The community-run Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary is located in the Kibale Forest area and is the home to several monkey species, including the red colobus, the grey-cheeked mangabey and the red-tailed monkey. Here you can see these species eating, moving through the trees and grooming each other as well as Great blue turaco.
Chimpanzees of Kibale and Budongo Forest and Birding in Bigodi Wetlands, Uganda 2019 (4K -Video)
Trekking to our nearest family tree neighbor, the chimpanzee. The Kibale forest national park is home to a big population of chimpanzees and we had the chance to visit a large group with baby and semi-adults. Observing these amazing great apes gives an idea of how close we are related to one another. The articulation, precision and movement of their hand is identical to ours. Also chimpanzees are highly social animals that spend a lot of time grooming each other to keep them free from ticks and other parasites.
Our second chimpanzee trekking took place in the Budongo Forest Reserve in Murchison Falls National Park. Here the chimpanzees rested on the ground and we could observe their social behavior in great details.
In between the chimpanzee trekking we went for birding excursions. The first started from Ndali Lodge all around the crater lake Nyinambuga where we were lucky to see the great blue turaco, Klaa’s cuckoo and black-and-white-casqued hornbill.
The second birding was in the Bigodi wetlands. Besides many species of birds we also saw red colobus, black-and-white colobus and red-tailed monkeys.
Welcome to our chimpanzee trekking and birding to Kibale Forest National Park, Budongo Forest Reserve and Bigodi Wetlands in Uganda in August 2019. We stayed two nights at the beautiful Ndali Lodge near Kibale and one night at the Budongo Eco Lodge.
For animal identification, please refer to the video subtitle or to the species list below.
With best regards,
Sandra and Markus

Mabamba Wetlands, Uganda - The Search for Shoebills - Day 2
16 November, 2016 - We were on our second trip to the Mabamba Wetlands on the edges of Lake Victoria, Uganda. Our first trip the previous day was very successful – many bird species sighted and our primary objective, the Shoebill, located, observed and filmed. But one of our team had been prevented by illness from joining us that day. So the team went back the next day to seek again. It took a while but our guides really know what they are doing. As we were continuing on our tour that day, we did not have as much time to search and it was looking like we might not find a Shoebill. As Marilyn said, “it’s not Disneyland….”, there are no guarantees. But with guides like Herbert Byaruhanga, Director of Bird Uganda Safaris, and Ismael Katumba, Field Guide for the Mabamba Landing Site, the odds were in our favor and again we were successful!

Wetland along Kenya Uganda border threatening expected benefits
A wetland along the Kenya Uganda border is threatening to derail the expected benefits of the recently launched one stop border. The wetland in Mayenje, Busia County Kenya and Buyengo in Busia District of Uganda lacks clear demarcations with each community claiming ownership.

#PMLIVE: CRACKDOWN ON WETLAND ENCROACHERS - NEMA
The National Environment Management Authority, NEMA together with Southern Regional environment protection police have arrested two people for farming in Wetlands.
The crackdown on wetland encroachers done in Bukomansimbi left the residents with no food as acres of plantations cultivated in the wetlands destroyed.
Local authorities say that an eviction notice was served to the farmers but fell on deaf ears. Here is more in video.
Kibale National Park, Uganda | Crater Safari Lodge
Kibale National Park in Southern Uganda is the premier destination for Chimpanzee Tracking in Uganda, but the area surrounding the park offers so much more!
Kibale is located near a beautiful Crater Lake region with many of the lakes and incredible viewpoints accessible by car or via a short hike. We stayed at the Crater Safari Lodge and were spoilt with amazing views of the lake from our window.
While in the region, we also visited an eco-tourism project at the Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary, located just outside of the Kibale National Park. This little-known community set around a small wetland is home to 8 different species of monkeys and tons of beautiful birds and insects. The project offers guided walks around the walks to tourists and all profits from the walks go back into the community and towards conservation efforts in the wetland.
