Montenegro
In the heart of Europe and the Mediterranean, divided from Italy by the Adriatic sea, Montenegro is waiting for you. This small country is only an hour flight away from Rome or Budapest and one and a half hour from Zurich. It's located on southern part of Adriatic sea, in the extension of Croatian part of Adriatic coast, and across Italy.
Budva is a beautiful seaside town with the old medieval settlement at the very heart, great number of hotels, cafes, restaurants and variety of gold sandy beaches... It is located in the center of Montenegrin part of Adriatic coast, 20 km away from Tivat airport and 60 km from Podgorica airport. Budva is only 30 km away from the old Montenegrin capital Cetinje, beautiful old town settled in a mountain valley, where most of the Montenegrin history and culture is and only 2 hours train distance from mountain ski resorts.
Municipality of Budva occupies the central part of Montenegrin coast and the territory of 122 square kilometers. Almost one forth of the attractive coastal zone of Montenegro or 25 km of the coastal line, the municipality takes, and sandy beaches are spread over 11.310 m. The Municipality of Budva counts around 17000 inhabitants. The biggest settlements are Budva with around 10000 inhabitants and Petrovac with around 4000 inhabitants, Sveti Stefan with almost 2000 and Becici with 1500 inhabitants. Along the Riviera around forty settlements, villages and hamlets are threaded.
Becici is located just 3 km away from the old town of Budva and is home to one of the most spectacular beaches in the Mediterranean. In 1936, at the world exhibition in Paris, Becici beach was proclaimed the most beautiful beach of the Mediterranean. A beautiful seaside promenade leads to the old town of Budva.
It is considered to be one of the most beautiful and largest beaches on the south part of the Adriatic Sea. It is sandy, 1950 m long and goes from Zavale to Djevistenja. In 1935 it was rewarded Grand Prix (Golden Palm) in Paris, for the most beautiful beach in Europe. How significant Budva beaches and the quality of their sand were, shows the fact that the Czechs made an exhibition of the sand from these beaches for advertisement purposes. As a part of the background there is a complex tourist settlement. It can be considered to be a bathing zone, sport zone, and a zone for recreation and relaxation in well managed parks, with different sport terrains, and of course a zone of all kinds of accommodation capacities.
Lake Skadar in Podgorica, Montenegro
Lake Skadar also called Lake Scutari, Lake Shkodër and Lake Shkodra — lies on the border of Albania and Montenegro, and is the largest lake in Southern Europe. It is named after the city of Shkodër in northern Albania. It is a karst lake.
The Montenegrin section has been designated as national park, while the Albanian section as a nature reserve and a ramsar site.
Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula with a surface area that seasonally fluctuates between 370 km2 to 530 km2. Lake Skadar itself is located on the western Balkan with approximately two-third 229 km2 of its surface belonging to Montenegro and about one-third 142 km2 to Albania.
The Lake Skadar system is a well-known hotspot of freshwater biodiversity and harbors a highly diverse mollusc fauna.
Lake Skadar is one of the largest bird reserves in Europe, having 270 bird species, among which are some of the last pelicans in Europe, and thus popular with birders. The lake also contains habitats of seagulls and herons.
It is abundant in fish, especially in carp, bleak and eel. Of the 34 native fish species, 7 are endemic to Lake Skadar.
At the scale of Lake Skadar, about 31% of freshwater snails (12 out of 39 species sampled in the lake) are endemic. At the scale of the Lake Skadar basin, 38% (19 species) of the total freshwater gastropod fauna appear to be endemic. There were reliably recorded 50 species of freshwater snails from the Lake Skadar basin. The index of freshwater gastropod endemism is 0.478. With this relatively high value, Lake Skadar exceeds such famous lakes as Lake Malawi and Lake Titicaca. The Lake Skadar is inhabited by five species of Bithynia and it is a hot spot of Bithynia evolution.
There are 17 amphipod species for the Lake Skadar watershed, 10 of them being endemic (mainly from the subterranean habitat).
The small range of many endemic species living in the Lake Skadar system together with ever increasing human pressure make its fauna particularly vulnerable. This becomes even more important in light of ongoing eutrophication, water pollution and sand and gravel exploration activities in the lake and its basin. Research of the phytoplankton community and chlorophyllbased trophic state indices show that the lake is on a betamesosaprobic level of saprobity, which means moderately polluted with organic compounds. Effects of human-induced environmental changes are especially evident for sublacustrine springs, with eutrophication and using for water supplying being the most serious threats.
The 2011 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species includes 21 endemic species from the Lake Skadar basin.

Herceg Novi, Montenegro - Herceg Novi Old Town & Beach
The marvelous city of Herceg Novi is a coastal town in Montenegro, situated at the foot of mountain Orien. Herceg Novi is recognisable by the abundance of mimosa trees and its numerous flights of stairs. It is a ‘city of the sun’, thanks to the large number of sunny days all year round. Full of thick greenery, Herceg Novi hides numerous kinds of tropical flowers. Towards the end of January the town becomes scented with the subtle fragrance of yellow and green mimosas and the festival of Praznik Mimosa is dedicated to this flower. During the summer months many festivals are organised to further enrich the tourist offer of this enchanted town. The town hosts a large summer tradition, the oldest summer music festival in Montenegro - Muzičke skale or Musical Stairs.
The most visited places in Herceg Novi are : Sahat – Kula (1667), Kanli – Kula (1483), Fortress Spanjola (1538), Fortress Forte Mare (1687) and the Serbian orthodox church of Archangel Michael, located at Belavista – the central square of Herceg Novi. It's only a part of the cultural heritage of this renowned town. Must see place is the Orthodox Monastery of Savina. Located in the Savinska Dubrava Grove, this monastery features unique Mediterranean vegetation and provides a breathtaking view of the Bay.
From the sea, the view of Herceg Novi is breathtaking. A tradition of importing seeds, exotic plants, trees and fruits from around the world has transformed Herceg Novi into a veritable botanic garden, carefully tended and expanded over centuries. Built on a series of terraces, this Town Garden is positioned perfectly, with a view of the open sea and two peninsulas, Luštica and Prevlaka.
As in all other town on the Coast, Herceg Novi also has a mild Mediterranean climate; with dry and warm summers and mild winters. Herceg Novi is famous for its SPA and health centers. Nearby Igalo there is a spring of sea mud called Igalskoje blato and also a famous mineral water spring – Igalskoje saltine.
The island of Mamula is located very near from Herceg Novi. You can easily hire a boat to take you there. The island is well-known for its fortress built to protect it from the enemies and that served later on as a prison. In order to fully appreciate each name, where it came from and what it means to this town, tourists should plan a visit spanning several days—this visit would also give tourists the opportunity to explore the city’s past, its soul and its color.
