WHATS HAPPENING MAGAZINE IN JINJA

One of the most adventurous districts in Uganda is Jinja, a district located at the northern end on Lake Victoria in South Eastern Uganda north of the Equator at an altitude of 3,750 feet (1100 meters) above sea level. Jinja is next to Lugazi and near to Kampala the capital city of Uganda.
Jinja is endowed with great weather and waters as its situated on the east bank of the River Nile, where the longest river in the World, the Nile starts its 6,670 km journey from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea. This town has a lot of leisure activities you can engage in to enjoy and have fan with your friends, family or spouse.
The key tourist attractions of the district are,
1. Source of the Nile
The Source of the Nile, the second longest river in the world, marketed as a discovery of one of the first European explorers, namely Speke, is an internationally unique attraction. Commissioning a study to improve it as a tourist attraction and implementing the recommendations would greatly help to enhance its potential as a tourist attraction for both international tourists and domestic excursionists.
2. Bujagali Falls
These are located along the Nile River, within a distance of about 10 kilometers from Jinja municipality. The scenery and rafting activities of Bujagali Falls currently exploited on a small scale have an enormous potential for both excursions and international tourism. The falls also offer opportunity for bird watching.
3. Itanda Falls
Itanda Falls are also found on the Nile, 18 kilometers north-west of Jinja town. The falls offer opportunity for bird watching (especially the weaver birds), camping and picnic outings.
4. Kyabirwa Falls
Located 8 kilometers from Jinja, the falls offer a good scenery and landscape for campsites that is not yet fully exploited. Potential also exists for bird watching and Ethnobotany.
5. Lake Victoria Beaches
The lake’s beaches have been partially exploited for location of tourism developments, especially hotels. These beaches include the sites at Sailing Club, Tilapia Club and Masese. Besides the scenery, the lake can be exploited for water sports, which would attract the domestic, foreign resident and foreign non-resident tourists.
6. Islands in Lake Victoria
These include Samuka, Ndaiga, LwabitookeI and LwabitookeII. Apart from Samuka, the rest of the Islands have not been exploited for tourism purposes despite the existing potential. The existing potential includes boat racing, sport fishing, over-night camping, day excursions and various water sports.
7. Industries
The numerous industries found in Jinja attract excursionists, especially school tours. These include textile (Nytil Picfare), beer (Nile Breweries), sugar (Kakira Sugar Works), steel rolling (Jinja Steel Rolling Mills), grain milling (Jinja Grain Millers) and fish (Masese Fish Factory) and tea processing (Garden Tea) industries.
The hydroelectricity plant at Jinja Owen Falls is also an attraction, especially for the school tours and other domestic excursion groups.
8. Sports
Sports facilities, especially the out-standing Jinja golf pitch and the Bugembe Stadium, offer opportunity for attracting international and national tournaments, whose participants are over-night visitors.
9. Antiquities / Historical sites
A number of historical sites exist in Jinja district. These are: Bujagali ancestral site, for Soga tribe ancestral spirits, at Bujagali falls; the current Busoga King’s palace at Nakabango; Mpumudde hill, the historical meeting place of the Busoga chiefs and the
British colonial Governors. Mpumudde is also the place where King Kabalega, of the Bunyoro Kingdom died.
10. Crafts
Crafts shops, workshops and community groups are common in Jinja town and its suburbs, making mats, baskets and other souvenirs from papyrus and other natural materials.
The souvenir industry has a large potential in Jinja district, if programmes for sustainable use of the raw materials are developed.

JINJA HAILSTORM KILLS EIGHT

Eight people are dead and scores others injured after hailstorms hit Jinja and Kamuli districts in Eastern Uganda. The storm that started at around 7pm and lasted for only half an hour has also left at least five thousand people homeless.

Source of River Nile.

