Top Trophy Panfish Destinations Across the Upper Midwest
Trophy panfish are widely available, although they don’t just grow big everywhere. Larger waters tend to produce the biggest perch, while smaller, off-the-beaten-path lakes tend to put up the largest bluegills. Crappies can achieve large size in numerous lakes as long as they’re not over-harvested; a common problem with panfish that catch-and-release and selective harvest can resolve.
Here’s a quick tour of the Upper Midwest’s finest panfish destinations for outsized bluegills, sunfish, crappies and yellow perch:
DAKOTAS
Let’s begin in the Dakotas with the Missouri River system, particularly Lake Oahe. Best known as a walleye Mecca, Oahe currently has a bumper crop of crappies that are easily caught on traditional walleye tactics like bottom bouncing with minnows. Numerous glacial lakes in the eastern Dakotas are known for big panfish, including jumbo yellow perch. Many of these water were formerly shallow sloughs that exploded in productivity during high water conditions.
In North Dakota, the Lake Audubon area near Coleharbor is a crappie hotbed. A bit farther east, Devils Lake is world famous for giant perch, particularly through the ice.
MINNESOTA
Crossing into western Minnesota, a large number of fertile natural lakes produce outsized crappies and bluegills. The area from Alexandria stretching up to Park Rapids has hundreds of waters where large panfish abound.
In northern Minnesota, Leech Lake is a top producer of large crappies, bluegills and perch. Huge Lake Winnibigoshish is well-knowing for catching large perch right along with the lake’s abundant walleyes, with smaller surrounding waters being home to oversized crappies and bluegills. Lake Vermilion to the northeast holds large schools of crappies ripe for catching, as well.
WISCONSIN
On the Minnesota/Wisconsin border, Lake Onalaska is popular with ice fisherman for panfish. Giant Lake Winnebago is currently undergoing a crappie EXPLOSION with fish being caught in traditional walleye areas in the main lake.
MICHIGAN
Lake Gogebic in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has long been a favorite for yellow perch. To the east, harbor mouths rimming Lake Michigan, Huron, St. Clair, and Erie are once again producing good numbers of large perch. Following a downturn in the population a decade ago. Anglers fish off piers and break waters during spring when fish are relatively shallow.

STORYLINE:
Swollen rivers and streams pushed to heights not seen in nearly a quarter-century in the US state of Missouri on Wednesday, amid fears that already dire conditions could worsen.
Floodwaters began spilling over the federal levees protecting some communities and farmland.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced on Wednesday that nine levees had been topped by water.
However, some of those earthen barriers were meant to protect farmland rather than populated areas so it wasn't immediately clear how many homes were in jeopardy.
Nearly a dozen other levees were considered at risk for possible significant distress but were holding as of Wednesday evening, the Army Corps said.
But people were moving out just in case, including the St. Louis suburb of Valley Park, where Mayor Michael Pennise ordered mandatory evacuations for 350 to 400 homes and dozens of businesses in the section of town near the fast-rising Meramec River.
At least 20 deaths over several days in Missouri and Illinois were blamed on flooding, mostly involving vehicles that drove onto swamped roadways, and at least two people were still missing Wednesday.

This ranch is located on Lyons Creek just south of Wolf Creek, Montana. Consisting of 3,041 deeded acres and 1,440 acres of Montana State lease. The ranch has 2 miles of Lyons Creek flowing through it as well as 1 mile of South Fork of Lyons creek, with numerous springs are also on the property. Excellent Brook Trout and Cut Throat fishing, elk, deer, black bear, mountain lions, goats, big horn sheep, moose, wolves and the occasional grizzly bear habitat this area. The Lyons Creek Ranch and the O'Connell ranch are main corridors for big game animals moving from the Rocky Mountains to the Big Belt Mountain Range. Mountains near and on the ranch run form 7,031 feet in elevation, Mitchell Mountain, to the drainage at 4,100 feet; with lots of pine trees, fir trees and meadows. A quote from the Fish and Game says, Critical security area for all big game in the Western 2/3rds of hunting district 339 and the southern portion of hunting district 423. The O'Connell Ranch could also be purchased which would add an additional 4,154 deeded acres and 3,830 acres State Leased land. Both ranches have the same Fish and Game conservation easement. Basically it allows hunters to hunt the 2 ranches from Sept. 1st through Nov. 30th. They can only drive on 1 road, can not camp, no fires, and can use horses. However you as the owner can, of course use all the roads and 2 ranches have quite a network of logging roads that are excellent 4-wheel riding, at least 50 miles of roads available to only the owners. A map of the hunters road is included for you to view. The gate on Lyons Creek road is locked the rest of the year. The easement does allow for mining and hydrocarbon exploration and logging. The only thing it does is prohibit subdividing the land, although each ranch is allowed 2 - 5 acres homesites. No restrictions on size or numbers of outbuildings. The easement also allows the rebuilding of any structures that are not for habitation. All in all, it is not too restrictive and thus could be put into a stricter easement. Fishing is not mentioned in the easement and Lyons creek is whirling disease free. Lots of places to build ponds, etc. If you are looking for a very large easy to maintain property this could be it. Also if you want a piece of property in Western Montana to put into a stricter conservation easement, this could be it. As can be seen on the maps, both ranches and the lease land fit very well together to make up a fairly square piece of property of about 22 square miles. If you want an in depth look plan on 2 days, it is that big. The pictures in this brochure can not even show the beauty, you must see for yourself.
Flooding in Nebraska and Iowa, USA (March 15, 2019)
Crazy Flooding in Nebraska and Iowa, USA (March 15, 2019). Current flooding in Nebraska, Iowa rivals most devastating years as multiple rivers flood. A few rivers have hit record levels overnight as National Weather Service meteorologists caution that water levels will continue to rise for the next several days. Overnight, the Missouri River at Plattsmouth hit a record high of 37.15 feet, surpassing the previous high of 36.73 feet in 2011. The Platte River at near Leshara reached 12.23 feet, beating the last historical crest of 11.84 feet.
These rising river levels mean the unthinkable is possible: that 2019 could be the year that two terrible flood years — the devastating flooding on the Elkhorn River in 2010 and the record-shattering flood of 2011 on the Missouri River — wrap into one.

EPA and Army Propose New Waters of the United States Definition
NOTE: For captions for the first few minutes of the event please click the CC button to turn them on. Open captions begin at 2:24.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of the Army are proposing a clear, understandable, and implementable definition of “waters of the United States” that clarifies federal authority under the Clean Water Act. Unlike the Obama administration's 2015 definition of “waters of the United States,” the proposal contains a straightforward definition that would result in significant cost savings, protect the nation’s navigable waters, help sustain economic growth, and reduce barriers to business development.
