Testing the Top Gear Hovervan - Unseen footage of the first hovercraft test!
Back in 2013, we were asked to provide a hovercraft for Jeremy to drive at the beginning of the Top Gear Hovervan episode and whilst we were in Peniston (yes, it really WAS filmed in Peniston!) were then asked to advise on the build. The whole concept was wrong from the outset, too heavy, too small and with the wrong skirt design. We told them to bin the engine and transmission - which they did - but going the whole way and removing the axles and wheels was too radical. The first time it started up, the skirt removed itself from underneath and laid itself on the top deck, and the fan frame and duct were in need of considerable strengthening, so there was plenty of problems to sort.
Getting involved so late on in the project meant we could only advise as best as possible - still, it did kind of work in the end - 600bhp basically battering its way through the laws of physics in the best tradition of Top Gear!