River Nile is well known to be the longest river in the world. Its source starts right from Jinja Uganda, some people may be wondering how the name Nile come about. It’s a famous Greek word simply meaning valley. The river starts from the Northeastern part of Africa. It flows from the surrounding areas close to the equator to the outrageous Safari desert and up to the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The river is about 6696km long and pours its water to over nine countries although it’s more centered to Uganda as well as Egypt. Countries include Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zair and Ethiopia.
This famous river and longest comprises of two major twigs, the white and blue Nile that connects in Khartoum to form the core Nile that is made up of Cataract Nile along with Egyptian Nile. The white Nile is the longest and splits into three parts;1)the lake plateau region,2)The sudd,3)The central Sudan region.
The Nile has contributed a lot to the modernization of countries like Uganda and Egypt. Its history has been the major source as why people have been Uganda. The Nile provides power to Ugandans and it’s the source of energy, the dam gives electricity to country to enable them carry out their daily activities. The banks of the Nile are too fertile to favor agriculture and still provide water to people. Egypt is acknowledged to be a dry land but it has been able to do its farming on irrigation and the fertile soils that are close to the nile. The Nile has also been the source of life to some animals that enjoy water like the crocodiles that occupy the river banks in Egypt. The crocodiles discover in Egypt are stated to be longer and dangerous as well.The source of the Nile is sometimes considered to be Lake Victoria, but the lake has feeder rivers of considerable size. The Kagera River, which flows into Lake Victoria near the Tanzanian town of Bukoba, is the longest feeder, although sources do not agree on which is the longest tributary of the Kagera and hence the most distant source of the Nile itself. It is either the Ruvyironza, which emerges in Bururi Province, Burundi, or the Nyabarongo, which flows from Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda The two feeder rivers meet near Rusumo Falls on the Rwanda-Tanzania border. The source of the Nile from an underwater spring at the neck of Lake Victoria, Jinja. So many activities are done on the Nile for instance water rafting, bungee jumping, Kayaking, boat rides as well as fishing. These have attracted large numbers of tourists that visit Uganda. Once you are here, you get to know that surely Uganda is the peal of Africa. The most exciting element about Egypt is that its historical sites are centered on the Nile bank. Tourists endeavor to pass by and get firsthand information. The best way to catch a closer glimpse of the Nile is by taking up a Nile cruise, you will see all the hidden beauty of the different countries and the experience will be exciting. As you plan for tour to Africa, the Nile must be one of the places to visit before you go back home. It’s a must see beauty of Africa. River Nile is the longest river in Africa with Lake Victoria as its source. The river starts its 6,500km journey to the Mediterranean Sea (Egypt) beside Jinja town (Uganda) and holds the Owen Falls Dam the source of hydro electricity for Uganda with one other dam under construction currently. A tour to the Nile will take you through another life of adventure. There is a golf course unwinding along the banks and the source of the Nile provides a pretty focal point to the flow of water from Lake Victoria’s only outlet. A boat ride out to Samuka Island is another trip of itself, not counting the beautiful fauna you will see along.
Booking a safari downstream on the Nile River brings you to Adrift Nile High Camp with various activities including Bungee jump. A few kilometers further, is Bujagali Falls, the adventurer’s capital with grade-five white water rafting, kayaking, river boarding and mountain-biking. These activities offer a unique way to explore the river banks, passing though farms, forests and villages beside the Nile. Up along the Nile’s course is Lake Kyoga which also feeds the river with fresh water. The course then leads you to the great Murchison Falls, where roars of millions of litres of water dropping form a lullaby. Activities such as spot fishing, game drives and scenic viewing can make your safari to Murchison Falls an exhilarating experience. Murchison Falls National Park named after the Murchison falls provides boat trips to the foot of the falls that enable you to look at hippos, crocodiles and magnificent bird life. Similar to gorilla safaris, the park at the falls organizes nature walks to the top of the falls for trekking chimpanzees. From this point, River Nile flows though Lake Albert to the northern part of Uganda, to Sudan and finally I Egypt were it pours its mass into the Mediterranean Sea.

When you are out travelling, the place you stay can have a big impact on your overall experience. Especially when you are out in the wild in Uganda.

