Big South Fork Scenic Railway, Stearns and Barthell Kentucky
Kentucky And Tennessee Railroad short line railroad. We spent two nights in the cabins at Barthell Ky, near Stearns. You will see what it is like to ride the train to Blue Heron and back, including going through a tunnel. While in Blue Heron, you can get off the train and walk on top of the old coal tipple over the river. They blow the air horn when it is time to reboard for the ride back to Stearns. This passenger train has open air cars and a caboose that you can ride in. Locomotive rides are also available. There are hiking trails and awesome cabins that you can stay in. This is a very historic area and this railroad branch line connects into the Norfolk Southern Railroad main line called the Rathole. Filmed June 2, 2013. Please subscribe to my channel! Thanksgiving in the Woods!-Cumberland Falls Overnight Backpacking
Join us for another overnight backpacking trip on Thanksgiving day! For this trip we headed to Cumberland Falls in Corbin Kentucky. We started out at the impressive Niagara Falls of the south before heading off on the Sheltowee Trace trail for some Thanksgiving/black Friday camping. Mikka the adventure pug leads the way!
Hiking in a twenty pound turkey is a little unrealistic, right?? We play more of our interpretation game (it's clearly Loch Ness!) on our way out to Dog Slaughter Falls, yes that's really the name! We take the opportunity to re-name the falls because Mikka didn't care for that name. Check out our 100% effective bear proof overnight food storage technique.

SUMMARY
=======
The White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) is a federally managed forest contained within the White Mountains in the northeastern United States. It was established in 1918 as a result of the Weeks Act of 1911; federal acquisition of land had already begun in 1914. It has a total area of 750,852 acres (303,859 ha) (1,225 sq mi). Most of the WMNF is in New Hampshire; a small part (about 5.65% of the forest) is in the neighboring state of Maine. While often casually referred to as a park, this is a National Forest, used not only for hiking, camping, and skiing, but for logging and other limited commercial purposes. The WMNF is the only National Forest located in either New Hampshire or Maine. Most of the major peaks over 4,000 feet high for peak-bagging in New Hampshire are located in the National Forest. Over 100 miles (160 km) of the Appalachian Trail traverses the White Mountain National Forest. In descending order of land area the forest lies in parts of Grafton, Coos, and Carroll counties in New Hampshire, and Oxford County in Maine.
The Forest Supervisor's office is located in Campton, and there are three ranger districts: the Pemigewasset District, with offices in Campton; the Androscoggin District, based in Gorham; and the Saco District, based in Conway. Furthermore, there are several visitor centers, including those located at Lincoln, Campton (off Interstate 93), and Lincoln Woods (on the Kancamagus Highway). The National Forest consists of three discontinuous areas. The area to the west of Franconia Notch (a narrow north-south valley primarily within a state park) consists of the regions surrounding Cannon Mountain, Kinsman Mountain, and Mount Moosilauke (though the majority of Moosilauke is privately owned). The main body of the National Forest includes the Presidential Range and many other ranges - most notably, the Franconia, Twin, Bond, Sandwich, Willey, and Carter-Moriah ranges. An exclave of the Forest lies to the north of U.S. Route 2 in Stark and Randolph, New Hampshire.
It is home to wildlife species including bald eagle, raccoon, beaver, white-tailed deer, moose, black bear, coyote, peregrine falcon, Canadian lynx, river otter, bobcat, gray and red foxes, fisher, mink, and porcupine.
Six designated Federal Wilderness Areas exist within the Forest: the 27,380-acre (11,080 ha) Presidential Range/Dry River Wilderness, the 5,552-acre (2,247 ha) Great Gulf Wilderness, the 45,000-acre (18,000 ha) Pemigewasset Wilderness, the 35,800-acre (14,500 ha) Sandwich Range Wilderness, the 12,000-acre (4,900 ha) Caribou/Speckled Mountain Wilderness, and the 23,700-acre (9,600 ha) Wild River Wilderness. These areas are protected from logging and commercial industries and are used solely for recreational and scientific purposes. They were formed under the Federal Wilderness Protection Act of 1984, and its amendments. The New England Wilderness Protection Act of 2006 increased the Sandwich Range Wilderness to its present size and created the Wild River Wilderness area.
Because of its beauty, its proximity to major metropolitan areas, its 1,200 miles (1,900 km) of hiking trails, 23 campgrounds, and the presence of a large number of ski areas within or near its boundaries, the WMNF is one of the most visited outdoor recreation sites east of the Mississippi.

