholing and then moved towards Thimphu.
Some tips I can share are:
1. Carry your Passport and lots of photocopies of the same
2. Carry atleast 12 passport size colour photos
3. ATMs are not available in Bhutan. Carry lots of cash. Divide cash into 4 or 5 parts and stash it into different luggages.
4. Always carry a pocket knife ( I had a very big one!!!)
5. Carry loads of woolens and 2 good wind cheaters
6. Carry at least 4 strips/ 2 bottles of all necessary medicines. There are not many medical shops in Bhutan.
7. Carry lots of extra battery cells and universal adaptor for plug points
8. As far as possible, do not wear Gold
9. Carry mosquito repellants
10. Carry extra film rolls/ memory cards
11. Carry medicines for motion sickness and vomiting. There are a 1000 hairpin curves en-route to Thimpu!
12. Alchohol is cheap, so if possible, avoid drinking water!!!
The Sightseeing which can be covered are mentioned below,
1.National Memorial Chorten.
2.Thimphu Monastery or Jangtho Pelri Lakhang.
3.Motithang Takin Reserve.
4.Tashi Che Dzong (Administrative HQ).
5.Simtokha Dzong.
6.Folk Heritage Museum.
7.Desen Choling Palace (from outside only).
8.De Chen Phu Lakhang.
9.Kuensel Phodrang (Buddha Point).
10.Weekend Farmer's Market.
11.Fazo Ding Monastery.
12.Changankha Lakhang.
13.The Textile Museum (on Norzin Lam).
14.Alaya Gallery.
15.Water Dragon Gallery.
16.Crocodile Park Phuntsholing, Bhutan.

Solo Trip to Bhutan by Road | Phuntsholing | How to get a permit for Indians? | Bhutan Series Intro
HELLO MY PEOPLE. I'm visiting Bhutan solo by road, and this is the first video in the series. The nearest airport is Bagdogra airport although you can also fly Druk Airways and land directly at Paro (expensive option). From Bagdogra it takes about 5 hours to reach Phuntsholing by road and you can get a taxi from right outside the airport. At Phuntsholing border you will require a permit to visit beyond the 5 km border radius. The visa entry is otherwise free, but the permit is issued for 7 days based on some background checks and upon submission of the following documents -
1) Photocopy of your identity card - Passport/Voter's ID card
2) An immigration form that is provided at any shop near Immigration office
3) Proof of stay of onward journey (You will need confirmed proof of booking for atleast first night in Thimphu/Paro)
4) One passport size photograph
5) For all solo female travellers - Please write a hand written undertaking stating that you are responsible for your own safety and address it to The Immigration Officer, Immigration office, Phuntsholing Bhutan,
For getting a permit at the earliest, please reach the office at 8:30 am with all your documents and stand in a queue. The office opens at 9:00 am. In my case I got the permit within half hour because I arrived early.
For booking the same hotel that I stayed in, you can use the following link -
You'll earn INR 700 on your booking once you book and stay at the hotel.

