#bikingwithbliss between two states on the Mississippi's longest ped/bike bridge
This is the Big River Crossing ( which connects Memphis, Tennessee with West Memphis, Arkansas.
It was built on an existing rail bridge (the Harahan Bridge) and opened in 2016, replacing a wood-plank roadway that had been closed since 1949. This video has more information on the bridge's history:
I was really impressed with this bridge. The path is wide and comfortable, and there are great views of the Memphis skyline and the incredibly fast-moving Mississippi. It's much more pleasant than bridges next to car traffic; the traffic on the nearby Memphis-Arkansas Bridge is far enough way to not cause any issues.
I started out walking across the bridge with family. On the walk we saw a lot of people biking by, many of them on bikeshare bikes. When we got to the Arkansas side we saw a bikeshare docking station with five bikes on it... but none of them worked. The bikes this bcycle system uses are similar to the Portland biketown and other dockless bikeshare systems use, where you rent the bike using a system on the bike itself and you take the lock with you. As in Portland we had some issues with the system; some of them wouldn't turn on, one indicated it was waiting for repair, one looked like it worked but wasn't responsive. Disappointed we walked back to Tennessee. On the Tennessee side there were more bikes and after trying a few I was about to give up when I finally got one to work, so I was able to bike to Arkansas and back to Tennessee. Once I had the bike checked out it was pretty good--I appreciated that it had a timer on the display so I always knew how much time I had left.
We returned to see the bridge's light display at night from a distance. It'd be an interesting experience to cross it while the light show was going on.

FBI asks agencies to watch Memphis, Tenn. bridges
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- The FBI asked law officers assigned to areas around the Mississippi River bridges at Memphis, Tennessee, to help keep an eye on the spans after a vague threat came in warning that one would be blown up.
FBI spokesman Christopher M. Allen said Tuesday from Washington the threat was unsubstantiated. The agency's Memphis office alerted local police as a matter of routine but there was no specific threat to address, Memphis Special Agent D.O. Little said Tuesday.
It was just an anonymous threat with no actual intelligence of an attack, Little said.
Two cross-country routes traverse the Mississippi River at Memphis - Interstates 40 and 55 - and both remained open. Each bridge carries about 40,000 vehicles daily.
The FBI advisory, sent Monday, cited a threat to the Memphis-Arkansas bridge from an Islamic State cell in Memphis. The I-55 bridge is known as the Memphis and Arkansas Bridge but Little said Tuesday the threat was interpreted as applying to both bridges.
The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management said the threat had not reached a level requiring it to put anyone on stand-by, as it would if bad weather was approaching.
We're not on any heightened alert, spokesman Rick Fahr said. He said threats that include specifics are rare.
Highway officials reviewed contingency plans.
This is no different than it is in the event of an earthquake or an ice storm, said Danny Straessle, a spokesman for the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department.

Places to see in ( Memphis - USA )
Memphis is a city on the Mississippi River in southwest Tennessee, famous for the influential strains of blues, soul and rock 'n' roll that originated there. Elvis Presley, B.B. King and Johnny Cash recorded albums at the legendary Sun Studio, and Presley’s Graceland mansion is a popular attraction. Other music landmarks include the Rock 'n' Soul Museum, Blues Hall of Fame and Stax Museum of American Soul Music.
Memphis is the second largest city in the state of Tennessee and the second largest metropolitan area in the state after Nashville. The state rests in the southeastern portion of the United States. Memphis, with a population totaling more than 653,350 as of 2013, is also the county seat for Shelby County. The city's claims to fame include Graceland, the mansion Elvis Presley lived in during his later years. Maybe more importantly, Memphis is considered by many to be the home of blues music.
Memphis is an older city that has been through a lot. With that said, the city has developed a rugged yet, colorful sense of character that locals identify with. A lovely mix of old and new, Memphians have worked hard to build a vibrant community while keeping the city's old-time charm. Memphis has much more to offer than just Graceland with its lively neighborhoods and constant renewal.
Although downtown Memphis has experienced quite a rebirth and renewal in the last few years, the center of the city is older and while new development is hard to find, revitalization of old areas is beginning to take shape. Areas such as Beale Street and Mud Island have become relatively safe and citizens once again have a vested interest in making downtown safe, exciting, and a great place to visit and relax after decades of abandonment.
Whether visiting or moving to the area, from May to October make it well worth your while to visit the Memphis Farmers Market which formed and began in 2006 - it is one of the brightest shining stars of the early Spring, Summer, and through Mid-Autumn. A word of caution: Memphis is extremely hot in the summertime, and the humidity can make you feel even hotter! Those who have trouble tolerating high heat and humidity may wish to avoid visiting during July or August.
Memphis has a certain baroque, ruined quality that's both sad and beguiling. Though poverty is rampant – Victorian mansions sit beside tumbledown shotgun shacks (a narrow style of house popular in the South) and college campuses lie in the shadow of eerie abandoned factories – whiffs of a renaissance are in the air. Neighborhoods once downtrodden, abandoned and/or otherwise reclaimed by kudzu – South Main, Binghampton, Crosstown and others – are being reinvented with kitschy boutiques, hipster lofts and daring restaurants, all dripping with Memphis' wild river-town spirit.

Crossing the Harahan Bridge Bike Trail
The Harahan is an operational, 100+ year old railroad bridge over the Mississippi River in Memphis, Tennessee. With the development of the automobile, the need grew to cross this wide river by car. As a result, the bridge was retrofitted with a single lane roadway hanging off the side. Only wide enough for Model T’s and other early cars, it eventually became too dangerous for motor vehicles, leading to the decommissioning and removal of the roadway. Decades later, it was suggested that the roadway’s remaining skeleton frame was suitable for a bike and pedestrian trail. Today, this is the only bike trail connecting Arkansas with Tennessee.
