Biddulph Grange Country Park
Biddulph Grange Gardens attracts visitors from all over. But what many people miss, even local people, is that the National Trust only operate a small part of the garden. The wild part, including ancient woodland, is owned and maintained by Staffs Moorlands, and is called Biddulph Grange Country Park.

Geological Gallery at Biddulph Grange Garden
Take a look around botanist James Bateman’s Geological Gallery at the National Trust's Biddulph Grange Garden in Staffordshire.
First described in 1862, the 100ft long gallery reconciled Batemans theological beliefs with his understanding of geology. Over the next 12 months we’ll be restoring the gallery, before replacing the missing fossils and rock strata.

Curiosities of Staffordshire - The Saracens of Biddulph Moor
Today we visit the church of St Lawrence in Biddulph, Staffs to see some medieval tomb lids and investigate their connection to a local legend. The story refers to 'The Black Men of Biddle' (Biddle being local dialect for 'Biddulph'), a local folk tale relating to a supposed group of Saracens brought back to Biddulph by crusader knights returning from the Holy Land in the middle ages.
The tomb lids themselves depict motifs which are consistent with those on tomb lids of knights throughout Europe. An eleborate cross with a sword motif is a common design to indicate the tomb of a noble. The axe is not generally considered a noble weapon but it is sometimes featured on tombs of warriors from the period. It is likely that these were the tombs of knights and it is certainly possible that they fought in the crusades given the local connection. They have even been mentioned in connection with the Knights Templar although there is no evidence of this. The Templars had a preceptory at nearby Keele so it isn't impossible that local noble families would have been connected with the order but to say these tombs were those of Templar knights is a stab in the dark.

Spectacular Spetchley Park Gardens - Worcestershire Attractions
Spetchley Park Gardens are large and interesting gardens that can hold your interest for several hours. There is a lake with adjacent arboretum, formal gardens, numerous water features and walled gardens. The compartmentalised design of the gardens means a surprise awaits you around every corner. The Berkeley family have owned Spetchley Park for over 400 years, but I believe the gardens date mainly from the Victorian era.
On the day that I shot this video, I think the garden must have been just about at its peak. Everything seemed to be in full bloom! An amazing day.
