Dali Monastery Darjeeling : Colorful Buddhist monastery with art & sculpture
Exploring the world.
Located in Dali which is about 5km away from Darjeeling Town, although this monastery is popularly known as the Dali Monastery, it's actual name is Druk Sangag Choling Monastery. This is the name which is prominently written on its outside wall as you approach it from the road and walk through its arch gate.
When you look at the monastery from a little distance standing on the Hill Cart Road, it looks awesome. Its one of the largest monasteries with white buildings built in typical Tibetan style and perched on a steep hill.

BHUTIA | North Bengal | Darjeeling Hills | Buddhism
The word Bhotia is derived from the word Bodpa, which means the inhabitants of Tibet. The Bhutia tribe as listed in the scheduled tribe list of West Bengal is comprised of a number of multi ethnic and linguist groups who had migrated from Tibet at various points of time. Mostly they are the Red Hats or the followers of the Nyingmapa sect of Buddhism who had faced the royal atrocities upon their religion and to save that they had migrated to the southern parts of Sikkim, Bhutan and East Nepal. During occasions, they are still found to be wearing their traditional dress the Bakhus. Bhutias celebrate either the ‘Royal New Year’ or ‘Losar’ or the ‘Cultivators New Year’, which is also known as ‘Sonam Losar’ or ‘Losoong’. During this celebration, they engage in their traditional archery game. Mostly through their practice of the Drukpa-Kagyupa form of Buddhism, they maintain their ethnic identity.
