Zelkova serrata Sawleaf Zelkova, Japanese Zelkova is a large, deciduous canopy tree from Eastern Asia. It usually reaches 40'-50' tall and wide. The Giant Zelkova Tree of Shinmeiguu Shrine 神明宮, Kanazawa, Japan
We found the shrine and the giant tree by chance (we were actually searching for the ninja jinja - The ninja shrine) but it was really a nice discovery. The tree is more than 900 years old and it is a Zelkova tree (欅 (ケヤキ - keyaki in Japanese or Zelkova serrata in Latin). It is native to Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan. It is also interesting that Zelkova tree is very popular bonsai tree!
We visited the shrine soon after new year so we still could feel the festive atmosphere in the air. The temple is dedicated to Amaterasu (天照) or Amaterasu-ōmikami (天照大神／天照大御神) - the Japanese Sun Goddess.

The short movie (8 minutes) was realized using film material collected during the expedition to Tawian in 2013 of the Zelkova-team of the University of Fribourg (Switzerland). The main aim of the field work was to find natural populations of Zelkova serrata and its enigmatic subspecies Z. serrata subsp. tarokoensis (shown in the movie: 2:20-2:40). The movie shows also fascinating landscapes of this pacific island, as well as many other interesting plants and animals.

Matsumae's temple district is located adjacent to the castle grounds, just northwest of the keep. The district is filled with a various temples of different Buddhist sects. Many of the temples were constructed before the construction of Matsumae Castle, and as such comprise some of the oldest and most culturally valuable structures in Hokkaido. Other notable spots in the temple district include the graveyard of the local Matsumae lords and the 300 year old Kechimyaku Sakura (血脈桜,bloodline cherry)with a legend. From the cherry tree many of the park's ones have descended.

NHK General TV (NHK総合テレビジョン NHK Sōgō terebijon?) is the main television service of NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation). It shows news, drama, quiz/variety shows, music, sports, anime and specials which directly compete with its commercial counterparts. It is well known for its nightly newscasts, regular documentary specials and popular historical dramas. Among the programs NHK General TV broadcasts are the annual New Year's Eve spectacular Kōhaku Uta Gassen, the year-long Taiga drama, and the daytime Asadora.
