Sossusvlei / Big Daddy - NAMIBIA

Big Daddy is the Namibian Sand Dune that is climbed the least due to the distance to get there in the Namib-Naukluft National Park. But once you drive past the more famous Dune 45 and see the height, it's understanding why you drove the extra distance.
The choice to drive all the way to the base of Big Daddy, you need a 4x4 and an experience driver as the road is off road sandy road. You can park to the point of no normal road car, and walk to the base, that is the consequences.
What you need for any dune climbing is comfortable shoes that you don't mind walking on a lot of sand, if a camera is essential, may be best to bring a housing protecting case for your camera, or to just take the consequences that you will have to be extra careful to keep sand out of your camera lenses and areas you don't want grains inside your camera, expecialy if you need these pictures. I however didn't have any housing, and I did my best to really cover up with my hands to protect the lenses from the sandy wind.
This unique area of Namibia just a few hours out of Windhoek is just so worth doing. You do need the 2 days to accomplish this.
Happy Travels,

The Big Daddy Dune in Namibia
Via wikipedia:
Big Daddy. Big Daddy is the highest dune in the Sossusvlei area, at about 325 meters. Dune 7 which is the highest dune in Namibia, not Big Daddy, as it is the seventh dune past the Tsauchab river before dune 45 on the right hand side toward Sossusvlei.

We embarked on Sossusvlei Nationalpark biggest dune: Big Daddy - a worthwhile hike, and thanks to our friend Harvey for guiding us there!
Coming down from Big Daddy into Deadsvlei (valley in Sossusvlei) for some obligatory pictures. Luckily for us, a more off beaten track was open on the way back, so Harvey taught us some valuable tricks and tricks on driving 4x4 in sand! ;)

Climbing Big Daddy dune in Namibia
At 325 metres, Big Daddy deserves its name. Climbing it is a must, but be prepared for a heavy trek. Even if you get there when it opens, by the time you reach the summit it will be hot, too. Take enough water and enjoy!

Namibia roadtrip day 10: road to Sossusvlei watch the sunrise over the sand dunes and visit dune 45
Travel with Simon on my Namibia road trip as we head out into the sand dunes at Sossuvlei to see the biggest dunes on earth. See how not to avoid getting stuck in the sand! On the way back to camp at Sesriem we will stop for breakfast at Dune 45.
On day 10 of our Namibia roadtrip we are heading out into the sand dunes at Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert to watch the sunrise.
The Sossusvlei road from the the campsite at Sesriem is through thick sand, if you don't want to get stuck then park your car at the 2x4 car park and take the shuttle. It's cheap and runs about every 15 minutes in open safari vehicles with super flat tyres.
There are a number of dunes you can visit on the way back including Dune 45 (Big Daddy) which is possibly the most photographed individual dune and great for sunset (for viewing the sunset itself rather than the sun setting over the dunes). Another famous dune worth a visit is Dune 5 or Elim Dune.
Sossusvlei forms part of the Namib Naukluft park, but don't get confused, the Namib Naukluft is a very large park and to see the red sand dunes at Sossusvlei or to see Deadvlei you must enter through the park gate at Sesriem. The camp ground known as Namib Naukluft is some 100km away in a different section of the park entirely.
