The Bhutan Experience
Landing at Paro airport is said to be one of the most difficult landings at any airport in the world, as the valley is surrounded by steep hills and snow-capped mountains and any approach or exit from the valley must be rapid and steep, in order to surmount the valley walls.
The yogi Jetsun Milerapa levitates in thin air. The bare bodied performer can withstand icy temperatures for more than 40 minutes.

In Bhutan, it is common to find phallus symbols painted on the walls of houses and in temples. It may be a weird sight for us but for the Bhutanese people, it is a sign of fertility good luck that diverts the evil spirit.
Taktsang Monastery: One of the oldest Buddhist sacred sites in Bhutan. It is quite a trek to get to this monastery but definitely well worth it!
Bhutanese jewellery is limited but spectacular - ear-rings made of gold and turquoise, silver broaches and belt ornaments, elaborate pearl, agate and coral necklaces. Women's jewellery uses simple engraving set with coral and turquoise.
Built at the cost of US$100 million Buddha Dordenma statue in Thimphu, Bhutan. Buddha Dordenma is a gigantic Shakyamuni Buddha statue still under construction in the mountains of Bhutan.

[RWMF2019] Druk Folk Musician (Bhutan)
Druk Folk Musician from Bhutan have their amazing performance on 13th July 2019 at the Theater Stage in Sarawak Cultural Village during the Rainforest World Music Festival 2019.
Druk Folk Musician are 3 acclaimed singers and instrumentalists. Sonam Dorji is a master drangyen (the Bhutanist lute) player. Ugyen Panday has been awarded “Best Singer of Bhutan” for his distinct voice. And Novin Kharel is a multi-instrumentalist with immense skill in improvisation and his demand for authenticity. Together, they present Bhutan folk songs and bring a touch of their gross national happiness to the Rainforest World Music Festival.

UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner's Visit to Bhutan - March 2019
UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner visited Bhutan from 12-14 March 2019. He was in the country to co-chair Bhutan's 14th Round Table Meeting (RTM) along with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Tandi Dorji.
While in the country, the Administrator received an audience with His Majesty the King. During the audience, Mr Steiner presented a Special Award of Recognition to His Majesty for outstanding contribution to human development.
He met and held discussions with the Prime Minister, Dr. Lotay Tshering, Foreign Minister Dr. Tandi Dorji and other senior government officials.
He took part in the 4th Royal Institute for Governance and Strategic Studies (RIGSS) Dialogue as the Guest Speaker. The dialogue, Moderated by Dasho Kinley Dorji, centered around the theme of Rethinking Development: Advancing Human Wellbeing and Protecting the Planet.
He was also a part of a panel on GNH that discussed Reimagining Development for Happiness and Wellbeing at the RTM.
Mr Steiner is the most senior UN Official to visit Bhutan in 40 years.

Samdrup Jongkhar Initiative, an NGO based in Samdrup Jongkhar, has been
promoting zero waste strategies to reduce waste, create awareness on waste
management and empower communities in SamdrupJongkhar.
Making crafts works from waste is among the key zero waste management
initiatives of The Samdrup Jongkhar Initiative.
It involves training mainly rural women in making various products from
plastic wastes including carry bags, mats and baskets.
Yurung Zangmo and Choki are one of the beneficiaries of the Samdrup
Jongkhar Initiative.
Our producer Sonam Dema met them in Dewathang to share their stories of
craftsmanship, challenges and empowerment.

One of the biggest structures in Bhutan, centenary farmers market was built in 2008 to mark the coronation of fifth king of Bhutan and 100 years of monarchy. The two storied building has 458 stalls for sale of vegetables, fruits, meat and other farm produces. It also houses cafeteria and separate stalls for non wood forest products. Vendors from throughout the country come here to sell their farm produces. The market is open 6 days in a week except Wednesday.
