Welcome to the space race, it was the nineteen-fifties and the USA and USSR were in battle to become the first to explore the great unknown.. Of course the Russians got there first so the Americans had some catching up to do.
Scenic have landed us in Moscow at ground zero, no trip to Russia would be complete without a little stop off in Space. That's one small step for man.
The cosmonaut museum gives an insight into the incredible feats of the scientists and astronauts who decided to take on the universe.
In this amazing space race of course the true legends were Belka and Strelka because they were the first living things to return from space and of course came back to a rock star reception.. Well not quite but they did get their photo in the paper.
Moscow’s riches don't just lie in her space program and Scenic send you deep inside the infamous Kremlin to a building known as the armory.
Some of the most expensive gifts and jewels in all of Russia are here in this museum and if you don't think the credit card can handle one of these there's always the gift shop.
The Armory's big draw card are some very expensive-looking eggs designed and crafted by the Fabergé family, the imperial eggs were designed for royalty and this is the best collection anywhere in the world.
If all the jewels and riches are getting you in the mood to spend, Tverskaya street is dangerously close.
This was one of the very first streets in the city and has kilometers of retail therapy and cafes to keep you busy.
There is so much to do here in Moscow and thankfully Scenic Tours give you a little bit of downtime, now not enough to get yourself in trouble but just enough to sample some of the local way of life and if you like the best coffee in Moscow come and see my friends at Cyactbe.
Yes the language is a little difficult to pick up but that's half the fun.
I know that you only want to come to Russia if you get to do it in style so with a little help my friends may I introduce the Scenic Tsar.
Patron: “Martini, shaken not stirred”
Waiter: “Excuse me sir I believe that this is yours”
David: “Wow impressive”
The Scenic Tsar is all-inclusive luxury and here to satisfy your every need with no expense spared on the bubbly stuff, we set sail up the Moscow canal.
We have left Moscow and now we're on our way to St. Petersburg and I do need to introduce captain Oleg; who is part of the wonderful team who are going to make sure that our journey is very very comfortable and since this is a very special captain's dinner I thought that I should get dressed up as well..
So ladies and gentlemen, eye eye captain!
Cheers!

River cruising in Europe has become very popular over the last few years because once you step on board everything is just laid out in front of you.
Scenic are sailing us up the beautiful Rhine River in Germany and today we're visiting the little town of Heidelberg.
Perched high up on the hilltop is the town's star attraction.
David: “So this castle seems quite unique compared to the other ones I’ve seen in Europe”
Guide: “Oh it's an absolutely unique castle, it’s a castle that was built by different rulers of a period of five centuries and every ruler had his own special motivation to build this particular castle.”
With such a mix of influences over the centuries, the Heidelberg castle really is like nothing else in Europe.
David: “And now we get to experience all these different architects in one go”
Guide: “Correct one visit to Heidelberg and you cover a world of 500 years”
Amazingly enough the castle was neglected for years; its stone was stolen to build local houses and it was even crippled by a lightning strike at one point.
But thankfully a huge restoration project has brought her back to life.
One of her legends is the world's largest wine barrel, it was built to store the taxes of the local growers and guarded very closely by an alcoholic dwarf.
I don't know about you but I would say that would be one hell of a hangover.
While you're exploring Europe, your home away from home is the mighty Scenic Jade; Her ethos is fairly simple all inclusive luxury.
And one of the biggest pains when you do travel is changing hotel rooms but because we're river cruising things are a little bit different.
You unpack once at the start and that’s it, come and take a look at this.
So every single room has it's very own sun deck with an electric windows so that means that you can actually control how you relax out here.
Ooh there’s just one thing missing everybody on board gets there very own Butler.
Thank you. 24/7.
The experience on board is exceptional and every detail has been taken care of to make sure your time here is five star all the way.
The winemaking town of Rudesheim is nestled in the world heritage-listed Rhine Valley; life here hasn't really changed much since the 17th century. With the odd new addition
Scenic have organized us a little stop off at Siegfried's mechanical museum, which has a definitely life of it’s own
David: “Mary where did all these bizarre musical machines come from?
Mary: “They come from all over Europe most of them are from Germany, some are from United States and they came together here in that place since about 50 years. You see these unique things as a foreigner of modern computers we cannot write any letters we enjoy beautiful music.”
David: “And what were these machines used for when they originally came out?”
Mary: “You found them very very often in dance halls in hotels in restaurants to entertain people”
I've got to say it is quite an unusual experience and just a word of warning.
Mary's enthusiasm is quite catching, so bring your dancing shoes.

