5 UNUSUAL THINGS TO EXPERIENCE IN SOUTHERN AFRICA
ORIGINAL ARTICLE HERE:
1 FARTING ZEBRAS
Your Africa trip will be full of surprises, some more pleasant then the other. There will be two things you'll definitely remember after visiting Africa, the first time you see a hurd of black and white horses we like to call 'Zebras'. And the first time you hear these guys - and girls too – farting with every step they take. Didn't nobody teach them any manners?
2 BEING PART OF THE FOODCHAIN AGAIN
Wake up before sunrise, get dressed and get ready for some animal tracking 101. In the Kruger National Park you can go on a morning hike, accompanied by two rangers, to get up close and personal with: the Big 5, the Ugly 5 and all of the other inhabitants of the Kruger Park. Be a ranger for a day and go home feeling glad that humans are on the top of the food chain.
3 FEELING REALLY TINY
With all those skyscrapers we build, the planes we fly, the rockets we sent out to space, it's easy to forget how tiny we actually are. Go to the 'Fish River Canyon' in Africa, the second largest canyon in the world, and marvel at the wondrous things Momma Nature creates.
4 JUMPING OUT OF PLANE
Well, this is something you don't do every day. Climbing to 10.000 feet in a tiny airplane, strapped to another guy, with 4 other people filling all the available space in there is. But don't worry, after 15 minutes you'll have other things to worry about. Like the fact that the you're falling down to earth at a staggering speed of 55 meters per second.
5 A MOUTH FULL OF SAND
Do you remember those cold and snowy winters, where you would take you're sled and race your friends of the hills? Well you can do that all year round in the Namib Desert, just bring a piece of cardboard and before you know it, you're rushing downhill. Just like the old day, but now you're ending up with a mouth full of sand instead of snow.

Africa Safari Fishing at Sekoma and Ilombe Island Lodges, Zambia
On the banks of the Zambezi, close to the confluence with the Chobe, lie Sekoma and Ilombe Island Lodges. A Robinson Crusoe island, it teems with indigenous fauna and abundant flora and boasts more than 70 different fish species.
The waters surrounding Sekoma Island are only navigable by mokoro (dugout boat) except the northern point area which has been converted into the Lodge's harbour and clients, therefore, have total exclusivity.
At Sekoma there are 8 twin and 2 four sleeper tented suites. Ilombe has 5 twin tents and each can be easily converted in to one queen-size double or two singles. All ‘Safari-style’ tents have twin beds, en-suite bathroom facilities and are raised on wooden decking, each with their own breathtaking view of the Zambezi River.
From the lodges there is a mouthwatering choice of fishing in the Zambezi and Chobe rivers as well as the Kasai channel, providing a range of magnificent fishing opportunities.
Sekoma Lodge operates from the Zambian side of the Mambova Rapids on a stretch of river that experiences an annual flood. This flood brings growth and replenishment to the system.
Every year the Chobe and Zambezi floods onto its many floodplains, creating self-sustaining stocking. Tiger Fish use these flood plains as their breeding grounds
It is an ideal venue for the adventurous angler, whether a conventional lure or fly angler. Tiger fish, large tilapia, colourful bream species, catfish and African pike can be caught here. The hard-fighting tiger fish, which is world renowned for its fierce, acrobatic fight, has earned the reputation of being one of the world’s toughest freshwater fish.
With an infinite diversity of flora and fauna around every corner, this river is a professional and amateur photographer’s dream. Crocodile, buffalo, antelope, birds and (occasionally) lions roam the banks of the Chobe and hippos are hiding around every corner.

Man Chased By Hippo
READ MORE ABOUT KILLER HIPPO ON MY BLOG AT
(Photos of Hippo Chasing Man by Charles Hathom
Last year when I was in Uganda, a man told me a story about a gamekeeper who out ran a hippopotamus. I didn't believe the story at first but then I looked it up and it turned out to be true
Turns out the guy was a gamekeeper at Murchison Falls National Park... He got a little too close to one of the park hippos. The hippos charged him and the guy had to run for it.
Lucky the gamekeeper was a very good runner and out ran the hippo... Most people wouldn't be able to do that... Hippos have been clocked at speeds of up to 24 Miles Per Hour
Hippos may look like oversized harmless cows to some people, but truth be told they are one of the most dangerous beasts in Africa and kill more humans that any other animal there...
They can weigh up to 9000 pounds and and have teeth that are as sharp as razor blades. These beasts are vegetarians and don't eat people. But they will crush you between their giant jaws. Hippos can cut a crocodile in half in a single bite.
This is what happened to Spencer Tyron, a African hunter who was attacked by a bull hippo. The animal's crushing bite was so powerful it not only sliced Tyron's head off but his shoulders as as well not a good way to go.
Hippos will attack on land... and without warning!
But these days, most attacks from Hippos come in the water when boats get too close to them. There are dozens of videos on Youtube showing this. In one video, we can even see a hippo biting off the cowling of an outboard motor.
In most cases, the driver is able to get away quickly enough, but sometimes the hippo gets the upper hand and tragedy quickly ensues...
This is what happened to a young honeymoon couple from South Africa.
Bruce Simpson and his wife Janice were on safari in Botswana's Okavango Delta. They were traveling in a canoe much like this one with a guide. The canoe came too close to a hippo and was attacked. The hippo tipped the canoe over. He then crushed young Janice between his jaws and bit through her heart and lung. She died instantly.
Even professionals find it difficult to work with Hippos. In 2010 a group of veterinarians were testing a new tranquilizer on Hippo in South Africa. The tranquilizer turned out to be too weak. The animal woke up and attacked one of the doctors. He would have been killed if it had not been for an armed game warden who shot and killed the animal.
Despite all this, some some people think you can befriend a hippo but most times they end up dead wrong... including Marius Els a farmer in South Africa. He raised a young hippo from the age of 5 months. But before it was five years old, it oil led Marius in a vicious attack

