Brewhouse & Kitchen Bedford are beer tasting record breakers
Bedford's Brewhouse & Kitchen has entered the record book after taking part in the world's largest beer tasting.
The event last night saw around 70 local beer fans join over 1500 across the UK to all taste three beer styles at exactly the same time, making it the biggest beer tasting event ever.
Gemma Crook from the Brewhouse & Kitchen on Bedford's High Street said locals also took part to help make sure all the rules set by the Guinness World Record judges were followed.
And Head Brewer, Richard Cook told us that there's plenty more coming from the local micro-brewers we've some exciting collaboration brews in the works too.

Brew Day - Viking Beer 4, summer edition? (advanced, BIAB)
This thing I call viking beer has a story that spans back a while now. In fact, this is the 8th iteration and it started back when I was still only doing extract brews. Basically my girlfriend found out about this thing called sahti which is an old nordic type of drink and so I took the ingredients and brewed it like a beer, hence viking beer. Along the way I've tried to theme it as viking-y as possible (as you can see in my other videos), but this one is a bit of a departure from that as I'm using pilsner malt as a base ... just to mix it up really.
Recipe?
71% Pilsner
9% Smoked malt
17% Rye
3% Dark Crystal
Magnum @60 to 30 IBUs
2g/L Juniper berries @15
2.5g/L Willamette @0
Nottingham yeast

HOARD
A spherical goldfish bowl filled with water.
Several dry but unfired pots relating to the timeline of the history of pottery making are lined up. These pots are facsimiles of ones on show in the museum which were all made or found in the Southend area.
Each day one pot is immersed in the bowl and allowed to dissolve back into mud.
Each pot contains 'treasure' (kept in bank cash bags) which is revealed as the pot breaks down.
Each successive pot represents a later time period, and may be in a different clay colour to result in stratification of the sediment.
I will record the process in photographs and on video.

My Second Homebrew
Tried my hand at a English Session Ale.
Beginner tips from a beginner:
1. Get yourself a five gallon brew pot. My first brew I was using a 3 gallon pot. I figured since I was only using 2.5 gallons for the boil it wouldn't be a big deal. Wrong. Get the five gallon.
2. Mise En Place Essentially the French term for Get your crap in order. Have everything ready before hand so when one step ends you are ready to begin the next. Avoid scrambling around. Where the Sam Hill are my bettering hops, Beauford?!
3. How to read a Hydrometer. Check this video out:
NOTE: Based on my research I maybe should have added the 1 lb corn sugar when I added my liquid and dry extracts. However my recipe did not say to. In fact the recipe does not say anything about what to do with 1 lb of corn sugar. So was it an omission? Quite possibly. And I think that's why my Starting Gravity was lower at 1.030 instead of 1.040.
Recipe contents are as follows:
Bar Keeps Friend English Session Ale
Yield: 5 Gallons
Starting Gravity: 1.040-1.043
Final Gravity: 1.010 - 1.012

Aloha BrewTube:
In this episode of DJs BrewTube Johnny and I join forces to review Middle Ages Brewing Company Druid Fluid Barleywine. Middle Ages Brewing Company Druid Fluid Barleywine is a year-round serving that clocks in at, 9.5% ABV. Middle Ages Brewing Company describes Druid Fluid Barleywine as:
An epic barleywine, made in the tradition of British Farmhouse Brewing. Lavished with a velvety blend of six different malts this is a warming beer with a lush mouthfeel. The complexities your discriminating palate will detect are ever changing as this barleywine matures. When young, an assertive hop character predominates and with age the beauty of the big malt balance unfolds.
This description sounds quote pleasant. Let see if the beer lives up to its' description. My written review follows:
NOTE: This beer was provide by my buddy averagejoe716.
THANKS A MILLION JOE!!!!!!! YOU DA MAN!!!!!!!!
Middle Ages Brewing Company Druid Fluid Barleywine WRITTEN REVIEW:
A: Middle Ages Brewing Company Druid Fluid Barleywine pours a ruddy orangish brown with red hues when held to the light. Decent glass lacing and plenty of alcohol legs.
S: Earthy and citrus hops up front with a decent amount of sweetness from the malt. Just the slightest touch of alcohol in the nose but nothing off putting.
M: Creamy.
T: Hops upfront, malt in middle, hops in aftertaste. As I drank it, the bitterness took a back-seat and I enjoyed it more. I let two people try it: the first said it tasted purple and the next said it tasted like grapes to him. As I continued to drink it, it did seem to have the puckering effect that drinking grapes does.
O: Middle Ages Brewing Company Druid Fluid Barleywine overall is a well made beer, but the earthy hop flavors will not be for everyone. For the price, there are other beers I'd rather buy. Though it is billed as an English Barleywine it is aggressively hopped and tastes like an American Barelywine dry hopped with traditional English hops. The Achilles' heel of this beer is its lack of sweetness for the style and dominating earthy flavor. This said, if you are into earthy hops, then this may be the Barelywine for you.
Serving Type: 22ozl Bottle
