Kruger Park (South Africa) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Kruger Park in South Africa.
South Africa is famous for its exceptional natural beauty and amazing variety of flora and fauna and in this respect the Kruger National Park is somewhat akin to a modern day Noah's Ark.The park's Black Rhinos were once an endangered species due to ruthless poaching but now the park is a welcome sanctuary for these wonderful creatures and it also protects the Hyena as well as the African continent's most endangered predator, the Wild Dog. In the dry season most of the park's wildlife gathers around a few remaining waterholes and it is then the perfect time to observe the animals at close quarters. The fascinating fauna that is to be found in South Africa along with its incredible range of wildlife, scenery and unique ambience, deserves far more than just a flying visit. Since its inauguration a century ago this wildlife park has developed into a well organised enterprise with around six hundred employees who are responsible for maintaining the exceptional Kruger National Park, one of the last and most remarkable animal paradises on Earth.

Culture war brews over S.African golden rhino figurine
For years, South Africa's apartheid government ignored the significance of a golden rhino figurine that provides undeniable proof of a sophisticated society existing before white men arrived. But since the end of racist rule in 1994, the stunning object -- just 15 millimetres (six inches) long and more than 700 years old -- has become a defining symbol of precolonial civilisation in South Africa.

South Africa-First day at Africa on Foot Safari
Kudu in Ethiopia Addis Ababa
Kudu
The kudus are two species of antelope of the genus Tragelaphus:
• Lesser kudu, Tragelaphus imberbis, of eastern Africa
• Greater kudu, Tragelaphus strepsiceros, of eastern and southern Africa
Etymology
The name of the animal was imported into English in the 18th century from isiXhosa iqhude, via Afrikaans koedoe.
Habitat
Lesser kudus come from the savanna near Acacia and Commiphora shrubs. They have to rely on thickets for protection, so they are rarely seen in the open. Their brown and striped pelts help to camouflage them in scrub environments.
Behavior
Like many other antelope, male kudus can be found in bachelor groups, but they are more likely to be solitary. Their dominance displays tend not to last long and are generally fairly peaceful, consisting of one male making himself look big by making his hair stand on end. When males do have a face-off, they will lock their horns in a competition to determine the stronger puller; kudus' necks enlarge during the mating season for this reason. Sometimes two competing males are unable to unlock their horns and, if unable to disengage, will die of starvation or dehydration. Males are seen with females only in the mating season, when they join in groups of 5–15 kudus, including offspring. Calves grow very quickly and at six months are fairly independent of their mothers.
A pregnant female will leave the herd to give birth to a single offspring. She will leave the newborn lying hidden for 4–5 weeks while coming back only to nurse it, which is the longest amount of time for any antelope species. Then the calf will start meeting its mother for short periods. At 3 or 4 months, the calf will be with its mother constantly, and at about six months they will permanently join the group.
When threatened, the kudu will often run away rather than fight. Wounded bulls have been known to charge the attacker, hitting the attacker with their sturdy horn base rather than stabbing it. Wounded females can keep running for many miles without stopping to rest for more than a minute. They are great kickers and are capable of breaking a wild dog's or jackal's neck or back. They are good jumpers and can clear a 5-foot fence from a standing start.
Diet
Kudus are browsers and eat leaves and shoots. In dry seasons they eat wild watermelons and other fruit for their liquid content and the natural sugars that they provide. The lesser kudu is less dependent on water sources than the greater kudu.
Predators and threats
Many predators, such as lions and leopards, African wild dogs, hyenas, and pythons, hunt kudu and their young. Kudu numbers are also affected by humans hunting them for their meat, hides and horns, or using their habitats for charcoal burning and farming.
Kudus were highly susceptible to the rinderpest virus (now eradicated after a vaccination program in domestic cattle), and many scientists think recurring epidemics of the disease reduced kudu populations in East Africa.
Kudus are highly susceptible to rabies in times of extended drought. They have been known to enter farm houses and other buildings when infected. Infected animals appear tame and have a distinct frothing at the mouth. They are fearless and bulls may sometimes attack humans who get too close to them.[citation needed]
Meat
Kudu meat is similar to venison (deer), with a slight gamey, liver-like flavor. It is a very dry and lean meat, so it needs to be cooked carefully to avoid drying it out and making it difficult to eat. When prepared correctly, it can be very healthy because of its low fat content.[1]
Use in music
A kudu horn, used by Yemenite Jews as a shofar for the holiday ofRosh Hashanah.
A kudu horn is a musical instrument made from the horn of the kudu. A form of it is sometimes used as a shofar in Jewish ceremonies. It is mostly seen in the Western world in its use as a part of the Scouting movement's Wood Badge training program which, when blown, signals the start of a Wood Badge training course or activity.
A horn of this shape, when used by soccer fans, is called kuduzela (a portmanteau of kudu and vuvuzela). The kudu, tholo in the language Setswana or Venda language, is a tribal totem of the Barolong and Batlhaping people of Botswana and South Africa.
Use in sport
In the sport of kudu dung spitting, contestants spit pellets of kudu dung, with the farthest distance reached being the winner. The sport is mostly popular among the Afrikaner community in South Africa, and a world championship is held each year.[2]

Rob The Ranger is a proudly South African YouTuber
The purpose of the Rob The Ranger Wildlife Videos YouTube channel is to show what it is like to experience seeing wild animals on an African safari. Nature Documentaries are often highly edited to tell a story, wildlife safaris are not, and the idea here is to show the wildlife sightings the way they were seen. Safari tours in Africa are generally suitable for all ages and this channel can be considered an educational channel about incredible nature, some scenes in the nature videos may be more graphic than people are used to but this is the reality of nature and is what you would see if you were present on such a safari in person. Safaris in Kenya, South Africa, or any other African country are an unrivalled experience for anyone with a passion for nature, wildlife photography, and travel. Hopefully the animal videos on this channel can provide a glimpse into what the nature experience is like and encourage more people to take a wildlife safari one day.