Trekking in Bhutan, River Farting in Bhutan, Bird Watching Tourism in Bhutan

Bhutan limits the number of tourists in the country and thus, it has a small handicraft industry too. You can buy handicrafts such as carpets, colorful masks, jewellery, silver, bronzes, hand-woven bamboo items and Bhutanese wooden products at Thimphu as souvenirs and gifts for your family and friends though. Hand made wooden bowls or dappa are ethnic and practical souvenirs. The two halves of these bowls fit together so tightly that they can be used to carry cooked food and you can use them as salad or cookie bowls at home. Dappa can be purchased anywhere in Bhutan but is considered a speciality of the Trashi Yangtse region. Similarly, bamboo reeds are woven into small baskets and are used just like dappas. They are the specialty of the south of Bhutan and come in beautiful designs.
Unique Himalayan beads that are oblong in shape and available in brown and cream colors are known as Dzi beads. Jewellery made of Dzi beads can be ver expensive and is considered precious, ever since wealthy Taiwanese people took a liking to them. There are cheaper fake versions of these beads and their jewellery is available in the market too. Bhutan is famous for its stamps and has a worldwide reputation as the 'philatelist's paradise'. Bhutanese stamps have detailed images and bright and vibrant colors. Recently, collectors have been attracted to the series of Bhutanese stamps that pay tribute to Walt Disney characters. Other famous stamps that have been rated high by the philatelists include the commemorative stamp for the 1994 World Cup and the stamp that marked German Unification.
You can visit the Central Post Office at Thimphu and look at the collections and 'First-Day Issues' on sale there. Even if you are not into stamp collecting, the beautiful stamp collections in Stamp Collector's books can make unique presents for someone back home. You can also buy rich fabric; silk, handmade paper products, Buddhist paintings and thangkas or religious paintings at Thimphu. You can find cheaper carpets at Tongsa, which is the best place to buy yatras too. Yatras or Yethras are colorful strips of woolen cloth, dyed with natural colors, that is used to make different fabric items ranging from blankets to jackets, bags and rugs. It is considered to be the specialty of the Jakar area. Bhutanese woven cloth is famous all over the world and can be used to make apparels, wall hangings, tablemats and rugs.
Bhumthang honey, jams and comfitures are loved by connoisseurs and make original presents. You may want to buy traditional clothes as souvenirs such as Gho and Kira. Bhutan has a thriving liquor industry and Bhutan Mist is something, alcohol-lovers would like to taste. You may find print film at Thimphu but slide film is difficult to find in Bhutan. You can grab some good deals at the picturesque and colorful weekend markets held close to river on Saturday and Sunday. Besides traditional Bhutanese handicrafts, you may also find Indian jewellery here. Do not purchase antiques in Bhutan, as you are not allowed to take them outside the country.

Exiting Rafting in Mo Chhu River | Punakha | Bhutan
Khansum to Punakha Dzong
Length: 5.6 miles
Gradient: 26 fpm
Difficulty: Class II+
Put-in: Trail to Khansum Yulley Namgyal Chorten
Take-out: Below Punakha Dzong
The Mo Chhu starts high in the Himalayas and has a few runnable sections before meeting the Pho Chhu at the Punakha Dzong. Mo means female and Chhu means water or river, so this is the Female River. This section of river has easy Class I and II rapids combined with beautiful scenery, making it the most rafted section of river in Bhutan.
You begin at a bridge that crosses the Mo Chhu and leads to a trail that goes up to the Khansum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. It’s well worth the 30 minute hike through rice paddies up to the chorten before you paddle down the river. The first couple rapids are the most difficult (easy Class II+) and the remainder is a fairly easy float through a beautiful canyon.
The highlight is rafting by the Punakha Dzong, an old military fortress built in 1637 that is currently used for government offices, monasteries, and is the winter home of the Je Khenpo (the religious leader of Bhutan). Just past the Punakha Dzong the Mo Chhu joins with the Pho Chhu and becomes the Puna Tseng Chhu. You can take out on the right just below the confluence or paddle down further to the town of Punakha.
Generally rafting conjures of images of crashing through horrendous rapids and monstrous waves with laughing and screaming joyful rafters hanging on but in the context of Rafting in Bhutan, it is a gentle drift-down-the-river admiring the scenery and running a few small yet exciting rapids.
The most of the rivers in Bhutan are very steep and highly rushing with limited road access makes it considerably unsuitable for white water rafting. Only a few rivers are opened for rafting considering their safe course and easy access.
The Pho Chu, with its approx 16 km course with about 15 rapids of class 2-4 is the most popular for rafting in Bhutan followed by Mo Chu river with 10 Km course comprising around 10 rapids with 2 - 2+ rapids.
Drifting past imposing 17th century Punakha Dzong (fort cum monastery) watching world’s rarest bird, the white belled Heron in its natural habitat and Kingfishers frolicking on riverbank - all these topped off with spectacular sight of serene lush green alpine valleys, are the most amazing experience you would love to treasure. Rafting in Bhutan is a superb experience in its own right.
No special experience is required as long as you do not mind doing a bit of paddling and getting a bit wet - or quite possibly very wet! - then you will have an exciting time riding the white waters of the Himalayan rivers.
Rivers in Bhutan also offer great potential for Kayaking. If you are looking for more adventure, we will be happy to customize a suitable Kayaking adventure in Bhutan.