Cumberland River Trip, Hiking and Canoeing, July 2016
Cumberland River is easily one of the greats when it comes to canoeing and kayaking in Kentucky. While it takes us about 3 hours to drive there, it is worth it every year. This trip in particular was full of beauty, excitement, and nature at it's best: testy. Severe floods were a problem in most areas of Kentucky during this month. Not only was there a storm when we first put in, but rain was always coming and going as it pleased. The river, while not dangerous, was 3 feet higher than normal, causing eddies and class 1 rapids that we didn't expect.
We did have our first encounter with a black bear this trip. Slowly but surely the black bear have repopulated from being endangered for many years, and honestly I couldn't be happier with this news. Black bear tend to be very skittish and non-aggressive if you know what to do. We made tons of noise, sealed our food overnight, and made our presence very aware. Strangely, the next morning after tracking it away from our campsite for just a small bit, we discovered it had slept nearby maybe 150 yards from our campsite, and never bothered us. While we still considered ourselves lucky, it goes to show that basic knowledge of how to handle black bear is necessary to all.
I hope you enjoy this video. I apologize for the soundtrack being off... While I had intended to post this much earlier, I found some sort of formatting error to all the video clips and lost my original Movie Maker file to be able to edit. So I gave up and posted as-is. I feel I still got some great footage of the river and surrounding areas, though.
Some geological features: Cumberland Falls, Eagle Falls, several overlooks, an abandoned theme park ghost town, creek offshoots, and more.

SUMMARY
=======
Uwharrie National Forest (locally yoo-WAH-ree) is a federally designated national forest region located primarily in Montgomery County, but also extending into Randolph and Davidson counties in south central North Carolina. It is the smallest of the four National Forests in North Carolina, with a total area of 50,645 acres (204.95 km2). About 79% of its acreage is in Montgomery County. The forest is managed together with the other three North Carolina National Forests (Croatan, Nantahala, and Pisgah) from common headquarters in Asheville, North Carolina. However, it does have a local ranger district office in Troy, North Carolina. There is one officially designated wilderness area within the forest—the 5,025-acre (20.34 km²) Birkhead Mountains Wilderness.
The forest derives its name from the Uwharrie Mountains, the ancient mountains atop which most of the forest sits. The western border of the forest is made by the Yadkin River and Great Pee Dee River while the northern border follows the northernmost range of the Uwharries near Asheboro. To the east, the forest is bordered by the Montgomery County seat of Troy.
The Forest lies within the Southeastern mixed forests ecoregion and supports mixed forests of pine and oak.Land was first purchased by the Federal government in 1931, and the area was known as the Uwharrie Reservation. The Uwharrie Forest was given federal designation in the early 1960s by President John F. Kennedy, along with the Nantahala, Pisgah, and Croatan National Forests.
The forest is bisected by several state and interstate highways. Both Interstate 73 and Interstate 74 run along the eastern boundary of the forest on the Moore County line from north to south. NC 73 runs from west to east from the Yadkin River to Mount Gilead. U.S. Highway 220 runs parallel to I-73/74. NC 109 runs from north to south from the Davidson County line to its end in Troy. NC 24/27 both run from the Yadkin River in the west to Moore County in the east.
The forest is one of the key locations used in the US Army Special Warfare School's ROBIN SAGE exercise for the training of Special Forces students.
The first substantial gold strike in the United States was discovered near this area in 1799, and gold was found in the Uwharrie Mountains in the 19th century. A mini gold rush occurred during the Great Depression. Panning for gold in the forest's streams and rivers remains a popular activity. Boating and fishing are available at Badin Lake, while the 20-mile (32.19 km) Uwharrie National Recreation Trail runs through the forest. Other trails and paths provide opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, camping, and horseback riding. Off-road vehicles have their own trail system, which is open seasonally.
Uwharrie National Forest has received attention as of late for unconfirmed sightings of Mountain Lions within forest boundaries.

Cumberland Falls' Moonbow | Kentucky Life | KET
The romance of the waterfall at Cumberland Falls State Park is enhanced on the occasional moonlit night by a moonbow. The spectacular sight of the moonbow attracts people from all over the world.
What exactly creates the moonbow? The light from the moon is shining through the water droplets in the mist at the bottom of the falls, creating the delicate arc of light. To the human eye it often looks like a faint white arc, but in long-exposure photographs, the seven colors of the rainbow are visible.
The naturalist John Muir wrote about the Yosemite National Park moonbows, which he called spray bows. Moonbows are also visible in Victoria Falls in Zambia.
Geography note: Cumberland Falls State Park is split between Whitley and McCreary counties. Everyone watching the moonbow is standing in Whitley County; the moonbow and the falls themselves are in McCreary County.