SOUTH AFRICA: GAME PARK AUCTIONS SURPLUS ANIMALS
English/Nat
The biting cold of South Africa's winter has not detered scores of people from flocking to the Umfolozi Game Park to purchase wild animals.
The auction, which is the world's biggest animal sale, was held at the park in the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal this weekend.
The animals didn't seem bothered by the unusual attention.
The world's biggest animal sale has netted just under two million U-S dollars this year.
Buyers were given two days to view the animals before the auction got under way on Saturday.
The event is held as a fund-raiser by the province's Nature Conservation Service, in which surplus animals are put under the hammer.
The first game auction was held in 1989 and the idea took off immediately with many of the animals being sent to reserves throughout the world.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The prime reason for the auction is a management tool. It is a way for us to dispose of surplus game animals. That's the primary reason for holding it. A very wonderful spin-off of course is the fact that we get a bit of money from the animals we sell. But a third reason for having it is that is enables members of the public to buy from us top quality animals to boost the quality of their own stocks on private property.
SUPER CAPTION: Jeff Gaisford, KwaZulu-Natal Conservation Service
The grand prize at the auction was a white rhino bull which went for 34-thousand dollars.
A female rhino and her calf fetched the top price of 45-thousand dollars.
On sale for the first time was a pair of hippo which sold for nearly eight-and-a-half thousand dollars.
Ostriches have become internationally sought after, and two were sold for 267 dollars each.
This year there were mainly local buyers at the auction who were looking to increase the stocks on their own farms, in order to be able to cash in on the foreign tourist market.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We are busy building our game lodge which will be ready within six months and then we will be advertising overseas and getting overseas tourists to come in which is very good for the country.
SUPER CAPTION: Elvin Krull, Private Game Farm Owner
Most foreign tourists visiting South Africa go to see the wildlife and the wide open spaces.
Eco-tourism is worth between two-and-a-half to three billion (b) dollars a year for the South African economy.

Saving Rhinos from South Africa
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park received some big arrivals Thursday evening: six southern white rhinos arrived via a chartered DC11 flight from South Africa. The female rhinos, between four and seven years of age, were relocated to the Safari Park from private reserves in South Africa as part of a collaborative conservation effort to save the critically endangered northern white rhino and all rhino species from extinction.
A member of the Safari Park animal care staff flew to South Africa earlier this week to accompany the rhinos, along with a veterinarian from South Africa, on the 22-hour flight from Johannesburg to San Diego. The rhinos were transported in individual crates specially designed for the transport. Upon arrival in San Diego, the crates were loaded onto two flat bed trucks and driven to the Safari Park’s new Rhino Rescue Center, built specifically for the new arrivals. Once at the Park, a team of veterinarians and keepers unloaded the animals into fenced yards, where they will remain under a mandatory quarantine for at least 30 days.
“We are beyond thrilled to welcome these southern white rhinos to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and our new Rhino Rescue Center”, said Steve Metzler, interim associate curator of mammals, who accompanied the animals from South Africa to San Diego. “The animals did extremely well during the flight, eating normally and sleeping a good portion of the long trip. Our priority now is to ensure the rhinos are comfortable and acclimating to their new surroundings.”
San Diego Zoo Global has been working for decades, along with other accredited zoos, to keep a sustainable population of rhinos safe under human care while working to protect them in sanctuaries in the wild. To further this commitment, the Rhino Rescue Center was recently built to house the new southern white rhinos, establishing the Safari Park as a sanctuary to protect these rhinos—at a time when an average of three rhinos are killed each day in the wild by poachers.
Poaching of all rhino species has reached critically high numbers in recent years. A rhino is poached every 8 hours in South Africa. Rhinos are poached for their horns; their horn is made of keratin, the same thing as our fingernails. At this rate of poaching, rhinos could become extinct in 15 years.
The northern white rhino is the most critically endangered rhino with only four individuals remaining in the world. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is home to Nola, a female 41-year-old northern white rhino. Three other northern white rhinos (one male and two females) are in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya.
The six female southern white rhinos will be a part of San Diego Zoo Global’s science-based rhino conservation efforts to save the northern white rhino. Researchers at the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, along with collaborators, are developing reproductive techniques to develop northern white rhino embryos (from cells stored in the Frozen Zoo) to be implanted in the southern white rhinos who will serve as surrogate mothers. There are many challenges ahead, but researchers are optimistic a northern white rhino calf could be born from these processes within ten to fifteen years. These technologies may also be applied to other rhino species, including the critically endangered Sumatran and Javan rhino.
San Diego Zoo Global has one of the most successful rhino breeding programs in the world. To date, a total of 94 southern white rhinos, 68 greater one-horned rhinos and 14 black rhinos have been born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
For more information on San Diego Zoo Global’s rhino conservation efforts visit sandiegozoo.org/rhinorescue.