Voiceover by Rodney Tompkins:
Also known as the “river horse,” this terrifying beast is responsible for killing more humans every year than any other beast in Africa. It's the hippo...& here's what happens when hippos attack.
What is it? The hippopotamus, or hippo for short, is a large semi-aquatic mammal that inhabits lakes, rivers, swamps & the l& surrounding them. Its name is derived from the Greek word ‘hippos’ which means 'horse' & ‘potamos’ meaning ‘river’. It lives in large groups of up to 30 animals where territorial bulls watch over the females & young. The hippo has unique physical features which make it one the most dangerous animals in its environment. The eyes, ears & nostrils of hippos are placed on the roof of the skull, enabling them to remain above water while the entire body is submerged. The hinge of its jaw is placed back far enough
5: Paul Templer
Paul Templer was a river guide who had an almost fatal encounter with a 4,000-pound hippo while leading a group of tourist kayakers along the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe. The attack happened approximately half a mile from Victoria Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in the world. Prior to the incident, Templer didn’t recall feeling danger approaching. In his recollection of the events, his
Where are they located? Hippopotamuses are large, mostly herbivorous mammals found mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. They're the third largest type of l& mammal after the elephant & rhinoceros.
4: Marius Els
The case of South African farmer Marius Els is evidence of how dangerous it can be to interact with a hippo. Els had raised Humphrey, his pet hippo, since it was only about five months old. Photos & a YouTube video show Els riding the beast through the river. He said ‘We go in the water & he allows me to get on his back & I ride him like a horse.’ Hippos are most territorial & dangerous when they’re in the water, but that didn’t stop Els who was completely comfortable around the animal, despite its formidable size & aggressive reputation. ‘I trust him with my heart that he will not harm anybody’, he said. Els kept more than 20 species of exotic
How will it kill you? Hippos are capable of killing humans on both l& & in water. Despite their heavy weight (ranging from 3,000-6,000 pounds) & short legs, they can easily outrun a human, clocking in at 19 mph). Their powerful jaws can kill crocodiles with ease, let alone a human being. Deaths occur when they feel their offspring
3: The Nigerian Schoolchildren
One of the most tragic hippo attacks in recent history happened in Niamey, the capital city of Niger. In this West African state, students often have to cross the Niger River by boat in order to reach their schools. At least 18 people were aboard such a boat when a large hippo overturned it. 12 students, seven girls & five boys lost their lives in the attack. The children were aged 13 & 12.
How to survive: If you're in a boat drifting in hippo-infested waters, allow the creatures plenty of space. Tap the side of the boat to signal your position so hippos don't come up beneath you. If you
2: The Villagers of Gouloumbou
Fishing on the Gambia River is how many people from the village of Gouloumbou, Senegal, ensure their survival. Every time they go on the river, however, they risk their lives. In the past decade, hippos have mauled to death 25 of the village’s fishermen & injured many more. In an interview for Agence France-Presse, 25-year-old Ali Fall said that he had been attacked twice since 2014. He reportedly
1: Judith Mukiri & Mary Muthoni
Judith Mukiri & Mary Muthoni, residents of a village in Kenya, were fetching water from the river when they encountered a large hippo. Mukiri, who was pregnant at the time, was the first to be attacked. The beast charged at her & knocked her down. Before turning towards Muthoni, the hippo trampled Mukiri several times. Muthoni was quick on her feet & managed to avoid the animal. She then
TRIP REPORT | Swoop Airlines Boeing 737-800 (EXTRA LEGROOM) Edmonton to Abbotsford
Swoop Airlines is one of two new carriers in Canada offering ultra-low cost flights between 5 airports in Canada, and soon adding 5 new destinations in the United States for the winter season. Swoop is a subsidiary of WestJet, was created in 2017, and started operations just a few months ago with high-density Boeing 737-800s aircraft transferred from their parent company. After finding a great round trip deal that I couldn't pass up, I decided to try them from Edmonton to Abbotsford (as they don't fly from Calgary), paying a little bit extra for one of their extra legroom seats, which you'll soon see were absolutely worth it! Hope you enjoy this new trip report on Canada's newest airline.

Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling Bravo! in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.)
Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality.
Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely.
And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
