Niemeyer Cultural Centre, Le Havre, France

Officially inaugurated in November 1982, this building, all volumes and curves, imposes a lyrical presence in a strictly orthogonal urban environment. It was renovated and refurnished in 2014. The architect and city planner Auguste Perret wanted the Place Gambetta to be once more the artistic and cultural centre of the city. But this was not to be. Oscar Niemeyer will be the one to fulfil Perret’s ambition between 1978 and 1982. Therefore the two masters of reinforced concrete show each other off: the free and fluid lines of Oscar Niemeyer echo the majestic and orthogonal ones of Auguste Perret in admirable fashion.

Brasilia & Le Havre - These two twentieth century cities belong to the World Heritage list: Le Havre, rebuilt after WWII, and the new city of Brasilia. Listed in 1987, the Capital of Brazil was created from scratch at the end of the 1950s, at the very centre of the country, by urbanist Lucio Costa and architect Oscar Niemeyer, who built particularly innovative official buildings there. The creation of Brasilia was a major event of the history of urbanism because of the challenge at stake, the enormous size of the project and monies involved.

The Maison de la Culture (cultural centre) of Le Havre is one of the major projects famous sculptor-architect Oscar Niemeyer realized outside of his country, Brazil. His architectural expression follows the tenets of Le Corbusier. Architecture here shows a veil of concrete painted white, free curving shapes trying to express architectural poetry. Loved, hated, misunderstood, acknowledged the world over, Oscar Niemeyer’s work leaves no-one unmoved. The Maison de la Culture is renamed Le Volcan (the Volcano) in 1990.

The Volcano - Hyperbolic, it is the largest building whose shell was calculated and drawn using a computer programme derived from a NASA one. There used to be 1.200 seats in the theatre, on an amphitheatre lay-out, looking out over a 25,70 m wide, 8,50 m high stage. The theatre was totally renovated in 2015, wood being the main material used: seats, flooring, entrance hall desks. A smaller theatre is available, used for shows for children and conferences.
The Oscar Niemeyer Library - A smaller hall used to present various artistic and theatre projects, concerts or dance shows. Nowadays, it has been turned into a modern Public library.

The Abbey Graville , also called abbey of Sainte-Honorine , was founded in the xi th century. It is located in the district of Graville-Sainte-Honorine in Le Havre , department of Seine-Maritime in Normandy. It is in the agglomeration of Le Havre since 1919. The abbey is classified as a historical monument since 1875 for its abbey church, a classification in 1921 for two underground rooms, and an inscription in 2000 for all the prior buildings.

Abbey of Graville is the modern name of the priory of Graville, GRAVILLA founded around 1050 by Guillaume Malet, lord of the place with regular canons of the priory of Sainte-Barbe-en-Auge. The church is dedicated to Saint Honorine . There is evidence today that the history of the relics of Sainte Honorine, is linked to religious came from Bayeux the vi th century. Legend has nourished, like many others, the historical or scientific gap. Sainte Honorine was not martyred at Melamare in 303, under the Empire of Diocletian, thrown into the Seine by the pagans of Lillebonne to come aground at the level of the abbey. They are, from all likelihood, religious Graville that housed the relics of the saint, in the reign of Eudes I st(888-898). Count of Paris, Eudes became the first Capetian king.

The abbey of Graville is, among the great religious establishments installed along the Seine, the most downstream. Hermitage in the vi th century, the site becomes Graville pilgrimage when welcoming the relics of Sainte Honorine. William Malet , companion of William the Conqueror , returning victorious from the Battle of Hastings, gives it all its greatness ( xi th century). It is to him that we owe the first impetus of the Romanesque abbey church that we can still admire today. We do not know the details of the donations of the generations which succeeded him directly, on the other hand, we know that Guillaume Nolasque de Graville, lord of Graville and baron d'Eye 3began construction of the convent buildings end of the xii th century - beginning of xiii th century, which it remains today traces in the chapter house.

During the Hundred Years War, the North Tower of the facade was partially destroyed so that it does not serve as a place of observation to the English. The South Tower totally disappeared during the wars of religion . During its history, the Abbey has hosted world leaders as headquarters: Philip the Fair in August 1295, Henry V of England in August 1415 Charles I st Cossé , Marshal of France and Charles IX in 1563 The heart of Louis Malet de Graville , Admiral of France was deposited in the church.

In 1840, it was decided to enter a phase of important works in order to preserve the Abbey from ruin and to return to a state of origin. The architect appointed for the restoration is Charles Louis Fortune Brunet-Debaines , architect of the City of Le Havre. The small porch north of the nave, visible on some old engravings, is removed. Inside the church, the ogival gallery east of the nave is also removed to find the original plan of the church. The crossing of the transept is restored. Excavations conducted by Albert Naefare undertaken in 1890. They have largely contributed to make known the Abbey. In 1909, it was the turn of the gable and the North transept to be restored. Attention is then paid to the low rooms, they will in turn classified as Historical Monuments in 1921. In 1944, the church, and more particularly the bedside, are damaged. After restoration, the nave and the transept are reopened in 1982, then the choir a few years later.