Europe River Cruising with Scenic | David Whitehill in Koblenz

holiday destination Europe offers such a great range of experiences and I've jumped on board with Scenic as we arrive at our first port of Koblenz.
It's one of Germany’s oldest cities and lies at the meeting point of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers.
Its prime location though meant it needed some pretty serious protection.
The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress towers over the city and the Foundation's here date back before Christ.
It's now a living museum showcasing its 5,000 year history.
Most of the city down below was destroyed in World War Two and because of the strength of this fortress it actually became a safe house for many of the important artefacts from right around Germany.
Some of these walls here are over three meters thick, it’s quite an impressive wall.
The Rhine has been a gateway for a lot of Europe’s trade with Duisburg being a key city in their steel industry; and where there’s steel there’s usually beer.
Man: “Thank you very much ladies and gentlemen for being here in our house.. Cheers!”
Luckily beer tasting is a popular in Germany as it is in Australia.
So Scenic have lined up a quick insight into this German tradition.
We love this place!
Our next stop off is Maastricht, one of the Netherlands earliest settlements.
The first thing that you really notice when you come to Maastricht is just how beautiful it is, but what's really unique about this place is that it's been ruled by so many different nationalities over the centuries that it’s been able to take the very best of all those countries and bundle it up into one very punchy little city.
My Scenic guide Carla fills me in on some of the amazing history.
Carla: “So here we are the back Our Dear Lady Church.. over a thousand years old. In the French period we were conquered by the
French a couple of times that they didn't want anything to do with religion, so the church was used as a blacksmith.”
David “Oh wow”
Carla: “And the priests and the monks and everything were abolished sent away chased out of Maastricht.”
David “Is that sacrilege surely?”
Carla: “Well nowadays you would think so but then they didn’t really care, the French they wanted to conquer and they conquer”
The city does have a certain elegance about it, people watching is a local favourite and the exclusive shopping attracts visitors from all over Europe.
Even their puppy's are designer here.. aren’t you gorgeous.
After a big day of exploring there’s nothing better than a touch of five star luxury on board the Scenic Jade and what a way to wrap up another day of exploring in Europe.
Meanwhile in Russia
A traffic collision, also known as a traffic accident, motor vehicle collision, motor vehicle accident, car accident, automobile accident, road traffic collision, road traffic accident, wreck (USA), car crash, or car smash (Australian) occurs when a vehicle collides with another vehicle, pedestrian, animal, road debris, or other stationary obstruction, such as a tree or utility pole. Traffic collisions may result in injury, death, vehicle damage, and property damage.
A number of factors contribute to the risk of collision, including vehicle design, speed of operation, road design, road environment, driver skill and/or impairment, and driver behaviour. Worldwide, motor vehicle collisions lead to death and disability as well as financial costs to both society and the individuals involved.
3 Russian tourists survive after car falls into dam
Three Russian tourists in the Turkish province of Aydın survived an accident on Friday in which the car they were driving fell into a dam, by breaking the car's windows and swimming to dry land.
The incident took place in the İkizdere Dam in the İncirliova district. The three tourists, 35-year-old Aleksandr Anekcahap, a Russian businessman who is engaged in the trade of agricultural tools, 28-year-old Maxim Makcnm and 25-year-old Elena Eneha, were traveling towards the western province of İzmir. The trio were traveling in a car they rented in the province of Konya. The car reportedly fell into the dam because a navigation device misdirected the driver.
The driver realized too late that he was heading toward the dam and despite him applying the brakes at the last minute the car fell in. As the car slowly submerged into the water, Makcnm broke the right-side car window by hitting it with his elbow, and all three managed to escape and swam to land.
After the Russians reported the incident to officials, gendarmes identified the three tourists' whereabouts and provided aid to them. Teams from the Prime Ministry's Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) arrived at the scene to retrieve the tourists' suitcases. The car was then pulled out of the water with the help of a crane.
Anekcahap, speaking to the Doğan news agency after the accident, said he initially thought that they were going to die. Our salvation is a miracle, it is like being reborn, the Russian tourist added.
An investigation into the accident has been launched by the gendarmerie's office.
