Hiking to Monster Rock near Big Walker Lookout and Country Store in Wythe County, Virginia
MONSTER ROCK!!!! No, not 1980s hair metal...Monster Rock is an incredibly large (as the name implies) rock formation along the crest of Big Walker Mountain near the Big Bend area. To reach Monster Rock, take the Walker Mountain Trail. The trailhead is just behind the privately owned Big Walker Lookout and Country Store along Hwy 52 at the Bland-Wythe County line in southwest Virginia. Monster Rock starts just about a 1/4 mile down the trail, but the great overlook of the valley is found about 3/4 mile in from the trailhead. Great views of Garden Mountain, Round Mountain, and of course Walker Mountain as well. Great views can also be had from the state road and around the property of the country store.

Driving through Big Walker Mountain Tunnel in Virginia USA
The Big Walker Mountain Tunnel is a vehicular tunnel in the Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia that carries Interstate 77 through/under Big Walker Mountain. It is located at 37°2.316′N 81°7.818′W, a few miles south of the town of Bland and a segment of the Appalachian Trail, and about 20 miles (32 km) south of its longer cousin, the East River Mountain Tunnel.
Northbound at Big Walker Mountain Tunnel
The 4,229-foot (1,288 m) tunnel was first opened in 1972 after five years of construction labor. It carried a price tag of $50 million, which at the time was the most expensive single project undertaken on Virginia's interstate system. The opening of the tunnel reduced the travel time from Wytheville to Bland County by 30 minutes.
Preliminary engineering studies for the project were made by Brokenborough & Watkins, consulting engineers of Richmond, Virginia, and the final design of the roadway and tunnel was by Singstad & Kehart, consulting engineers of New York City.
The tunnel approaches and surrounding area can be viewed from the Big Walker Lookout, a 100-foot observation tower built on a nearby peak.

Into Virginia on Interstate 77, two tunnels, Wytheville
This drive takes you through the East River Mountain Tunnel, and then the Big Walker Mountain tunnel, and on into Wytheville, Virginia on Interstate 77 Southbound. I finished the drive with a trip to one of my favorite antique spots, Snoopers, on the I-77/81 strip between Wytheville and Max Meadows.

I made this trip in August-September 2017. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

VIRGINIA CITY: ABANDONED
Here is a Little History on Virginia City:
Back in the 1960's, A man by the name of Stuart Kime built an excursion train ride up in the mountains in Wythvile, Virginia. The attraction did well until 1972, when the train derailed and killed Stuart Kime. But Ron Kime wanted to keep the attraction going, in fact, he made the attraction even better! With the help of a friend, he built a replica old western town with a new train traveling around it. The new attraction opened under the name Dry Gulch Junction The new attraction opened during the summers beginning in 1977. The attraction featured shows in an indoor theater, a nice general store, gem mining, and of course, guests could ride the train! But, bad luck struck again when a worker slipped under the train and was killed one summer. But that still wasn't the end. Ron Kime and his wife decided they could still make some money by holding country concerts on the outdoor stage. People such as Dottie West, Helen Cornelius, Jim Ed Brown, and more played at Dry Gulch Junction. But, one summer, it rained nearly every show. But paying lots of money for big name performers and having low attendance numbers was paying the bills anymore. The couple could not afford to pay to keep Dry Gulch Junction operating. The train was dismantled, but the town remained. The place became deserted. But that still wasn't the end. A women from Greensboro, NC, named Jeanne Davis, and her husband, Michael Hill, bought the attraction for a price we couldn't refuse. They picked up where Ron Kime left off, and with some fresh paint and new furnishing, the attraction reopened as Virginia City. But nothing ever seemed easy, It was basically a struggle to keep going. said Davis. Over the years, Hill grew sick. He refused to see a doctor until 2006 when he finally did, but it was too late. He died in 2006, aged 55. And then the following year, Davis's father died. These two deaths killed Davis's desire to keep Virginia City open. After the 2008 season, Virginia City never reopened, and it sits Abandoned as of late 2016. And now, It feels like a ghost town.
R.I.P Virginia City, You will be missed by many.
Hiking to High Rocks at Big Survey Wildlife Management Area near Wytheville, Virginia
The Big Survey Wildlife Management Area is located right in the middle of Wythe County, just south of the town of Wytheville, in southwestern Virginia. Several mountains make up this WMA. The High Rocks are a massive quartzite rock outcropping along the ridge of Sand Mountain. There is an unblazed trail to High Rocks leading from the eastern parking lot off State Highway 640. The trail is just a little over 1 mile (one way) with just over 500 feet in elevation gain to reach the rocks. High Rocks offers some spectacular views of Wytheville and the surrounding area. Thanks for watching!