Although the architecture of Auguste Perret is internationally recognized today, the history and layout of the apartments proposed in the draft reconstruction of Havre were long ignored.
Opened in March 2006 , as part of the inscription by UNESCO 's Downtown rebuilding of Le Havre on the List of World Heritage of Humanity, the witness Apartment Perret is a museum of the City of Havre dedicated in architecture interior, as well as furnishings and daily life since the release until the mid 1950s .

The immediate post-war period is a search for ideal housing for the many victims of the bombed cities; during the International Exhibition of Town Planning and Housing (July 1947) are presented very diversified projects like the Radiant City of Marseille ( Le Corbusier ) or the buildings of Sotteville - lès - Rouen by Marcel Lods . As for the buildings without individual assignments imagined by Auguste Perret 's Atelier , located in the town hall square in Le Havre , they are already an example to follow in many architectural journals.

Drawn and published in 1946, this project obeys several constraints in order to grant:

an economical solution ( concrete material , prefabrication , standardization )
a sustainable construction method (classic ( banal ) architecture , robust frame)
modern comfort (sunshine, interior equipment).

Beyond the arrangement in open islands, the study of the interiors, also makes it possible to understand that this architecture is not reduced to its classicism but widens to a search for optimal solutions, defined by the result of the experiments the past. On the other hand, the ideal of sustainability is made even more obvious by observing the flexibility of the interiors as the uses are considered as provisional elements of the architecture: The interior of the apartment? Naked. No fixed decor. Just proportions. It is up to the inhabitant to decorate his dwelling; and I imagine that this scenery will vary. To contemplate without respite the same forms is to hear the same poet daily. There is something to make it odious.

The modern architect will be better able to respect the personality of the inhabitant . Expressing this way in 1925, it is easy to understand that the exterior aesthetics wants to evoke the general character of an urban dwelling (the Haussmann island), without, however, determining its internal use irreversibly. The interior design of the Perret apartments was revolutionary.

The “Bains Maritimes” put lockers, hot showers, toilets, bike rentals and equipment loans for disabled people at your disposal. Facing the sea the CNH swimming club offers a 50-metre pool and a leisure pool with a counter-current system and bubble loungers, water gymnastics classes, a small pool, a water dome with fun activities for kids, a 100-square metre gym and a club house.

Special facilities allow disabled people to access the entire site which has been awarded the “Tourism & Handicap” label. During the season, restaurants with terraces facing the sea serve a diversified cuisine, including classic French and more exotic flavours.

The Rouelles Park is the second largest green space in the city of Le Havre in Seine-Maritime . It covers 160 hectares in the district of Rouelles and offers 20 km of paths for walkers, riders and cyclists.

The two main historic buildings in the park are the mansion Bouteillerie and dovecote dating from the xvii th century. This dovecote was built by the family Le Roux in 1631 according to a circular plan in black flint and with 10 chaining of white stones.

It houses a sundial made the year of the construction of the loft. An old stable, a barn and a charreterie complete the set. The park is also home to thebroadleaf arboretum of the Ardennes plateau, which contains 259 varieties of trees

The hanging gardens of Le Havre , abbreviated the Hanging Gardens to occupy a site of 17 hectares in the Sanvic district in Havre . This botanical garden is located on the heights of Le Havre inside the former fort of Sainte-Adresse . They dominate the lower town, the estuary and the Channel . In total, the hanging gardens in 2010 had some 3,700 plant species. The spirit of the garden is to pay tribute to botanists (like Norman botanists Lesueur , La Billardière ,d'Incarville ) who have traveled or are still traveling the world, many of whom embarked at Le Havre .

The fort of Sainte-Adresse was built in 1854 - 1858 , during the Second Empire , according to the model of military architecture inherited from Vauban . It serves first of cantonment to battalions of artillery on foot; the xx th century, the cigarette camp Home Run is installed, and the sire is occupied by the gendarmerie and the Republican Guard . In 1963 , the 74 th infantry regiment resumed. The military base is decommissioned in 1979 .

In 2000, the municipality of Le Havre decided to buy the decommissioned fort abandoned. After studies and consultations, it was in 2005 that she decided to convert it into a botanical garden and a place for a walk. After three years of work, the Hanging Gardens are inaugurated on September 20 , 2008.

The Hanging Gardens offer a botanical journey through different gardens and greenhouses that gather plants by geographical origin. These are installed on bastions of the ramparts or inside the fort. Since 2014, the Hanging Gardens have been labeled Remarkable Garden rewarding the quality of their maintenance and the reception of the public. The entrance of the Hanging Gardens has been free since its creation.

