WARNING - MI Senator is Sneaking In A Lame Duck Bill
Vince Rogala, Co-owner of Mackinaw Mill Creek Camping, is warning Michigan’s residents/tourists about a bill that he says threatens family-owned hospitality businesses in favor of franchise and large hotel owners.
“Sponsored by our Senator, Wayne Schmidt, Senate bill 703-707 is being rushed through a lame duck session to strengthen the so-called “Community Convention or Tourism Marking Act”, MCL 141.871, et seq. This law gives franchise/large hotel owners who control local visitor bureaus the legal right to use your room tax money to effectively muscle out small local businesses they see as competition,” explained Rogala.
“Most residents/visitors and Michigan’s politicians think their room tax assessment is supposed to promote the ‘entire community.’ However, the hotel lobby made sure that this revenue is only legally required to promote the hotel industry, and to put more “heads in (hotel owner’s) beds.” “They are not required to promote restaurants, gift shops, water parks, golf courses, historic parks, or campgrounds like ours - unless it's beneficial to their hotel business,” says Rogala.
“The new bill doesn’t fix the existing act’s faults - it only strengthens the hotel lobby's’ grip on millions of our tax dollars. Hardly anyone understands they are being personally taxed to benefit hotels. To the best of my knowledge, This handout is not done for any other industry, certainly not for campgrounds - why should hotels have their hands in our pockets?” asked Rogala.
“Right now, this law is allowing the Mackinaw Area Visitors Bureau to impose a membership fee increase on Mill Creek Campground from $500 a year, to over $10,000. A fee unheard of for any other campground in the entire State of Michigan. All three local Mackinaw City campgrounds were financially forced out of membership. All three local Mackinaw City campgrounds were financially forced out of membership in their local Visitors Bureau after receiving notice of the outrageous fee hikes—this feels like economics warfare against my family-run campground,” charges Rogala.
“This will continue happening in communities statewide where a few hotel owners have a monopoly over their local Visitors Bureau and, the new law makes things worse,” warns Rogala.
“This was set up nearly 40 years ago without any real government supervision. When I personally suggested to Senator Schmidt, (who worked in the hotel industry prior to serving in the Senate), that when our government imposes a tax, it should have some type of supervision in place - he seemed disinterested” says Rogala”.
“Any lodging business with 10 or more rooms is required to collect the Room Tax/Assessment. Mackinaw Mill Creek Camping is required to collect tens of thousands of dollars annually on behalf of the local Visitors Bureau (for its cabin rentals),” explains Ryan R. Charles, an attorney for the campground. “Apparently that is not enough, as the Visitors Bureau is now requiring the campground pay thousands of dollars more for a separate “membership fee”, or lose out on advertising through the Visitors Bureau marketing program.”
Rogala is urging his campers and everyone in Michigan to contact their local representatives to let them know how they feel about SB 703-707 and this last-minute attempt to give the hotel industry a big payoff at the expense of Michigan’s visitors and small hospitality businesses.

George Westinghouse changed the face of the world with his inventions, patents, business sense, and personality.
Not a day goes by that we don't use something pioneered by George Westinghouse.
He is the forgotten role model that our country needs today to teach future generations of Americans that hard work and kindness pay off.
George Westinghouse was one of the most successful men in the world. A respected engineer, inventor and America's greatest industrialist.
He was a pioneer of the industrial revolution and played a leading role in turning the United States from a young agrarian society into a modern economic powerhouse.
The name Westinghouse has been a household name the world over for more than 100 years because of one man, his love of machines, and his desire to make the world a better place.
The accomplishments that George Westinghouse had in his lifetime had a major impact on the way we live today.
His work in the railroad industry with the Westinghouse air brake, the electrification of the world with Westinghouse alternating current, him being instrumental in developing natural gas as a fuel, and his impact on the shipping industry with the Westinghouse geared marine turbine engine.
George Westinghouse was known as a good person.
He always had a very good rapport with his workers. There was never a strike at any of the Westinghouse companies all the time he had control of them.
And, you know, that was not common back in those days. He certainly was not motivated by greed or money. He really thought that his accomplishments would benefit mankind. And that alone was a driving force for him. This film also engages in the power struggle between Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla.

Fish Snorkeling and the BLM
How do you count fish in a river? If you're a fish biologist working for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), you start by stuffing yourself into a dry suit and then traipsing through the forests and down to the river. With a snorkel and mask you plunge into the river and slither around in search of Coho, Chinook and Steelhead. These fish like to rest and stay cool in the recently built log jams.
To track how many fish are in the Salmon River, fish biologist Bruce Zoellick and wildlife biologist Corbin Murphy stuff themselves into dry suits and strap on a snorkel to get up-close and personal with the fish. They count fish by species as they snorkel around the log jams and side channels.
Habitat for Coho, Chinook, Steelhead, and a smattering of other fish that consider the “wild and scenic” river their home is getting a remodel. Through a cooperative effort, trees have been pulled up and hauled to the river where engineers have built log jams for fish and other aquatic species.
The Salmon River Restoration Project is a cooperative effort with several partners including the BLM, Freshwater Trust, Nature Conservancy, Portland Water Bureau, and a host of others passionate about aquatic restoration.