During my recent visit to the country, I stayed at four lodges run by Marasa Africa( It is impressive how a brand can maintain high standards and boast the best of locations for all its properties. There is an old world charm to all their properties, a welcome change from the technology-driven, fast-paced lives that we lead. How would I review their offerings? Here goes…

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THE SETTINGS OF MARASA’S LODGES?
You cannot beat Marasa here. The lodges are all either inside or overlooking forests teeming with wildlife. Surrounded by mountains, lakes and rivers, these properties can be destinations in themselves. Paraa and Chobe lie on the banks of the Nile river full of hippos; in case of Chobe, they can often be spotted crossing hotel lawns and even grazing by the poolside in the evenings. The Silverback lodge overlooks the hilly Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas. Mweya stands on a hill along the Kazinga channel teeming with birdlife, elephants, hippos, crocodiles and many other species.

All of Marasa’s lodges have well laid out and comfortable rooms; the housekeeping is of the highest standards. Everything feels clean, fresh and hygienic.

While Silverback has simple yet comfortable rooms, other lodges can spoil you with different categories of rooms including suites. You could stay in luxury tents at Paraa or even the Queen’s Cottage - this was built specially for a visit by Queen Elizabeth in the 1970s.

FOOD
The chefs at Marasa love their job and know a thing or two about cooking. They can pamper and spoil you with the daily spreads - and even cook to your specific tastes and needs. They are adept at many cuisines - local, European, Italian, Chinese and Indian. And yes, I loved the coffees and the cakes.

GAME DRIVE EXPERIENCE WITH MARASA
You stay in a jungle lodge for the game drives - your hosts have to ensure they are good at this service. Marasa comes up tops here. They have a team of fine naturalists who know the jungles and the ways of its inhabitants well. No one can guarantee any sightings but they do their best in showing you around. They have their own vehicles and drivers that makes for a consistent experience.

It is with great pleasure that we would like to welcome you to our latest documentary: “There is a Chicken in Uganda called Adolf” aka “the Chicken”.

As you will see in the opening texts then this is a true story. It was made with much love but poor planning in the sense that we went down to Uganda with a mission in mind, but not a faint idea what to expect. Two weeks later we returned dazed and confused with 86 hours of footage, a soul full of inspiration and new found love for a country and it´s people. We then spent the next 5 months trying to figure out what actually happened and how to best tell that story without confusing the people we wanted to share this story with.

We hope that after watching this film that you feel what we felt when we returned. Which was both inspired, as well as a little more enlightened, as well as highly entertained and with a huge smile on our faces sitting on top of a big warm heart.

We also hope that you might take a moment to reflect on who you are, how lucky you are to be alive and that perhaps if you have the opportunity, to help out in any way you can to make our lovely planet a much more enjoyable place to live for all beings on board.

Bungee Jump Into The Nile: Hannah and Buddy's Adventures!

Week Snapshot:

It started with a hippo rubbing its body against our tent, eating all our grass, and keeping me scared stiff all night, while on a Safari, two nights in a row...

It was filled with crocodiles, and elephants, and amazing giraffes, and crazy looking birds, and termite bites, wart hogs everywhere, monkeys and baboons crawling all over the place, a majestic lion, tons of gazelles and water buffalo, trekking rhinos, and beautiful Murchison Falls...

And it ended with a thrill of a lifetime: Rafting the Nile, bungee jumping into it's source, standing on the equator, crushing Buddy at put-put golf (It made up for the 6 cribbage games he skunked me in... in a row!) And during all this, getting around, somewhat in one piece, with public transport all over this beautiful country... (that's an adventure in its self).

It was full. Full of adventure. Lots of reading and rest. Lots of exploring and traveling. Lots of time with Buddy! This video is a snippet of the FALL! And this 145 foot fall was, to me, my falling AFRESH... my lesson on FAITH... and my seal of TRUST... not in the rope, or the guys who tied my ankles up, but as a symbol to God, as a symbol to myself... A NEW STEP OF FAITH... fall free, fall new, FALL AFRESH!