This garden offers newly acclimatized plants in Europe. These plants are brought from around the world by botanists who continue to explore the world, this garden pays tribute to them: acacias , maples , jasmine , cotoneaster , birch , buddleia , etc. This garden offers a view of the estuary of the Seine.

This garden located on the southern ramparts of the fort pays tribute to horticulturists Henri and Louis Cayeux. Both Le Havre, who were also directors of the gardens of Le Havre in the early xx th century, worked to create cultivars and hybrids, including roses or hydrangeas.

The house of the owner is a house of the xviii th century situated in Le Havre which was owned by several dealers before being converted into a museum. It is located at 3 quai de l'île, in the Saint-François district , facing the fishing port. It was classified historic monument by decree of April 26, 1950.

The house of the shipowner was built on the plans of the architect of the city of Le Havre, Paul-Michel Thibault (1735-1799), from 1790 . Paul-Michel Thibault was the architect of the fortifications and fontainier of the city of Le Havre. Martin-Pierre Foäche , a merchant of the city, acquires the house in 1800; he installs his offices there and his winter residence. In the middle of the xix th century , the residence is occupied by the Hotel Helvetia. In 1880 , it is transformed into a building of report.

The building remains standing despite the bombing of Le Havre in September 1944 that destroyed 80% of the city. In 1950 , it is listed on the list of historical monuments and bought five years later by the city of Le Havre. It is the only house witness of the time. The shipowner's house has a facade of neoclassical architecture. It stands on five levels: a ground floor (stables and warehouse), a mezzanine, two floors and an attic .

The two floors correspond to the noble part, made up of family apartments with the room of Monsieur, the room of Madame, the large living room, the music room, the dining room, and the floor of sociability and the intellectual life, with the reading room, the library, the cabinet of maps and plans, the cabinet of curiosities of the peoples, a guest room and a boudoir of memories, all arranged as living space with furniture, paintings and arts decorative.

Neither quite a museum, nor quite a house, the shipowner's house is open to visitors since 2006. This house museum displays various objects of the old regime and the xix th century : furniture, old maps, statues, paintings, old books. The pieces are decorated with old books, paintings of the museum of modern art André-Malraux and objects of the museum of natural history. Among the most notable pieces are:

The gardens of the City Hall of Le Havre extend south of the City Hall of Le Havre . These gardens were designed personally by the architect and urban planner Auguste Perret . They occupy most of the square of the town hall whose dimensions are imposing (280 × 250 meters). They are embellished with some 22,500 plants.

The first gardens date back to the 1850s when the new Le Havre town hall is built in the center. Designed by Louis Lemaître , they are very popular with the Havrais. An orangery was added in 1870 and a bandstand in 1897. The latter is replaced by a statue of King Francis I and a fountain after the First World War . The gardens are destroyed by the English bombings of September 1944. They are remodeled by Auguste Perret and those that can be seen today date from 1990. The exotic wood trellises were dismantled in 2010.

The southern part of the gardens is dominated by a monumental fountain and an aquatic garden decorated with metal sculptures representing birds made by Lartisien. The paths open between geometric flower beds. The perspective overlooks the rue de Paris. The center of the gardens is decorated with statues: memorial Souviens-Toi (1974 and 1990) work in bronze of Henri-Georges Adam ; statue of Gabriel Guerin ; stele of Jean Maridor . The northern part, near the town hall, is dominated by a large concrete slab and a large pond. On the west side is a children's park.

The war memorial, or rather should we speak of Victory Monument. This is part of the heritage of the city since 1924, when it opened. Designed by Auguste Perret, it is considered by experts as one of the most imposing memorial monuments and most successful France. And because no less than 6000 names of Le Havre, killed in action between 1914 and 1918 are engraved on the stone. Le Havre paid a very heavy price during the First World War.
The completion of this work was entrusted in 1922 to the sculptor Pierre-Marie Poisson on the basis of a competition he won handily.

The church was designed by the chief architect for the reconstruction of Le Havre, Auguste Perret, teacher and mentor to the Swiss architect Le Corbusier. The sombre interior is in the Neo-Gothic style. The tower is 107 metres tall and acts as a beacon visible from out at sea, especially at night when illuminated. This is the must visit of the reconstructed city. This masterpiece by Auguste Perret will surprise you. Take the trouble to enter, you will discover a majestic modern church.

With 6500 stained glass windows and concrete walls, St. Joseph's Church is a lighthouse in the heart of the city. It was erected in memory of the victims of the bombings of the Second World War.
Visible more than 60 km offshore in good weather thanks to its 107 meters high, the octagonal lantern tower is a body with its square base that combines nave and choir. This masterpiece of 20th century architecture will take your breath away with its incredible beauty.

My Le Havre

Because LeHavre has mostly modern architecture, it presented itself as a challenge to me. The Unesco-protected post-war buildings have their own charm. St Joseph Church is fascinating because of it's enormous bell-tower, auditorium seats, and natural lighting. Most of the color you see in this 50 year old building comes from the sun's rays through stained glass.