Bhutan ~ Land Of Thunder Dragon
Road To Thailand Episode I -BHUTAN
Land Of Thunder Dragon
*Steering to Land Of Thunder Dragon ????????????????*
Bhutan is called Druk Yul - Land of Thunder Dragon , because of the violent and large thunderstorms that whip down through the valleys from the Himalayas.
*Steering to Bhutan* ;
Mumbai To Bhutan(Phuentsholing) by Road : 2436Kms /46Hrs/3Days
Flight - Mumbai to Bagdogra (Direct 3 hours /Via Kolkata 7-8hours )
Bagdogra to Phuentsholing - 165 Kms /4Hours drive .
We chose to fly to Bagdogra through Kolkata to save on time for our Road To Thailand in a lil tight schedule to complete all in 20days ,Since we have already driven to North East in 2017 to Kathmandu and Shillong/Cherrapunji so this time we transported our Campervan Nissan NV 200 to Bagdogra and started our journey from Siliguri (Siliguri to Bagdogra is just 20 mins drive ) .One need to keep the transportation timings in mind to that taking atleast one week ahead , despite we doing our best the Campervan got delivered a day later and we ended up shopping only at Bagdogra for a day .
Woh kahte Hain na...aage badhen se pahle ek kadam peeche ... Yeah Many will be wondering why we planned Bhutan for our Road To Thailand Expedition ..I wanted to experience what gives Bhutan So much on Happiness Index being our neighbors and we have too much to cover for .
Nonetheless if we leave behind the race of winning all the time and start living what fuels us more ,may be we will feel that happiness within and that's my expedition journeys are all about !!
It's not the destinations which fuels me but the journey steering to
And steering here is easier than our another neighbor Nepal as the road conditions are far better and one will love steering to the Himalayan curves in a carbon free zone ,two wheelers or 4 wheeler you will love steering here.
*Permits*
Bhutan is half n hour ahead of India and thus one need to know this to get their permits if trying to reach Phuentsholing in afternoon , otherwise it's advisable to reach here a day ahead and stay at Phuentsholing .
On Weekends the Immigration office and RTO offices are closed and thus on Monday one can expect a sudden rush to the offices and thus need to plan this well.
If you are traveling in a group of more than 4-5 ,I recommend to have an agent who can file the papers else no point all preparing same set of papers and stand in long queue , for a couple you can come early as 9am with all the Forms /Annexure mentioned on the website along with all the relevant ID and address proof if not carrying Passports (For Indians only )Otherwise Passport is must .
The Immigration office /Permit office is 5 mins walk from Bhutan Gate , Phuentsholing.
The permit taken from Phuentsholing is valid to travel to Paro and Thimpu and for onwards to Punakha and Phobjikha can be taken from Thimpu Permit office if you want to steer /Ride on your own vehicles.
The approximate time taken at both the offices end to end is 2 hours , so keep that in mind while preparing the iteneary.
Checkpoints - One should get their Passport/Permits stamped at all the checkposts along with vehicle permission and should ensure to stamp out also while returning through same route as mentioned in your permits.
Bike and Car Rentals
One can get Bike on rents easily between Rs 1200-1400 per day and Cars for Rs 4000-5000 per day .
Important Travel Tips :
1)Currency
Indian currency and Bhutan Currency have same value and one need not worry exchanging currencies while traveling to Bhutan if carrying INR .
2)LocalSimCard can be made available at Permit office or with valid Passports in Phuentsholing.
3)Travel Documents -
Passport or Valid ID proof preferably Voter ID Card/Aadhar Card , Driving License for Vehicle permit along with Valid Insurance and Pollution Certificate .
4)Travel Kit
Since it's a 4 hours drive each from Bagdogra to Phuentsholing and Again Phuentsholing to Paro/Thimpu one must carry TravelEssentials like Foot Pumps /Puncture Kit/Torch Lights and a good stepeney .
5) Responsible VanLifer - Be a responsible VanLifer if you are driving your own and do not honk, do not litter and keep this beautiful country as it is which inspired you to travel that far .
6) Staying In Phuentsholing doesn't require a permit for Indians and thus you can apply for permits in the morning for Thimpu and Paro.
7)Permits can only be taken between 9am to 4:30PM on all weekdays , Saturday-Sundays , Immigration offices are closed.
8)As mentioned earlier Bhutan is half n hour ahead of India ,IST.
9)Since it's uphill drive ,you won't get dividers or Highway lanes and thus need to respect traffic rules without honking.
10) Google Maps - Have a proper mounting to keep the Google Maps so that you can steer uphill with ease.
11) And last , have some amazing road trip playlists to fuel you up.