Westinghouse: The Life & Time of an American Icon
Westinghouse is a feature-length documentary about the life and times of George Westinghouse, his companies, legacy, personality, partnership with Nikola Tesla, and conflict with Thomas Edison. George Westinghouse is considered America’s greatest industrialist and the only man who would go up against Thomas Edison, and win.
Please subscribe and share for more great documentaries!
His victory over Edison during the Battle of the Currents set the stage for the entire future of electric power. The Westinghouse air brake is considered one of the most important inventions in history. Automobile shock absorbers, railroad signaling and the modern day weekend all owe their existence to the man who Andrew Carnegie called, “A genius who can’t be downed.” Westinghouse may be most famous for the massive companies that he created, but the man called “Uncle George” was a reserved creative giant who went out of his way to treat his workforce with dignity and respect. He was an honest millionaire in the days of robber barons, an optimist in the days of skeptics, and a generous CEO from whom today’s executives can learn.
Narrated by Emmy award winner Carol Lee Espy, a TV/radio host for KDKA Radio, which was the first commercial radio station in the country. Originally owned by Westinghouse until the company’s merger with CBS in 1996, the station made history by airing their first broadcast from the Westinghouse Building in East Pittsburgh in 1920. Carol is also a singer, songwriter, and producer whose voice can be heard on national PBS productions. In 2001 she helped to launch “On Q”, a news magazine at WQED Multimedia in Pittsburgh, and became the voice of WQED. Since then Espy has won two Mid-Atlantic Emmys for her writing and producing and seven nominations for writing/producing and music composition.
Bells 'ring out' on a Sunday - Church Of The Holy Nativity
Church Of The Holy Nativity:
A Parish Church of the Holy Nativity, Knowle in Bristol. They are a Church of England Parish of a modern Catholic tradition in the Diocese of Bristol. Inside Holy Nativity, you’ll find daily worship, a welcoming, supportive community, and space for personal prayer and reflection. Their mission is to seek to be 'open to God, open to each other, open to the community.'
With its distinctive green copper spire, the parish church of the Holy Nativity is visible from many places in Bristol. Just 15 minutes walk from Bristol Temple Meads railway station and located on the A37 Wells Road, the beautiful church of the Holy Nativity, Knowle was first consecrated in 1883 to serve the growing population of Knowle and Totterdown. This church was to replace the Chapel of the Holy Nativity, a plain structure of wood, that had been built previously in July 1865. During the first heavy Blitz on Bristol of the Second World War, the original church building was badly damaged. Rebuilding of the church was completed in 1958. Work was then undertaken in 2004 to completely redecorate the church. As part of this work, talented local artist Mike Long completed the stunning apse mural. They recently celebrated 150 years of Christian witness at Holy Nativity, Knowle.
Bristol:
Bristol is a city and county[4] in South West England with a population of 456,000.[5] The wider district has the 10th-largest population in England.[6] The urban area population of 724,000 is the 8th-largest in the UK.[2] The city borders North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, with the cities of Bath and Gloucester to the south-east and north-east, respectively.
Iron Age hill forts and Roman villas were built near the confluence of the rivers Frome and Avon, and around the beginning of the 11th century the settlement was known as Brycgstow (Old English the place at the bridge). Bristol received a royal charter in 1155 and was historically divided between Gloucestershire and Somerset until 1373, when it became a county of itself. From the 13th to the 18th century, Bristol was among the top three English cities after London in tax receipts. Bristol was surpassed by the rapid rise of Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool in the Industrial Revolution.
Bristol was a starting place for early voyages of exploration to the New World. On a ship out of Bristol in 1497 John Cabot, a Venetian, became the first European since the Vikings to land on mainland North America. In 1499 William Weston, a Bristol merchant, was the first Englishman to lead an exploration to North America. At the height of the Bristol slave trade, from 1700 to 1807, more than 2,000 slave ships carried an estimated 500,000 people from Africa to slavery in the Americas. The Port of Bristol has since moved from Bristol Harbour in the city centre to the Severn Estuary at Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Dock.
Bristol's modern economy is built on the creative media, electronics and aerospace industries, and the city-centre docks have been redeveloped as centres of heritage and culture. The city has the largest circulating community currency in the U.K.—the Bristol pound, which is pegged to the Pound sterling. The city has two universities, the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England, and a variety of artistic and sporting organisations and venues including the Royal West of England Academy, the Arnolfini, Spike Island, Ashton Gate and the Memorial Stadium. It is connected to London and other major UK cities by road and rail, and to the world by sea and air: road, by the M5 and M4 (which connect to the city centre by the Portway and M32); rail, via Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway mainline rail stations; and Bristol Airport.
USA:
The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S.) or America, is a federal republic composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions.[fn 6] At 3.8 million square miles (9.8 million km2) and with over 325 million people, the United States is the world's third- or fourth-largest country by total area[fn 7] and the third-most populous country. The capital is Washington, D.C., and the largest city by population is New York City. Forty-eight states and the capital's federal district are contiguous and in North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east and across the Bering Strait from Russia to the west. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The U.S. territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, stretching across nine official time zones. The extremely diverse geography, climate, and wildlife of the United States make it one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries.[19]
Mail boat pulls along side freighter as storm hits with 40 MPH wind
The Detroit Mail boat J.W. Westcott II was alongside the freighter Algoma Sault Saturday afternoon when sever weather moved through. Mail is transferred to the freighter by a bucket that is lowered by a crewman on the deck of the freighter to the mail boat below. With the storm’s high winds the bucket couldn’t be lowered and the attempt was aborted. A few minutes later, the storm had eased and the delivery was complete.
You can add 40 mile an hour winds and high waves to the Postman’s creed that the mail must get through.
The J.W. Westcott Company has been a family owned Detroit business since 1874 servicing the commercial marine community.
