Silver Mines of Potosi | Most Dangerous Mine in The World! [Potosi / Bolivia]
Empires may rise and fall, but the impact they have on their conquered subjects and the future may continue beyond their passing, for better or for worse. The Spanish Empire, which began in the 15 th century with the colonization of the Americas, and lasted till the 19 th century, left its own mark on its colonies. One of the more tragic legacies of the Spanish Empire is the exploitation of the native population and resources. One such place where this can be seen is the city of Potosí.

Guided tour to Cerro Rico moines in Potosi, Bolivia
Potosi - A trip into Bolivia's most dangerous mine in the world!
Since colonial times, Potosi has been a world famous mining city. The mountain dominating over Potosi city is Cerro Rico, also called by the locals “the mountain which eats men”. During the 16th century, its numerous and profitable mines made it the second largest city in the Americas after Mexico City and primary sponsor to the Spanish Monarchy. It was estimated that from the 16th century more than 8 million miners died due to accidents or diseases caused by exposure to toxic substances.
Even today, the conflicts that emerge relating to the exploitation of mineral resources at Potosi and involve several actors: the Government, mines, social movements, workers, and unions.
Each of the 15.000 miners of Cerro Rico is the member of one of the 16 cooperatives which enjoy a lease contract granted by the Bolivian State.
the workers have no insurance and no right to a pension. Such precarious situation for the miners also places a higher burden on their wives who have to take care of their husbands’ health and their existence becomes even harder if they become a widow. Sad isn’t it?

Bolivia - Potosi Miners Tour
In this video you will understand how hard the life of the miners in Potosi is. To see how demanding their work is and what simple tools they still use was an eye-opener for me.
I have deep respect for these men who chose to work hard and often die fast for the well-being of their families.

The Mountain That Eats Men | Potosí, Bolivia Mine Tour | World's Deadliest Mines
Thanks to Koala Tours in Potosí, Bolivia, we were able to tour one of the most deadly active mines in the world. This was one of the most eye-opening and insane tours I've done in my life.
This is not an all-encompassing video, it just includes information from the tour, which I confirmed from several different articles found online. It does not give information on the economic state of Bolivia, one of the poorest South American countries. Rather, it shows the lengths people today are going today in order to stay alive and feed themselves and their children.
Bolivia is a very beautiful country and I encourage everyone to go on an adventure and explore one of the most interesting places in the world.
Thanks to Ileana Alejandra and Paola Saldivar for helping me translate to make subtitles.
