The Big Winch, Coober Pedy
Coober Pedy is a town in northern South Australia, 846 km north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway. According to the 2011 census, its population was 1,695 (source: Wikipedia). The Big Winch in Coober Pedy, South Australia is 8 metres high and sits atop a hill that overlooks the town. It was constructed in 1970s by Klaus Wirries to commemorate Coober Pedy’s opal industry, but the original was destroyed in 1986. A new Big Winch was rebuilt shortly afterwards. Music by RS Murthi

Coober Pedy is a town in northern South Australia, 846 kilometres north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway.
The town is sometimes referred to as the opal capital of the world because of the quantity of precious opals that are mined there. Coober Pedy is renowned for its below-ground residences, called dugouts, which are built in this fashion due to the scorching daytime heat. The name Coober Pedy comes from the local Aboriginal term kupa-piti, which means white man's hole.
Opal was found in Coober Pedy on 1 February 1915; since then the town has been supplying most of the world's gem-quality opal. Coober Pedy today relies as much on tourism as the opal mining industry to provide the community with employment and sustainability. Coober Pedy has over seventy opal fields and is the largest opal mining area in the world.

Australia's Outback: Coober Pedy to Alice Springs bus tour September 2011
The second stage of the bus tour Ellen and Doug took into the outback of central Australia, exploring Coober Pedy, the opal capital of the world and home of underground cave hotels, the The Big Winch, Josephine's kangaroo orphanage and Boothill Cemetery, before continuing on to Alice Springs. Along the way they stopped at the Dog Fence (built to keep Dingos from migrating into sheep grazing country in southeastern Australia) and the Breakaways reserve in South Australia, before crossing over into the Northern Territory. In NT they visited Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and Kings Canyon, camped out in Australian Swags, and passed by wild camels, immense salt lakes and Mt Connor (also called Fooluru for its resemblance to Uluru), before ending their adventure in the town of Alice Springs. There Is An Entire Town In Australia That Lives Beneath The Surface Of The Earth
There Is An Entire Town In Australia That Lives Beneath The Surface Of The Earth
Have you ever met someone from a small town? It’s not uncommon for such people to say things like “if you blink you might miss it” as a way to indicate just how small their hometowns are. However, there is a town in the outback of Australia where you can keep your eyes wide open and still miss it despite the 1,695 residents that live there full-time. The town is Coober Pedy and the reason you might miss it is because it is entirely underground! The town would be your typical mining town except that instead of living on the surface the residents have gone bellow ground in order to escape the excessive heat which can reach 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Their homes are called “dugouts” and they cost about the same as building a regular house above ground, only you have the possibility of finding Opals in the “opal capital of the world” as you dig out your house. Many of the residents have found opals that not only covered the cost of building their homes but sometimes exceeded the cost by millions of dollars! This town is simply amazing in its strangeness.

Dolly's Road Trip through South Australia
There's no gnome on this trip to photobomb the scenery, instead it's Dolly! Her journey takes her from Sydney New South Wales to Adelaide South Australia, down to Kangaroo Island, over to Coober Pedy and then to the Dubbo Western Plains Zoo before returning home to Sydney.
The Exact Centre of Australia - Lambert Center to Coober Pedy - Ep.27 - FREE CAMPING
After finally crossing into our 3rd state for the trip, we had decided to do part of the Oodnadatta track ????. We let our tyres down at Marla to start the track. The road was surprisingly in good condition out to the Oodnadatta township (we were expecting a lot worse). We stopped in at the famous Oodnadatta Pink ???? Roadhouse for a famous ‘Oodna burger’ ???? and some photos.
Once our bellies were full of burgers and some beers ????, we continued on as we had a free camp spot on the map we wanted to stop at, a further 70km on. Enroute we popped in to the Mt Dutton Ruins for a look. That was pretty cool, seeing the old structure and all the old coloured glass on the ground. Mid-afternoon we made it to Algebuckina Waterhole & Old Railway ????Bridge camp spot. We opted to set up camp on the edge of the waterhole, as there was no one there and we had the whole place to ourselves.
We got ourselves all set up, Kurt got the fishing rods ???? out and put up our feet with a beer in hand. No fish were caught, BUT, we threw one yabby net in for giggles and to our amazement we caught a dozen blue claw yabbies ???? and a few shrimp overnight! Unbelievable! Our plans were soon turned on its head, when later that morning Kurt discovered our centre bearing rubber was not in good shape ????. We had to make a decision on what to do, as we were unsure how long it would last. Kurt replaced it before our trip, so it was only 10months old, but since we had upgraded our rear leaf springs in Cairns, we suspect this might have caused the issue.
The decision was made to abandon the Oodnadatta track and head straight to Coober Pedy to get it fixed ????. We made it to Coober Pedy fine, which was a relief. Kurt got the part ordered and all fixed within a few days, which was great. We decided to make the most of our time in Coober Pedy while there and see all the sights. We splashed out and did a tour with Oasis Tourist Park. $45 each for 3 hours, which included an underground mine tour ????????♀️????????and chauffeured around to see all the sights. Since it was out of the busy period, everywhere was quiet – which turned out great! We were the only ones on our tour so we got the VIP treatment.
