Big Red Simpson Desert Australia by Hilux
Going over Big Red from West to East in diesel Hilux's. We went over first go with tyre pressures on about 20 psi and in first gear high range. I will admit that the track was not chopped up and in quite good condition as there had been very little traffic through. We had climbed tougher dunes further back in the desert.

The Earthcruisers Big Red Birdsville QLD
Earthcruiser's take on ‘Big Red’, the the name is given to a particular sand dune that marks the symbolic edge of the Simpson Desert.
Situated approximately 35 kms west of Birdsville and on private property, Big Red (original name Nappanerica) stands well over 30 metres tall and is part of a series of around 1,140 parallel sand dunes stretching across the desert. The dune is red from rusting iron particles in the sand and provides a challenge for any 4WD enthusiast but not Earthcruiser's.

6 things to do in Birdsville, Outback Queensland
Bordering the Simpson Desert deep in the heart of the Australian Outback you'll find Queensland's most south-western town, Birdsville.
The usually quiet town with a population of 104 people, is transformed every July and September as Birdsville rolls out its big red dirt carpet to over 10,000 people who flock to the Outback Queensland town for the iconic Big Red Bash and the Birdsville Races.
Birdsville has everything for your true bucket list-worthy Aussie outback experience. Grab a beer from the Birdsville Pub, catch a sunset from the stunning 'Big Red' sand dune, try a famous camel pie from the Birdsville Bakery and stand up paddleboard in the milky Birdsville Billabong.

Big Red Birdsville Desert Ride Part 1 of 3 - Australia CRF1000D KTM1190R
The Meerkats (Quin and Sylvia) ride west from the coast, out to Birdsville Qld Australia. Part 1 of 3. We depart 22nd September 2018 one week after the Birdsville Races (planned as the best time of year, Spring, and to avoid the races crowds) - It's a 1650km trip west just to get there. Our goal is to ride the biggest dune in the Simpson Desert called Big Red. We journey to Birdsville over 5 days stopping to soak up the outback Channel Country at Coopers Creek Windorah. Some people say it's flat and boring, but we soon find the vast country fascinating us by virtue of its minimalism. The less there is the more we focus on the wildlife and the landscapes we encounter. In the movie i try to convey the landscape and its expanse by showing the variety and the way a biker sees their world.
Having owned a Husqvarna 300cc 2-Stroke enduro bike for a while we also plan to ride the Husky on the dunes which requires a fully road registered and road legal bike, as the famous dune forms part of the public roads system in Queensland. So it's towed by Porsh in the Nissan Patrol. Jays decides he wants to see the desert but will only go in his Landrover Defender 90. A side benefit is we will be able to recover our own bikes if one breaks down, or the 4WD can recover each other. However the trip unfolds differently and the bikes work fine, and we gradually realise we bikers will have to support one of the other vehicles which does not handle the trip as well as we do. this is Part 1 of 3 episodes.
